AIBU to expect my daughter’s auntie to ensure she gets home safely at 3am?

My DD who has just turned 18 is expected to get home by herself and her Auntie run pub. I’m talking about 3 o’clock finishes, in a national chain of pubs, in a rough area in city Centre Liverpool.

I was expecting her Auntie to drop her off when she had 3 o’clock finishes, but no she’s expected to walk up and get an Uber. I would give her daughter a lift home without a question.

I can’t say anything because myself and her father are split up and it would end up being a massive argument. I would be saying as a father, she should be dropping her off 😡

Thank you for all your input - but we don’t seem to have the same opinion about family being family which is beyond me.

Thank you so much 🌸

When they are in work she isn’t family though she is an employer. Do you expect her to get all staff home?

Shinyandnew1 · 12/07/2026 13:48

If the aunt knew you were expecting her to fork out for transport home for the daughter after every shift, I expect she would have given the job to someone else!

I also expect that the aunt will see this post before too long. There is some massively identifying information here!

Passaggressfedup · 12/07/2026 13:44

Does the auntie live upstairs from the pub? How long would it take her to drive her home and back? How many times a week?

How close were they growing up?

bittertwisted · 12/07/2026 13:43

DS GF worked in concert square when they were at uni

my lovely boy used to walk in to town at 2am to walk her back to Kenny because he was worried about this exact same taxi issue

it was entirely his choice, and makes me so proud every time I think about it

I think the fact that her boss is her Aunt is a red herring. She's an 18 year old with a job and should be treated the same as anyone else who works there.

This. She’s no different to anyone else who works there. When you apply for/accept a job, you have to factor in how you are going to get yourself there and back. Assuming someone else will do it for you, is foolish.

No-most people posting seem to agree that you are being a CF, but you disagree😂

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 12/07/2026 13:41

How far is the pub from your home OP? How long would it take for the Aunt to walk to her car (assuming it’s not parked on site, as it’s a ‘no-vehicle’ location), drive your DD home, drive back to her parking spot, park the car and walk to her pub (which presumably she would have to do alone, much later than 3am)?

Can you see how you are being unreasonable here? She will also have to clean down and lock up after this…so what, to you, might seem like the ‘right thing to do’, is actually really inconvenient for the Aunt!

Why bother asking on AIBU, if you're just going to ignore the responses?

Family are indeed family.

And some family members will always take the piss.

Are you going to acknowledge that your daughter should have discussed the possibility of being driven home by her aunt before accepting the job?

Or are you going to continue to ignore it?

MargaretThursday · 12/07/2026 13:39

I assume she only got the job because Auntie runs it.
It's tough for 18yos to get jobs currently so you can try pushing it, but I suspect Auntie will decide it's easier to have one of the loads of other applicants who aren't going to expect her to give a lift home.

paaaj · 12/07/2026 13:39

She got her the job I assume? How is that not family being family.

Lotsofsnacks · 12/07/2026 13:39

She’d be better working in retail in a shop
maybe, as with pubs and clubs she’s always going to be looking to get home at gone midnight

I think she should get a taxi

Random321 · 12/07/2026 13:39

You arw being completely unreasonable.

Your DD's aunt was decent enough to give her a job.

She's not responsible for getting her home.

You sound very entitled.

@ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats
well, it’s rough to me, two matrix police vans!

As is the norm anywhere in town at 3am at the weekend! What do you think is going to happen to her in the 2 minutes it takes her to get to Hanover Street?

If you’ve decided it’s too rough for her to be there alone, why don’t you do what loads of people have suggested and get an uber to collect your daughter at the end of her shift?

Then you’ll be there ready and waiting for her.

Sirzy · 12/07/2026 13:36

It’s a very short walk from concert square to somewhere you can easily get into a taxi!

PurpleThistle7 · 12/07/2026 13:36

I think it’s for your daughter to decide if she wants to do this job and get herself back and forth or not. She’s certainly old enough to decide for herself. Can’t imagine why you’d assume a lift would be given every single time.

Portmore · 12/07/2026 13:35

Would she better off looking for another job with hours that suit her eg supermarket, shopping centre.

It's not normal for the manager of a pub to take responsibility for staff getting home. Is she being paid on payroll for this job or is a favour?

No, unfortunately not my ex doesn’t live in Liverpool he lives in Manchester.

I don't mean this to be insensitive, and i'm genuinely sorry to hear of your past health troubles, but the point we're all making is that it's easy to say you would do something, when you know it's not actually possible.

Anyway, has your daughter handed in her notice and learned not to accept jobs where she's assumed she'll be getting a lift home, without so much as discussing it with the driver first?

ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats · 12/07/2026 13:31

JemimaTiggywinkles · 12/07/2026 13:28

Lols, concert square is not a rough area of Liverpool 😂

I wouldn’t expect an 18yo to get a lift home after work unless the aunt lives really close to the niece.

100% this!
