AIBU to question no hosepipe ban exemption for people on benefits?

It’s also highly likely that these posters used the search options on their phone/computer and did see all the numerous exemptions, many involving benefits.

As someone else mentioned, many benefits are a gateway to a two tier system.

It erodes the trust in the social contract.

As I mentioned upthread I am
extremely careful with my water use, and while I do think that the water industry is not fit for anything I realise water is a precious resource we take for granted.

And once again it’s up to me to make the effort when so many are exempt and don’t have to worry about their use of water.

I don't know where you are. But I am on south coast and am definitely exempt due to disability but not on any benefits

Because if you've got to carry a full watering can from the tap to what you're watering, you're likely to get pretty fed up after three or four trips, so only do the minimum to keep your most previous plants alive.

If you use a house you'll water everywhere fairly generously as it takes little effort. So you'll use a lot more water.

If your kids have a paddling pool that you have to fill with a watering can, you're going to just fill it to a couple of inches at most, for splashing in. If you have a hosepipe you'll fill it deeper, because you can. So more water.

Many disabled people will not be able to carry a heavy watering can, so they're exempt.

I am not on any benefits as I am lucky enough to be able to work from home, but my medical condition gives me an exemption from the hosepipe ban.

If i lived alone I guess I might need to use it to water my plants (although in reality I am too ill to garden). But I can ask DH /DS to do any physical jobs do I would see it as morally wrong to abuse my exemption

There’s another thread on here where people are saying they’d report their neighbours!!

If you get caught it can end up with a fine of £1,000 under the Water Industry Act 1991. It’s a last resort though.

I wonder if we the people can fine the companies for pumping raw sewage into our rivers and seas?🤔

Does anyone ever actually get caught breeching hosepipe bans and if so, how? The water companies don’t exactly send spy vans around and unless we’re living in 1984, your neighbours won’t be filming you and grassing on you surely.

Only a few water companies have a hose pipe ban ATM anyway. Anglian and those in South and South West have the ban. Mine is just an appeal to conserve water when you can.

I presume this post is meant to be ironic. People don't like two tier systems and they are almost always abused. Why should someone with children under 5 be allowed to use a hosepipe just because they're on benefits whilst someone with children of the same age that isn't on benefits can't? My MIL and BIL are on the Priority Services Register and yet have no greater need to use a hosepipe than we do as a family. The register isn't intended to capture those with a greater dependency on a hose pipe so it's a blunt and inaccurate tool that will introduce inherent unfairness.

No, I meant that doing more washing etc is nothing to do with watering your garden.

If she has a blue badge, that’s pretty much all she needs for an exemption to the ban. Blue badges are acceptable proof of a mobility problem that would make it difficult to carry watering cans or buckets, so a hosepipe would be acceptable.

Unfortunately you fell for a headline not the full story:

Who is actually exempt:
Those with children under 5
Those with disabilities / medical and safety needs
(indluding those on WaterSure tarrifs) Bluebadge holders
Those with communication or mobility issues

They are also on the priority service register

NOT ALL BENEFIT CLAIMANTS ARE EXEMPT. But all of these exceptions to the hosepipe ban do have some form of benefit they are eligible to claim from whether in work or not as they are means tested benefits (or child benefit ... which yes you still get while in full time work)

My understanding is that the hosepipe ban is in place, at least in part, to ensure that people are responsible with their water usage, so that those with these conditions, who clearly need a reliable water supply, actually have one.

Not disagreeing, but caveating. The Watersure scheme is means tested, so there will be people who have all of those conditions and more, who won’t get help because they don’t get means tested benefits.

It’s everything to do with the actual issue though
