What do you do with it/have with it, how do you cook it?

I have some, some salad, wraps, hummus etc

Dry fried in a pan, doesn't need oil imo. Or cover with flour and paprika and make a veggie burger out of it. Very nice stuff, have some in the fridge :-)

Barnabyted · 11/07/2026 17:10

I have it grilled with baby tomatoes, avocado, little gem lettuce (heated in a frying pan with a tiny amount of oil)), hummus, pitta bread and a dressing made up of balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, jarred red peppers, chives and olive oil. This recipe is from the Leon ‘Salad’ book.
Really scrummy.

Serve with what tho

just serve it with some tomato and cucumber olives or maybe watermelon on a really hot day. Its part of a meze or a light lunch not a full meal

Frazzledinmyforties · 11/07/2026 17:02

Grated on any pasta is lovely. Grilled/ airfried in a wrap with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers or olives goes well with hummus or tzatziki.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/07/2026 17:02

Grilled until golden then stuffed into a Greek style flatbread with garlic Mayo, rocket and smoked ham (or Lountza if you can get it anywhere).

I saw some cheffy type on a cooking programme once grating it, either Turkish/Greek or something like that and using it like that. Never seen it done and I want to try it.

It depends on the age of the halloumi. My dad was greek cypriot and we had vats of halloumi sent over from Cyprus in the 60s .

Most of the halloumi you buy in the shops is softer but as it ages it gets harder and you can grate it more like a softer parmisan,

Can you not ask in food/recipes? It's not an AiBU question. Mumsnet is not AIBU and AIBU alone.

Why does it bother you?

I cut into cubes, then soak in hot water for half an hour, then dry it, whack it in the oven sprinkled with a bit of oil and curry powder, then serve it with biriani (sp?) style rice and a glob of mango chutney. The soaking makes it less salty and less chewy. Although we still call it squeaky cheese. The kids love it! But I'm sure lots of people would frown at my choice of meal! Also grilled with avocado, bacon, mushrooms, egg, sourdough, grilled tomatoes!

ClarkeandNewman · 11/07/2026 16:52

I fry it with some jarred peppers and basil and put on top of a cold rice salad with lots of herbs and some pine nuts.

Air fry. Spray a tiny bit of oil on if you like. I don't bother. Turn over half way through cooking.

Serve with what tho

In a burger with garlic mayo, roasted red pepper, chilli jam and chorizo.

PeloMom · 11/07/2026 16:38

Grill it in a pan, bbq or airfry. Slice it first but not too thin, not too thick; I’d say about .5cm thickness. It’s delicious!

FlipFlopZebra · 11/07/2026 16:36

I’m veggie and don’t really like egg so I sometimes have it on occasion as a breakfast bap. Grilled halloumi with grilled vine tomatoes in a breakfast bap, bit of olive oil when you grill it and season it too. Think it was our local farm shop who had this as their veggie option for breakfast and I’ve loved it ever since.

MmeDubois7 · 11/07/2026 16:33

With hamburgers (on hamburger roll), as part of a salad, with rice, on a roll or a tortilla.

I saw this too and was trying to recall what the recipe was 🤔

mamaduckbone · 11/07/2026 16:25

All these recipes sound incredible - I love halloumi.
I like it in a salad with green lentils, griddled courgettes, broad beans, red onion, pomegranate seeds, mint and a red wine vinegar dressing, then coat the halloumi in harissa, pan fry and add at the last minute.
it’s also really good grated, pan fried in a dry non stick pan and used as a garnish / topping for salad.

RoseOliviaAu · 11/07/2026 16:24

I slice it and cook it in a pan with oil, rosemary and honey. Takes 2 minutes

What does it do to the texture, thanks.

Makes the outside crispy when cooked and the inside stays soft (rather than going hard/rubbery).

herbetta · 11/07/2026 16:18

Grated in halloumi & courgette fritters.

SqueakyFromme · 11/07/2026 16:18

CosyDenimShark · 11/07/2026 16:10

Fried with olive oil and Greek seasoning, tossed on a flatbread with mixed salad and tzatziki and some fries.Yum!

That’s how Brewhouse and Kitchen do it, with seared halloumi it’s so good.

BirthdayTrash · 11/07/2026 16:13

Whatever you do, soak the slices or cubes in plain boiling water for 5 mins before draining and patting dry and cooking. It makes the texture utterly gorgeous.

What does it do to the texture, thanks.

DinoLil · 11/07/2026 16:14

Squeaky cheese of the devil!
