People trying to carry on the drama after a heatwave

I know this is probably a stupid thing to get annoyed about but aibu to think it’s ridiculous when people keep trying to carry on after the heatwave is over.

Over the past few weeks we’ve had two mega heatwaves here, well over 30 degrees. I really struggle with the heat myself. I can happily sleep with the bedroom window open all year round and never have more than a 9 tog duvet on as I run hot.

But even when temperatures have dropped to a perfectly reasonable Summer temperature.(it’s 19 degrees here), some of my friends are still complaining how hot it is and that they can’t cope.

Dh is refusing to put the 4 tog duvet back on the bed as we will be too hot apparently and has not only the windows but the front door wide is open.

People are asking if the schools will be back open.

It’s forecast to be 25 degrees tomorrow even during the hottest part of the day.

My friend got annoyed with me when I said it had cooled down, she said it hasn’t. Surely there’s an enormous difference between 34 degrees and 25 degrees?

Aibu to think some people are just trying to carry on the drama?

I'm not sure why heat deaths in sick, elderly or young children are irrelevant. They are all people too.

Obviously if you have such people in your household you take additional sensible precautions and measures to protect them. But for the general population (the vast majority of people moaning) it really isn’t an issue.

Again, do you think a large proportion of children die each summer in most European countries where this is standard summer weather? Or do they miraculously survive with their parents just being sensible regarding ventilating homes and keeping them hydrated? That’s without even looking at countries that have the hottest climates.

The exaggeration about the difficulty of “coping” with a couple of weeks of warm summer weather is quite ridiculous.

Shodan · 12/07/2026 22:36

I have been a bit of an over-dramatic weather moaner recently but in the bit of the SE I'm in the weather has definitely been more bearable over the last couple of days. Yesterday, for example, I felt able to go out for a longish stroll with my son, whereas at points last week even stepping into the garden made me come over all unnecessary.

There has been a lovely breeze over the last 24 hours as well, so with windows flung open wide once the sun has gone down enough the house has cooled down enough to warrant only one fan on per room!

However I am quite militant about keeping curtains and windows closed during the hottest times, and I do seem to spend a ridiculous amount of time opening/closing both each day.

We haven't had a summer with weeks of 30+ temperatures for 50 years, so of course people aren't used to it.

They may not be used to it but pretending that a few weeks of summer weather for once means we’re all going to melt or die is very silly when the vast majority of countries have similar weather for a good chunk of most years. It’s really not half the issue that people have made it out to be. And half of the people moaning pay to go on holiday to countries that have exactly this type of weather most summers. 😆

Miss America.
i lived in Louisiana - no one walked anywhere.
And when they did walk, it was power walking round the shopping malls, where there was air conditioning.
There were no pavements on the main roads, because people went everywhere by car.

What a minute - by "pavement" do you mean sidewalks? Was this is an actual city?

Yes, in general, America isn't a very walky country. I've mostly lived in NYC, though, which is very walky - the lowest per capita car ownership in the country.

This overlooks the huge campaigns about excess deaths in those super heated places ..across the world

The UK is not anywhere close to those places in temperature. It’s not remotely comparable. Human beings cooling mechanisms are overwhelmed at an internal temperature of 40°C. In 50% humidity it would take an adult 4-6 hours of being exposed to a 46°C air temperature constantly for their internal core temperature to reach 40°C and become dangerous when relatively inactive or carrying out normal daily activities. In 38°C air temperature an adult could do 2-3 hours of more active physical activities before this happens. Obviously it they were trying to run a marathon it would happen far faster, in under 60 minutes, without regular breaks to cool and rest/ rehydration, but nobody sane would do that.

Sitting in a house/ flat with an air temperature in the mid-30s isn’t going to kill anybody unless there is extreme humidity approaching 100% or they are very elderly, very sick already or a very small child, and with proper ventilation opening and closing windows at the appropriate times of day/ shielding windows from direct sunlight etc at the appropriate times of day it will be nowhere will be as hot inside as it is outside so even if the outside temp is 35°C in the hottest part of the day that isn’t the case all day and night and it is possible to keep inside significantly cooler with just some common sense.

As I said, a lot of the world would be totally uninhabitable if everyone died as soon as there are daytime air temperatures of 35°C. And OP has said that where she is now they are mid to high 20s! People making a fuss about that as if it is some kind of extreme are being silly.

Houses take ages to cool down though. Have to let all the heat out but it takes a few days

Aiming4Optimistic · 12/07/2026 22:17

Well, my phone says it's 22 but my house is still uncomfortably hot. I have an attic bedroom and even with the windows open tonight, it still feels stuffy and hot - there's no breeze passing through the house.
It's obviously not as hot and sticky at 30+ but it's still not nice. We need rain to freshen everything up.

I think you're right that people often tend to be melodramatic. After all, most people like being an object of interest, and will, similarly, also often describe their unwellness far beyond what anyone would want to hear.

Here's a comparison. I've spent a lot of time in temperature of 40 and above. Although there may be air conditioning, I still may be walking a mile to get somewhere. And a while back, when the air conditioning broke down, I was stuck, overnight, night after night, with temperatures that were probably right around there. (I don't know exactly, because the thermostat wasn't working.)

My car said 32 when I went to work at lunchtime 🤷‍♀️

You do realise Cumbria is quite a large country with lots of variation, don’t you? Why would I lie about it? 😂

🙄🙄🙄

As we suspected.

Cumbria isn’t a country, by the way.

raquarita · 12/07/2026 22:12

Summerbreezeplease · 12/07/2026 22:06

That made me laugh. I don’t live in Cumbria I’m in the Midlands and it’s cooled down significantly.

But this is the exact sort of behaviour I’m talking about.

I get that some people might struggling even in 18-20, but it’s the complete denial that the temperature has changed that’s so weird.

It’s ridiculous isn’t it. It annoys me so much when people just lie about the temperature like that. She probably parked the car in direct sunlight and so that’s what it said on the car thermometer or something 🙄

Honestly some people will just say anything to try and get attention, and you’ll probably be noticing it because we’ve just had such warm weather so they’ve made that their whole personality. They’ll have also done the same during Covid, and been the first people to get it!

Mischance · 12/07/2026 22:11

it’s 19 degrees here - I wish it was here!!

It hasn't cooled down significantly though. You're talking as if it's dropped from 35C to 20C. It's been nearly 30C here today. It's still hot.

Why are you so bothered what other people say and think anyway? Let people moan if they want to! And it is not 'after the heatwave' for some. Some people are still in it!!!

Your car is hot because it's a metal box.

MoltenLasagne · 12/07/2026 22:06

Not to brag but it's 21 degrees here nowband I've got the (summer) duvet back on. Only going to be 25 tomorrow and I'm relishing being able to wear proper non-holiday clothes again 😂

Met office is saying it might get down to 26c next Saturday where I am and I can't wait 😫Another week of 30 is pushing me over the edge.

thejelliclecats · 12/07/2026 22:09

raquarita · 12/07/2026 22:02

It most certainly has not been 32 degrees in Cumbria today.

What’s your reasoning for making this up?

Zov · 12/07/2026 22:09

@EssCarGo Depends where you are. It HAS been very hot where I am, and in some other places. Of course you would be wearing jeans and a jumper in Scotland. It was much cooler there. It was 35C in the midlands. (And parts of the south, and parts of Wales.) I seriously doubt you would have been wearing the same outfit if lived where some of us live.

It's almost like some people are a bit envious of others experiencing these extreme high temperatures! Weird. Confused

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 22:04

Maybe it’s the constant media hysteria and people have forgotten that weather is not that dramatic.

A few weeks ago the DM headline was ENTER THE HEAT DOME and I was in Scotland wearing jeans and a jumper 🤣

Pretty sure loads of us were meant to drop dead, don’t think much really happened there. Lots of clicks on news headlines though.

lovecotswoldsliving · 12/07/2026 22:03

It’s sizzling here in the Cotswolds.

ThatMintMember · 12/07/2026 22:02

I'm still moaning about the heat and it's low 20's here this weekend. Live in a new build that ends up hotter inside than outside, work from home, every place I've been this week has been unbearably hot (school, nursery, museum etc), everywhere that has aircon doesn't put it on (public transport, play cafe, shopping centre), we've also had swarms of thrips in the area this week meaning we couldn't open the windows for 2 days or they all come inside!

I'm just feeling irritated that nowhere seems to be have any suitable plan to handle the heat and we're just expected to be dripping with sweat all summer! It's not the same as being abroad as they have aircon so it's easy to find somewhere to cool down.
