AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

You are missing the point. It is forbidden.

It is also being cracked down upon because there is an awareness of cheeky chancers who do this among their own booking/party.

It is theft, plain and simple.

Attitudes like yours really piss me off. Not only going AI in a foreign country, reliant on tourism, but then exploiting the fact that the overworked staff cannot possibly keep track of what drink/food item is going where.

But in my experience, it is a certain type that does this. I would take pleasure in slinging them out.

OMG forbidden! I’m sure you’ve done something “forbidden” in your time?
I can assure you that I’m not whatever certain type you’re alluding to but I can tell you’re not so nice yourself. Is it my fault that the hotel make loads of money and overwork their staff? No. Am I making it worse for them? No. You’re angry at the wrong person.

If you justify stealing on the basis that the people you are stealing from are multi millionaire chains you can pretty much justify stealing from the vast majority of high street shops, supermarkets, car dealers, on line businesses, restaurants etc.

I do yes !

But this attitude of "just get their kids some drinks on your AI" is how entitled CF's thrive in society. If other people enable them, then they will do it all the more. Absolutely not OP, stand firm!

Lol. It's a holiday. Chill. I'm sure the hotel is not blubbing into its slushie maker wailing whhhhhy did she give her slushie to the child with no wristband. It's not faaaair! (But, back to orignal OP obvs BIL is ridiculous also with his 'no fairs'. All sounds unecessarily stressful. Is it v hot there? You are all literally sweating the small stuff).

I said what my mother taught me - let me think about it.

It is a genius phrase, I use it on the kids all the time when I don't know quite how I want to answer. It infuriated me when I was a kid but I see the benefit now, and I always do think about it and answer. I will answer my bil tomorrow.

It is indeed, OP. Wise mum Smile.
Perhaps you can explain to the adults and their kids that your kids have paid for the drinks and snacks in advance of the holiday. So they are not getting "free" stuff at all. And they will continue to access the drinks and snacks that they have paid for.

Why should they risk getting chucked out/thieve from the hotel for the sake of someone else who didn't want to pay up for the AI ?

How do you explain to your kids that it is OK to steal stuff in this context but not in others ?

It actually surprises me the hotel does an AI and a non AI option because my guess is a lot of people would try to get away with doing this.

They had the same set-up when I was on a Saga holiday to Montenegro a couple of years ago.

There was actually a separate 'Saga lounge' for teas, coffees and biscuits, but also a couple of bars where you either showed your band or paid. (There were also some imported drinks not included in AI - not that unusual, I believe.)

In the restaurant, the staff had a list of rooms that were AI and those that were half-board or b and b.

MargotGobby · 13/07/2026 09:59

That’s absolutely controlling and nuts. Add what you said here ‘it was only £20 extra per day and I figured we’d easily spend that on drinks and food anyway.’ Why should you be punished for them not doing their maths?

Think it’s just you and me finding it funny 🤦‍♀️

I am trying to think what it would have autocorrected from?

It's not stealing though? OP has said she is mainly drinking water. So her slushie allocation is going unused. So on some occasions she could give a slushie to a kid. It's not a big deal.

Nice try. Epic fail.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

MajorProcrastination · 13/07/2026 09:53

This sounds like a skill issue on his part. BIL fucked up and found out.

Why did no one mention this on a group chat? Like "we're booking the all inclusive, just checking everyone else is."

Don't feel guilty. Enjoy your hols.

Namechangingregularly · 13/07/2026 09:52

I think they are reasonable. All should be fair on holiday. If your room has a nicer view I would close the curtains too.

GasPanic · 13/07/2026 09:50

Chaarlene · 13/07/2026 09:32

My favourite non-commital phrase is 'thanks, I'll bear that in mind'. Meaning - Even though I am not doing what you want, I did hear what you asked.

I don't know how it works at AI (do you have different coloured wristbands or something? But - could you have a small compromise in the snack/drink stakes? Eg: get the slushies (you don't want) and let the non-AI kids have it? Because, actually, those drinks have been allocated for you whether you want it or not. If you leave them by your sunbeds or whateves, no one is going to police which kid is slurping which slushie.

Why should they risk getting chucked out/thieve from the hotel for the sake of someone else who didn't want to pay up for the AI ?

I mean yes that’s the ideal scenario but Plan B would be for her children to just give them the odd slushy. It wouldn’t kill them.

It wouldn't kill their parents to actually pay for AI either.

I would not be encouraging my children to take things for others. The adults need to pay for it just like OP has.

GasPanic · 13/07/2026 09:45

Maybe you should point out to them that you have already paid £20 pp per day for the AI.

How much are they shelling out on slushies ?

Maybe they should go to the supermarket and buy a load of cheap cans or something.

Maybe you could ask your BIL to refund the cost of your kids AI if he wants them to stop using it.

Doteycat · 13/07/2026 09:44

Housebashing · 13/07/2026 09:12

I know right? Even on 100% profit they’d be making a fortune if they charge a pound for the frozen water but no they decide to steal from hard-working families held captive on site for holidays.

Tell them as you’ve paid for it they will be using it! I can’t believe they’d expect you not to. They booked on the cheap, they can deal with the moving kids!

Absolutely this. Obviously.

firstofallimadelight · 13/07/2026 09:36

I’d just say “I’ve thought about it and no I’m not going to spoil my kids holiday, we paid ai for this reason”

PropertyD · 13/07/2026 09:35

I agree. Dont steal food for your BIL and his kids who havent paid for AI. They had a choice. Of course his children 'miss' out. They havent paid for AI

AnonyMumAuDHD · 13/07/2026 09:35

Just realised I misread your post and the maths - assumed it was £600 per person so x4 was around the same as the €2200 upgrade per family. That is actually seriously steep, and I can fully understand the horror of the BiL at realising he stuffed up, but from experience I know it is very easy to spend that much on drinks, especially alcoholic ones, meals for 4 twice a day.

I think he needs to accept he cocked up and either pay the upgrade so at least he knows how much he will be spending or just accept that whatever budget he set for the week is slightly blown. And also learn from it that AI locations are cheaper booked in advance (tbf though, usually you can upgrade upon arrival for the same amount, so I am stunned by the uplift in price - perhaps he should query that with his travel agent).

Under no circumstances should your own kids NOT be be making the most of the AI facilities, though.

😂 I can't even remember what that was meant to be! Fucks definitely drinks, no idea about faints!

Love that your autocorrect changed drinks to fucks 🤣🤣🤣
