AIBU to not like watching a domestic abuser in the Wimbledon final? I have not heard one comment from the BBC about Zverev’s domestic abuse.

OP posts:

And smashing a racquet on the ground is totally different to smashing the chair where someone was sitting!!

MrsKeats · 13/07/2026 15:56

That was a 15 year old girl!
Are you working with young people or not?
Know anything about safeguarding?

Show me how many players have smashed the umpire's chair.
Of course it's evidence of a violent nature.
This is why women don't report abuse.
Unbelievable.

A player has literally been disqualified from Wimbledon this year for smashing her racket so hard it flew i to the public gallery.

Pretty much all top players in history have smashed rackets and had meltdowns at tournaments.

The cases against him were discontinued. The mother of his child is on good terms with him and they co-parent together. He sees his daughter regularly and she appears with him in tournaments a lot. Spreading misinformation about someone based on rumours and snippets in the yellow press is horrible.

As for "white privelege", Zverev may come from a middle-class background, but he was anything but privileged battling diabetes since the age of 4 and having been told he could never compete on a high level because of the dangers to his health and it being impossible to manage. He proved everyone wrong against all odds and works incredibly hard with a very very tough father as coach who certainly didn't mollycoddle him.

YANBU. He’s a domestic abuser who strangled the mother of his child. And another girlfriend.
I’m not sure what he has to do to have people actually realise what a vile bastard he is - presumably actually kill a woman?
it won’t be a man will it? He prefer to pick on the weaker and vulnerable, all 6 foot 6 of him.

Thank you. Feel like I am going insane.

Oh so you were lying about working at a university on another thread then?
Figures.

I am a solicitor and I lectured law at a university for 2 years but went back to private practice. I have only ever taught on post-graduate courses so all young people I worked with were adults.

WimbyAce · 13/07/2026 15:43

Do you really think he would have joint custody of his daughter if there were any concerns about violence?!
Also racket abuse is extremely common in tennis. You only need to look at the fines just for Wimbledon for example. You can not use this as evidence for how a person acts off the tennis court.

MrsKeats · 13/07/2026 15:41

XelaM · 13/07/2026 15:38

I don't work with young people. Not sure where that came from. I just have a teenage daughter. So I guess your concerns are unfounded 😂

None of that alters the way that he’s behaved.
The fact that you think someone who is charming on a surface level can’t be an abuser is concerning.
He has white privilege. That’s apparent.
You seriously think two separate women made it all up?? It’s quite worrying that you work with young people.

Yes because there’s definitely no imbalance of power there is there?!

Are you aware that the two of them happily co-parent their young daughter? That said daughter sometimes accompanies her dad to tennis tournaments? Or is that because of an imbalance of power too?

XelaM · 13/07/2026 14:38

Errr... What does Zverev being white have to do with anything? Sinner is also white and currently my favourite footballers are Mbappe and Bellingham 🤷‍♀️

I've always liked Zverev as I'm Russian-German like him; we saw him play live several times and he was lovely talking to my daughter about hoping to win Wimbledon (this was a few years ago at Wimbledon) and took selfies with her; he's defying all odds suffering from serious Type 1 diabetes; he's worked incredibly hard on his game to improve this year to finally win a Grand Slam having thrown it away in the final several times before; and yes he's very handsome and likeable in my opinion 😀

His ex agreed, and for half what the court initialled ordered.

I also find him handsome and personable. But I don’t excuse domestic violence and I won’t beleive a man over a woman as he’s handsome and personable.

because that’s really fucking shameful.

It’s insane that rich men can drop €200k like it’s pocket change and make their problems go away

Because that's not what happened.

"The criminal proceedings against tennis star Alexander Zverev for alleged domestic abuse were discontinued on June 7, 2024, without a guilty verdict or an official determination of innocence. The Tiergarten District Court in Berlin dropped the case after Zverev agreed to pay a €200,000 fine (€150,000 to the state treasury and €50,000 to non-profit organizations).
Zverev had originally appealed a €450,000 penalty order for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend Brenda Patea in May 2020. Because the process was halted by mutual consent between Zverev, the prosecution, and the complainant, no formal judgment was issued."

I agree and I don’t think he should be allowed to play for his country when these accusations have been made. Apparently he ‘settled out of court’ (so paid off his ex partner). How is that not an admission of guilt?

@MrsKeats Actually no I don't like Conner McGregor 🤮 Very different character to Zverev if you ever heard either speak. Zverev is my favourite tennis player and has been for a long time and there's a lot of misinformation about him on this thread, hence feeling the need to defend him.

This is very sweeping. I’m not sure if you struggle to see nuance.

sinners doping was incredibly miniscule, it would not have affected performance, and he’s passed every other urine test and is worlds number one. So clearly not relying on drugs.

as for zverev, my go to is always to beleive the woman. His ex could not breathe properly or swallow properly for days. You can decide that as he’s handsome you don’t beleive her.

it kinda disgusts me you think that way, but you have every right to.

I don't think you understand how doping works or what athletes use it for. On championship days when they are guaranteed to get tested of course it will be out of their system (or only accidental traces left) otherwise they would get disqualified.

The woman you feel sorry for is amicably co-parenting with him and did not pursue her case against him.

I have a soft spot for Zverev because he has a very serious health condition that affects him every day, yet he's the Tennis World no2 against all odds. I very much admire that.

Almost all tennis players display a temper on the court - that proves absolutely nothing.

And no, innocent celebrities often don't want to go through years of legal battles that could be career-ruining and extremely expensive and rather pay a fine/settlement to end the case there and then.

No they don’t.
Smashing an umpire’s chair is not common.
He also had an argument with an umpire about a feather on court fgs.
Why are you defending him?
I bet you like Connor McGregor as well 🤮
