No party bag for DS

girlmummy25 · 11/07/2026 21:02

My SIL done a small party for my 10 year old niece which my DD age 7 and DS age 3.5 (nearly 4) went to. There was 11 kids there.
When everybody was leaving her DD handed out the party bags and there was not enough for my DD and DS.
When I asked her if my kids were meant to have one she said ‘oh your DD should of had one but I think another kid has took it’ but nothing about my DS as she didnt get him one!!
My DS was really crying and my DD was on the verge of tears as all the other kids were opening their party bags infront of them.
I was so angry I left (I was meant to be staying for a bit longer as it was at my MIL & FILs house), as I was leaving her partner was rummaging around and managed to chuck a few sweets in 2 bags and gave them to my kids.
ok so maybe my DD not having one was an honest mistake from someone else taking it but to not even get my DS one, I was fuming.
also why on earth was she 2 party bags short in the first place when she knew exactly who was coming - there was no unexpected guests.
some may say oh its because DS is a boy and younger but in my eyes that shouldnt matter.
AIBU by being so angry about this?

I wouldn’t have invited you in the first place. No 10 year old girl really wants a 3 year old cousin gatecrashing their party. I suspect something happened here re communication. She was unreasonable to have invited yours and then not got them something. You were unreasonable to be fuming and kicking up a fuss. Her poor 10 year old daughter was probably very embarrassed by both of you tbh. This party was about her and has seemingly been overshadowed by some drama over party bags.

My children pre high school age very much knew that family were important and part of the deal. I don’t want children who think it’s all about them. Would not have crossed my mind to
not give a younger child a party bag, in fact I would have made one especially for his age

Can you honestly say that you wouldnt feel bad for your kid if 9 other kids are all in a circle opening party bags onto the floor and playing with the stuff and your kids are just watching them?

Yeah, I think this is too harsh.

I also hate party bags, I hate all the tat.

But kids love them. I would never throw a party and not give out party bags at the end (ideally without plastic tat), and my kids would also be really upset if they didn’t receive a party bag when all the other kids did.

You speak like someone who’s never seen a line of 4 and 7 year olds line up at the end of a party to say “thank you for having me” and receive their party bag. Of course they would be upset not to get one, and if it’s your kids that would be difficult to witness.

@girlmummy25i sympathise, but it’s done now. Just need to try and forget about it and move on. Hopefully your little ones are ok.

Well, she’s modelling ‘If you don’t get what you want, it’s fine to throw yourself about screaming’.

And
"When things go wrong, it's not an innocent mistake. Someone has done something awful to you intentionally."

Happytaytos · 11/07/2026 21:16

Oh fgs really. Are you sure you're not one of the kids with an attitude like that and walking out.

A human made a mistake, move on.

Fuming ??? Whats the history here ??
fuming and storming off is waaaay ott

they miscounted as you were family maybe didn't add you to the same whstapp group
honest mistake or do you suppose it was on purpose ?

You need to start your own thread. This one is about missing party bags! And you’re not going to get compensation for them tossing breastmilk! They were operating according to their safety guidelines. They couldn’t test the milk to check whether it was milk because it was frozen. The safety of everyone on the flight is more important than milk for a baby past the age of weaning. I get that it’s frustrating when it takes such an effort to pump, but that’s life. They couldn’t be sure it was safe.

Edited

I just want to point out that breast milk or formula is a baby's food main source until the age of 12 months.

Strangerthanfictions · 12/07/2026 01:31

Kids absolutely buzz for party bags, I used to be absolutely sweating at my kids party at the awful thought of not having enough, I always had tonnes extra to make sure everyone got one and if a wee sibling was wandering about when they were handed out they got one too (yes OTT but seeing them looking at everyone opening theirs crushes me) but that's generally how I found other mums too, plenty to give it to any kids. To be honest I genuinely hate them- bags of total tat and sugar that you throw away but for whatever reason they are so important to children. I often do books and/or sweetie cones. I swear I'd have opened my purse and given your kids a tenner each or ransacked the kitchen to put something together for them, I couldn't bear the thought of their wee faces. My sister in law gave one to my 14 year old daughter at our nieces 3rd birthday recently as she didn't want her to feel left out. Maybe we are all big softies but I would have done the same

Yes. I can honestly say I wouldn’t and didn’t feel bad. In the greater scheme of things this really doesn’t matter. I am old now, my DC are in their 20s and 30s. Life is short enough, don’t waste any time on this. You have wasted today already.

She probably thought he wouldn’t be bothered about a party bag. Bad mistake on her part but you seem unreasonably angry about it. Back story with SIL maybe?

WearyAuldWumman · 12/07/2026 01:11

Rothburypixie · 11/07/2026 21:59

She probably just didn’t get enough and its “more polite” to upset family than the other little kids. If she was only getting the party bags this morning she was probably stressed and panic buying. Yeah its annoying but I wouldn’t have got overly angry about it tbh.

Probably that's what happened, but still upsetting for the OP's children.

I would be upset as well OP, simply because it would mean a lot to children and they would feel left out without understanding the error or seeing it through an adult lense.

Ignore the rude comments calling your children ungrateful or stating you are ridiculous.

Well you just explain it. "The party bags got muddled and we're family so we take a step back. I'll get you an ice cream on the way home." Sorted.

If the party bags were in a muddle, sounds like a case of "family hold back"

I do think you are being rather unreasonable over a few sweets. Mistakes happen.

Snooples · 12/07/2026 00:43

This is where you teach your kids life isn’t always fair and you try and equip them to handle unfair or disappointing situations, or how to self advocate… Although it sounds like that ship has sailed (and then sunk!)

For a party at nursery, I once had to make up party bags for several children aged three and four and one child aged one. I gave the one-year-old a different party bag from the others which contained a sensory ball, another small toy suitable for his age and some chocolate buttons. It wasn't difficult!

You didn't have to make the 1 year old a party bag, he was 1 he wouldn't care a jot.

The OPs children would have been easily placated with the knowledge they didn't need a party bag because they were getting extra time with their cousins and presumably could then have longer on the bouncy castle once everyone had gone.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 12/07/2026 00:38

beautyqueeen · 12/07/2026 00:27

So you’d rather him be given a bag of unsuitable, potentially dangerous items, instead of distracting and diverting him like a normal parent?

Delphiniumandlupins · 12/07/2026 00:26

She had obviously made up party bags for 10 year old girls and not thought to do one for the toddler cousin. Probably didn't expect them to be opened at the house either. So it's been a mistake rather than a deliberate insult. It would have been a good opportunity to distract your DC and promise them a treat on the way home.

She should have done something for every child who was there, bar babies. You don’t leave a three year old out, you just adapt the contents.

Maray1967 · 12/07/2026 00:33

And I would have got my DC out of there asap and expect DH to explain to his DP why we were leaving.

Maray1967 · 12/07/2026 00:32

Ilovelifeverymuch · 11/07/2026 22:21

It's fine not to provide party bags at parties but that's not the issue here. If you decide not to give out parity bags fine it applies to everyone, if you decide to give out party bags then it makes no sense not having enough for all the kids.

Yes we can argue about OPs reaction and if it was OTT or not but if you invite x number of kids then make sure you have x number of party bags or skip them all together.

Children that age aren't going to get it when all the other children are opening party bags and they are left out

This. Surely every host makes sure there are enough plus maybe a spare?

That was really poor of her. As OP says, if they were being given out at the door it wouldn’t have been so obvious, but to give them out while the kids are all still there and have one it two children holding nothing is bloody awful. I wouldn’t normally kick off in a situation like that, but I would have pointedly and loudly asked, SIL, where are my DCs’ party bags?

beautyqueeen · 12/07/2026 00:27

RampantIvy · 11/07/2026 23:46

Oh, so that makes it OK then - to upset a little boy and make him feel left out? Hmm

Oh purleese ...

"Who's taking a 3yo to a 10yo birthday party in the first place?"
It's family, fgs. 🤦‍♀️Neither here, nor there.

It kind of is relevant, since OP is losing her shit over a missing party bag. He was there because he's family. At a pre-teen's party. It's too much to be 'so angry'.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 12/07/2026 00:08

You were fuming?
So angry, you left.

Are you always this dramatic?
I suggest you get a grip.
