Should I apologise to this mum?

I’ve recently had the scan to find out that I’m having a girl and to say I’m thrilled is an understatement as I desperately wanted a girl and honestly would have kept going until I got one.

I was talking to a Mum at my gym before the class started who I was sure also had a daughter. She asked me if I knew what I was having and I told her I was having a girl and in my excitement I did get a bit carried away in my enthusiasm about having a girl rather than a boy.

The mum didn’t say much in reply and then the class started so I didn’t think much of it until I was in the cafe after and saw her with her child who is definitely a boy.

I know feel super awkward about it as I think I might have come across a bit OTT about having a girl and I’m a bit worried it might have come across as a bit smug to a boy mum and like I was rubbing her face in it which definitely wasn’t my intention

I was lying in bed replaying the conversation and i just keep cringing. I’m wondering if I need to apologize to her tomorrow or would it make it worse ??

There is quite a bit social side to my gym with lots of activities for mums and little ones which I know this Mum is very involved in so I really don’t want to get off on the wrong foot.

Does anyone have any advice ?

Every single mother with only ds I know have all admitted they would have loved a dd too.

I love my ds dearly but would have also loved a dd.

I often get asked if I’ll try for a dd. My answer is no as I’m a single parent, hopefully I get a DGD.

It’s taboo to admit on mumsnet but in the majority of cases I know, my family included, paternal grandmothers always get the short straw.

pastadish · 12/07/2026 18:31

Why would you assume you’re rubbing her face in not having a girl? She just thought you are a strange person for going on like that not because she’s consumed with jealousy that you got a girl and she didn’t.

CautiousOptimist · 12/07/2026 18:09

Wow OP, I would just have thought you sounded like a right weirdo and wondered whether you were OK, whether the pregnancy was getting to you or you’d had previous losses or something.
Boys are brilliant, I have three. I’m sure girls are brilliant too. I’m absolutely certain gym mum isn’t jealous of you so don’t worry!
Chill our a bit and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and your lovely daughter when she arrives.

Purpleturtle45 · 12/07/2026 18:04

The more you say the worse it gets so I would stop digging!

Weeellokthen · 12/07/2026 17:59

😂😂you want to say sorry to her because you think she's jealous that your having a girl and she drew the short straw by having a boy.
Mumsnetworld gets stranger by the day 😂

PrettyBigThings · 12/07/2026 17:58

Wow just wow. With an attitude like that I’d think I’d want to stay well clear of you now. You’ve not even been fortunate enough to have a healthy baby yet and you’ve decided you’ve got the superior gender and you can “relax”. How incredible rude and thoughtless. I hope you also think twice about rubbing your pregnancy in the nose of others who might themselves wish they could have children, but can’t. I’d stay well clear and rethink how thoughtless you are.

Ewock · 12/07/2026 17:57

I have a ds and add, it never occurred to me to prefer one over the other. My only concern was finding out they were ok. We didn't want to find out if we were having a girl or a boy with either pregnancies.
I really don't understand you at all. You sound very weird and I'd avoid you and think what a strange weirdo

Hallywally · 12/07/2026 17:53

I have one of each and would’ve thought you were a weirdo. Hate all this boy stuff/girl stuff nonsense. Children are individuals and each have their own personalities, interests, strengths and weaknesses. Your attitude is pretty disrespectful and you risk projecting this nonsense onto your daughter who may be nothing like you imagine her to be.

LadyHat · 12/07/2026 17:41

You didn’t sound smug you just sounded like a right twat. I wonder if the other mum has stopped laughing yet!

You also sound like you are going to be an absolutely terrible mother. I feel sorry for your poor baby, she didn’t ask for you as a mum and she deserves better. She will be an individual, her own person. She doesn’t have to conform to your idea of what a girl should be. And as for the idea that girls are closer to their mums than boys, what a ridiculous outdated stereotype. I imagine your daughter will be no contact with you by the time she’s 18 unless you can seriously reflect on your attitude and make some changes fast.

Bloody hell...way too harsh.

Franjipanl8r · 12/07/2026 17:49

What makes you think girls are closer to their families as adults?! Do you have statistics to reference or is that your own bias? The only faux pas is your overt gender stereotyping.

BecauseofyouIlearntnottotrust · 12/07/2026 17:48

“I desperately wanted a girl and honestly would have kept going until I got one”

what the hell would you have done with the boys?!

Ewock · 12/07/2026 17:47

I have one of each and boys are way better, so she'll have the last (smug) laugh 😬😬😬😬😁

What an awful thing to say about your daughter

Plasticdreams · 12/07/2026 17:42

It’s a personal thing. Not all mums want to be girl mums and vice versa. I only really wanted boys but would have been happy with a girl but it genuinely wasn’t a big deal. Hopefully she was just happy for you. Oh and Congratulations!

Well I mainly I was just saying that I feel I can just relax and enjoy pregnancy / motherhood now that I know for certain I’m
having a girl.

But I did also say about how much closer girls are with their family as adults. That’s more the big I’m worried about as when I told my husband he said that sounded smug

Nope - you are definitely being weird.

NovemberMorn · 12/07/2026 17:37

When I was pregnant I was absolutely convinced I was having a girl, it was long before scans became available that indicated what sex the baby would be.
I bought quite a few babygirl clothes and looked forwards to being the proud mum of a daughter. Then, when the baby was born and the midwife announced... "It's a boy" – it felt so right. He is now a beautiful big strong strapping man.

Moral, as long as your baby is well, be thankful and happy, and NEVER presume one will be more loved than the other.

lol. My DH is much closer to his family than I am to mine. Both very loving and normal families, but he speaks to his mum every day and I speak to mine once a month. We live 20 minutes from his mum and an hour from mine.

You might find that that smugness suits you less well in 20 years.

Coconutter24 · 12/07/2026 17:35

I’m a bit worried it might have come across as a bit smug to a boy mum and like I was rubbing her face in it

Why? Do you think every boy mum wishes they’d had a girl? Don’t be so silly, forget the conversation and move on

Llamallamafruitpyjama · 12/07/2026 17:34

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 12/07/2026 17:22

I have a friend who wanted a girl, and she treats her boy like an afterthought because she wanted another girl. And in that group, all my friends had girls first and had a little smug chat about how they were so pleased they were guaranteed a girl, and I have an only boy.

Whilst many PP on this thread have said they'd just raise their brows and think you were an idiot, there's every possibility that you've been able absolute twat to a woman who's sick to death of those comments.

Me, I was pleased to learn that I had a boy just because I found everyone guessing insufferable (and everyone guessed girl, so I was pleased to shove it in their faces!). He's an amazing child, and it's nothing to do with his sex, it's because he's a lovely little fellow.

I’d also think she was a twat as I only have boys and am so fed up of bitchy comments about oh having a girl means they will always be close to you, boys always choose their in laws when they get older etc etc, I’d hate to be the boys side when they have children and on and on.

bittertwisted · 12/07/2026 17:32

Lauraaah · 12/07/2026 16:39

A lot of the replies on this thread are FAR weirder than the OP. The woman made a mild social faux pas and has the presence of mind to realise it may not have landed well, yet the response of some posters is to start calling her names like silly playground bullies 🫠 Unbelievable.

You’re fine OP - we all say things we regret sometimes and I’m sure those berating you aren’t exactly flawless humans themselves. No need to apologise and risk further awkwardness - just chalk it up to experience, move on and pick a more neutral topic with her next time. Congrats on your pregnancy 💐

The problematic comment was ‘relax for the rest of pregnancy’
it goes beyond a perfectly acceptable excitement, and moves in to an active fear and disappointment in having a boy, which is unpleasant

i love my 2 nieces beyond reason, I don’t like any of the teenage girls are a nightmare comments

to actively not enjoy pregnancy until confirmed you are having a girl is a direct and deliberate negativity towards boys, not a healthy approach to pregnancy

Dumbledora8 · 12/07/2026 17:32

Crwysmam · 12/07/2026 16:56

Why do you think that all boy mums are disappointed and desperate to have girls? After being a mum for 22 yrs I think if I’d been handed a baby girl all those years ago, knowing what I know now, I’d have handed her straight back.

Having a girl is no walk in the park, I have two nieces and I’m one of three girls, they are so much more trouble than boys.

Like other posters have pointed out, she probably thought that you were as mad as a box of frogs.

Jesus fucking Christ. You sound like an absolute delight.

Llamallamafruitpyjama · 12/07/2026 17:32

WhatAMarvelousTune · 12/07/2026 13:48

Clearly OP thinks having a boy is worse. Otherwise there is no reason to phrase it as “rubbing her face in it”. You don’t rub people’s faces in things that are good.

An apologise along the lines of “I’m sorry I rubbed it in your face that you have a boy, I didn’t mean to gloat about my superior girl” would go down like a cup of cold sick I think! And would be worse than any offence she might have taken from the original comments.

I’d already think OP is a weirdo and not someone I’d want to socialize with or have around my boys tbh as she obviously thinks female children are somehow superior 😆
If she then apologized for rubbing my face in her having a girl I’d think she was really weird, rude and a bitch.
just leave this woman alone OP! Your weirdness isn’t the ladies fault. If she avoids you at the social stuff you know why.
