Should I apologise to this mum?

I’ve recently had the scan to find out that I’m having a girl and to say I’m thrilled is an understatement as I desperately wanted a girl and honestly would have kept going until I got one.

I was talking to a Mum at my gym before the class started who I was sure also had a daughter. She asked me if I knew what I was having and I told her I was having a girl and in my excitement I did get a bit carried away in my enthusiasm about having a girl rather than a boy.

The mum didn’t say much in reply and then the class started so I didn’t think much of it until I was in the cafe after and saw her with her child who is definitely a boy.

I know feel super awkward about it as I think I might have come across a bit OTT about having a girl and I’m a bit worried it might have come across as a bit smug to a boy mum and like I was rubbing her face in it which definitely wasn’t my intention

I was lying in bed replaying the conversation and i just keep cringing. I’m wondering if I need to apologize to her tomorrow or would it make it worse ??

There is quite a bit social side to my gym with lots of activities for mums and little ones which I know this Mum is very involved in so I really don’t want to get off on the wrong foot.

Does anyone have any advice ?

What a stupid post, your honestly have handed your baby back???
I hate all of these threads saying how girls are harder work than boys, it’s rubbish and it’s normally said by someone who hasn’t patented a girl and seems to use this to prove how lucky they are to have sons.
I get gender disappointment is real but saying you’d hand a girl back is unbelievable.
And I say this as a boy and girl mum.

When I said I was having a boy, I was constantly told girls were awful by women.

It wound me up because it was half "consolation" that I didn't want or need, and half an insult to my sex (at all ages).

StasisMom · 12/07/2026 17:28

I’m lucky to have one of each and honestly, i do not get why you would prefer one over the other as they each bring their own delights and challenges. Most importantly, I hope your daughter is healthy and happy.

DinoLil · 12/07/2026 17:23

Give me a son any day over a daughter!

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 12/07/2026 17:22

I have a friend who wanted a girl, and she treats her boy like an afterthought because she wanted another girl. And in that group, all my friends had girls first and had a little smug chat about how they were so pleased they were guaranteed a girl, and I have an only boy.

Whilst many PP on this thread have said they'd just raise their brows and think you were an idiot, there's every possibility that you've been able absolute twat to a woman who's sick to death of those comments.

Me, I was pleased to learn that I had a boy just because I found everyone guessing insufferable (and everyone guessed girl, so I was pleased to shove it in their faces!). He's an amazing child, and it's nothing to do with his sex, it's because he's a lovely little fellow.

Windthebloodybobbinup · 12/07/2026 17:22

I think I would find it weird that you have made a load of assumptions and projections as to what your baby will be like just because they have a vagina! Babies and children are their own people, they won’t necessarily act the way you think, like the things you think they should, or behave in gender specific ways.

MrsVBS · 12/07/2026 17:22

You’re probably overthinking it, as a boy mum having a girl really didn’t appeal so if someone had said it to me I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid, I am and always will be glad I had a boy!!

Why do you think that all boy mums are disappointed and desperate to have girls? After being a mum for 22 yrs I think if I’d been handed a baby girl all those years ago, knowing what I know now, I’d have handed her straight back.

Having a girl is no walk in the park, I have two nieces and I’m one of three girls, they are so much more trouble than boys.

Like other posters have pointed out, she probably thought that you were as mad as a box of frogs.

Don't apologise, it will only make things worse. She probably thinks you're an arsehole. Note to yourself - think before you speak next time. As a mother of 5 sons, I get tired of being asked if I kept trying for a girl. The answer is no, I'm very happy with my sons and very close to them as adults.

Kaidaia · 12/07/2026 16:41

Also when did this become a thing, historically wasn’t it a boy everyone wanted.

It certainly used to be. Not a good look either tbh.

darkandgloomy · 12/07/2026 17:00

Not all females are close to their mums. I'm certainly not! My sons are closer to me than their dads. My dp is closer to his mum than his dsis. Don't fall for that stereotype!

Glitchymn1 · 12/07/2026 16:58

I doubt she cares, having a healthy child is a blessing.

mondaytosunday · 12/07/2026 16:56

Meh. I think on balance people (especially men - just look at their reactions on those gender reveal posts) want boys. However we were thrilled to be having a girl after three boys (not all mine), but didn’t go on about it. Unless you were making direct negative comments about boys then forget it.

Dumbledora8 · 12/07/2026 16:55

I think it's really weird that you are thinking about this. It actually makes me think that you are smug that you are having a girl over a boy, and that girls are better for some strange reason??

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 12/07/2026 16:55

You are very strange and I would give you a very wide berth.

SatsumaDog · 12/07/2026 16:52

I wouldn’t apologise; it would just make it worse if she did take offence. To be honest I wouldn’t have given it a second thought and have 2 boys. Never had any desire for a girl at all, but I appreciate it’s important to some people. I would just have thought you were someone who had a strong preference. It’s really not that unusual.

lordbaddingham · 12/07/2026 16:52

I have one of each and boys are way better, so she'll have the last (smug) laugh 😬😬😬😬😁

Well I mainly I was just saying that I feel I can just relax and enjoy pregnancy / motherhood now that I know for certain I’m
having a girl.

But I did also say about how much closer girls are with their family as adults. That’s more the big I’m worried about as when I told my husband he said that sounded smug

My mother was also obsessed with having a girl. She didn’t have another child because she got her girl first time. All I heard growing up was how daughters were best because daughters stay close to their family. We don’t speak now I’m an adult and we’re much closer to my in-laws.

Fair play Op
8 pages of frothing for barely a couple of posts
cracking return on investment

mumuseli · 12/07/2026 16:46

I would not mention it for now, but just try to redeem yourself by acting nice and normal ;-) in front of her going forward.
Hopefully you can get to know her better over time, and then once you’re feeling closer to her, you could always explain it then, in the context of “OMG I’m sorry I behaved like a weirdo when I met you… it was because I thought you had a girl as well, and I’m so sorry I seemed like I was implying it would be better to have a girl - I was a bit doolally with my pregnancy news”..

Mummypie21 · 12/07/2026 16:46

I'm a boy mum and I wouldn't be bothered. I would have liked one of each but I'm just happy I have my two sons (after going through IVF).

I would be a bit amused if you were OTT but I wouldn't be offended or jealous.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/07/2026 16:46

Dont say anything more.Im a boy mum and if someone was ecstatic about having a girl I wouldn't give a shit.

tinygingermum · 12/07/2026 16:45

She probably thinks you are an idiot

pigsDOfly · 12/07/2026 16:44

Flyinpig · 12/07/2026 15:15

The worse part of this is assuming she wants girls. I personally was so scared of having a girl and wanted boys. She might well be thinking poor you.

And just to balance it, being a boy mum brings a pride like no other.

Edited

You sound just as ridiculous as the OP.
