Hosepipe or watering can I’d use the same amount of water as I would only water the plants/trees that need it, ie young ones, or not drought tolerant. So a watering can would just make it a million times slower for me, while using the same amount of water. Hosepipe bans are more for those who turn on the hose and let their garden soak for ages. If that’s the case then yes it’s selfish to use such vast amounts of water.

But a hosepipe can also be used sparingly and sensibly as well as economically, it’s not a magic water overconsumption machine.

My point is that if enough people disobey them, they’ll have to do something. At the moment when people follow along like sheep it means they don’t have to solve the actual problem

I find the replies on tjis thread unbelievable. They result of not paying for usage at the point of use has developed a selfish entitled attitude in a significant minority. Clean safe inexpensive water is a precious resource that the millions of humans don't have. Yet people are prepared to fill paddling pools and water lawns when the supply companies are saying there is extreme pressure on the system. Those confidently saying we won't run out of water are wrong. We can run out of water. We nearly did before and we are in unprecedented climate change that impacts on water supplies.
The sooner all water use is metered the better. The reason we don't is on public health grounds so water isn't rationed to lower income households, water being a basic public health requirement. But we have disconnected so far from recognising common good to blaming our poor actions on other's poor action (water companies) that we are going to need to meter supplies.

I asked the OP if their sole focus is the hosepipe when it comes to sensible water usage, or whether they are in general as cautious with this precious resource as I am, giving examples of how I do that. The OP ignored the question and was sarcastic, making a silly comment about my post using long words. Turns out they’re hosing down stables and henhouses, but then sanctimoniously (long word alert) use a watering can in the garden.

Livestock is correctly exempt but the point is the adherence or not to a hosepipe ban means precisely nothing about someone’s water consumption or, in fact, their emotional maturity (!)

People could let their gardens dry to a crisp, but have long soaks in the bathtub every single night. They could be mindlessly washing their dishes leaving the tap on for ages. They could be running their washing machines twice daily just with a pair of socks in it.

The sanctimony of not using a hosepipe means precisely nothing about how conscious one is when it comes to water consumption as there’s a million other ways to waste endless litres of water in the privacy of your home.

The OP was deliberately playing stupid when it came to this argument and continued focusing solely on the hosepipe thing, because they knew that they consume loads more water than the average person and they randomly admitted it halfway through their thread

She isn't using more water than anyone else at home and is obeying the hosepipe ban because she knows how limited water is. So I really don't understand why you have an issue with her using the water she needs to look after her animals, as she is permitted to do.

I have not seen any poster begrudging the use of water for animal welfare. The OP introduced the ‘fact’ that they had animals late in the thread, rather conveniently.

What many of us don’t like is the lecturing coupled with the hypocrisy. You may want to consider that yourself, before adopting such an air of superiority.

If the op wanted to convince people her lecturing tone while using more water than others for stables etc isn’t doing that.

Hosing hundreds of litres onto the garden in these situations is wasting it. Use watering cans instead

What has whether you have a ban or not got anything to with the fact that petulantly posting that all the posts about water shortages and our responsibility to not waste a finite resource has only convinced you not to comply with requests to protect that resource make you sound like a whiny child? And a selfish one at that?
