AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?

AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?
My husband’s mum and her partner suggested that we all book a cottage in Wales together because they said they wanted to spend some proper time with us as a family.
We booked the cottage for me, my husband, our three children, his mum and her partner. It only sleeps seven, so it was booked for exactly the seven of us.
His mum has now invited another child to come for the whole holiday. Because the cottage only sleeps seven, her partner is now going to sleep in their camper van at night so that the child can take her place inside the cottage.
What makes this harder for me is that his mum and her partner don’t spend a huge amount of time with our three children. They already spend far more time with the child they have invited and are very close to her.
This holiday was their idea. They were the ones who said they wanted to go away with us and spend time with our family. I work full time and have very limited annual leave, so taking a week off is a big thing for me. It now feels as though I’m using that precious time on a holiday that has been completely changed from what I agreed to.
I had already made it clear that I didn’t want anyone else coming. I had also specifically spoken about our last family camping trip and how badly that went.
On that trip, several adults essentially dropped their children at the campsite and then went off to enjoy a relaxing week themselves. The children were left crammed into everybody else’s tents and camper vans, and the adults who had actually stayed at the campsite ended up looking after them all.
I had already said I did not want to be put in that position again. I had that conversation only weeks before this happened, which is partly why I feel so ignored.
The child was asked if she wanted to come and initially said no. I thought that should have been the end of it. Instead, it was brought up again, and she eventually agreed. His mum and partner now feels guilty and wishes they didn’t invite her but it’s done now.
I even suggested that they could simply explain that they had spoken to me and, because of my health and everything that has happened recently, I really needed the holiday to be focused on spending time with my own children. They chose not to do that.
I have PoTS and reactive hypoglycaemia and struggle with dizziness, blackouts, weakness, fatigue and my heart rate shooting up when I stand.
More recently, I was taken into hospital with stroke-like symptoms, including slurred speech, numbness and weakness down one side. Thankfully, a stroke was ruled out, but I’m still experiencing weakness in my arm and leg and problems with my speech at times. I’m now waiting for neurological investigations and neuro physiotherapy.
After such a frightening and exhausting time, I genuinely needed this break. I wanted to use my limited time away from work to spend time with my husband and children, and I hoped the children would finally get some proper time with their grandparents too.
Instead, I now feel as though the focus will mainly be on the child they have invited, because she is the child they already spend the most time with. They have changed the sleeping arrangements and moved one of the original adults out of the cottage to make sure she can come.
It isn’t that I dislike the child, because I don’t, and none of this is her fault. My issue is entirely with the adults. They invited another child onto a holiday that was already full, despite knowing I didn’t want anyone else coming and despite the fact that this was supposed to be their opportunity to spend time with us and our children.
I’m also worried that I’ll end up helping to look after her. If she becomes upset, plays up, wants to go home or needs lots of attention, it will affect the entire holiday. If there are any major problems, her mum will need to come and collect her. I cannot take responsibility for another child while managing my health and looking after my own three.
I feel like I have no choice but to go, put a smile on my face and make sure my children have a lovely time. They’ve been looking forward to it and would be devastated if we cancelled. It wouldn’t be fair for them to lose their holiday because of a decision they had no part in.
But for me, it no longer feels like the holiday I agreed to use my annual leave for. I’m not looking forward to it anymore. It feels like a waste of the very limited time I get off work, and I feel resentful, anxious and hurt that the one boundary I clearly set was ignored.
I’ve decided that after this I won’t agree to any more family holidays, camping trips or similar gatherings, because I don’t trust that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
AIBU to feel this was unfair, particularly when the holiday was their idea because they claimed they wanted to spend time with us and our children?

Your DH, when his mum pipes up about another holiday together, again, needs to be straight in there with a decline; for your sanity. It’s a straight no thx every time. Next hols don’t tell them
where u are going, you go as a 5 only. You are so stressed about this op, it’s not worth it.

I‘m sorry but I think you are completely overthinking this, to the point that your thinking seems catastrophic. So it’s not going to be exactly as you thought, but she’s a kid. There’s no reason for a kid to completely and utterly destroy your holiday and make it a complete waste of time and ruin your physical and mental health. You’ve said it yourself, the kid is nice. Sorry if I missed it but what relation is the child to mil?
Just be very clear with your boundaries though ie you are not be used as a babysitter for this child. They have not to fuck off out and leave her with you, or at least not unless the favour is returned and they watch your children. But really, I’m not really getting what is so bad about this arrangement.

Maybe you haven’t read the OP where she talks about her previous experiences with the child?
What makes you think the OP is exaggerating rather than talking from experience? Or that the OP’s exoerience is the same than yours (with very different children and family dynamics)

Yet another of those ‘oh silly woman who is just hysterical’. I didn’t think patriarchy and sexism was still so entrenched. It’s sad

We need an update tomorrow OP..
Once the owner has said no to them!

Shinyandnew1 · 12/07/2026 19:46

So, you’ve caved and it’s happening anyway?! How bizarre

AliceMcK · 12/07/2026 19:39

I would be saying on arrival that I’ve made my feelings clear on what you’ve done, it’s not fair on us or our children that you have chosen to bring another child who will take up all your attention against our wishes. That you will not be putting up with any bad behaviour from the child, they are solely in charge of dealing with her behaviour and if she is mean just once to your children that she’s sleeping in the van with her grandparents.

id also be warning my DH that he better back you up in anything you say, no playing peacemaker or burying his head.

i do wonder why they were so insistent on not speaking to her mum, they are definitely hiding something like she was always coming along.

XenaBallerina · 12/07/2026 19:38

Some Mumsnet threads are really awful to read. This is one of them.

Your MIL has disregarded everything you’ve said to her. Your lips may have been moving and if she’s not deaf she’s heard you but she certainly hasn’t listened. What a horrible woman. In your condition you should be the absolute priority and it makes me feel blessed to be part of two families who wouldn’t have dreamt of railroading or disregarding any decisions or requests made.
Sadly you have a weak willed husband and a bully of a MIL and you’re just expected to fall into line. That’s what your DH will have known from day 1. He’s lived it. He may not like it but can’t do anything about it.

Holiday cottages usually have terms and conditions. 7 is not 8 and they have every intention of flouting. I’d have no hesitation in kicking a family out that took the piss. I don’t shy away from confrontation if it’s necessary. Insurances wont pay out on cover and you can’t ’opt out’ of liability. It’s a no brainer you can’t do it. It’s a horrible position to put the cottage owner in.

Sorry this is happening to you.
Show your DH this thread just in case he thinks this is normal.

Ocelotfeet27 · 12/07/2026 19:30

I would tell the owner when you arrive - oh Bob Susan and tagalong child are staying elsewhere in the camper van - they keep insisting they are staying with us but we've told them no. Hopefully they don't try and force their way in, they are the sort! *tinkly laugh. I've told them it would invalidate your insurance - that's true isn't it? [Hope owner says yes]

Stand absolutely firm on them staying in the camper. Do not let them in. Tell them the owner said they cannot stay due to insurance. Minimise your time with them. Do not let this one go. They will try and push you- practice how to say no nicely. 'I've been clear you can't stay Susan.' 'That won't be possible Susan ' etc.

SandyHappy · 12/07/2026 19:30

Also, depending where you are going, check the news, there has been a major incident declared due to a wildfire that broke out at Conwy this morning, if you are going to north wales, check travel advisements before you go as there may be road closures/detours in place.

SandyHappy · 12/07/2026 19:28

I'd be cutting them off at the knees, but seeing how you just refuse to do that.

Just plan the whole holiday for yourselves, go out wherever you want to go and don't tell them where you are going, sort out your own food, just pretend they aren't there basically.

Aethelred · 12/07/2026 19:23

They will have to have the child in the campervan with them. You are not responsible for the extra child - they are.

Thehappygardener · 12/07/2026 19:23

It’s very annoying and upsetting when a family member invites someone else as well, without having the courtesy to discuss it first with you. I suspect your MiL knew what your sensible response would be.

My adult stepdaughter (I have three adult stepchildren) has form for this as well. Four times we’ve booked a holiday with her, her husband and their three young children, in Europe, on the understanding that it was just us. And each time she’s told us after we’ve paid the money, that she’s also invited her in-laws. Granny-in-law doesn’t like us and makes no bones about it. And lots of ‘games’ are played by her.

So we’ve now decided not to go away with my stepdaughter and her children. We now plan to invite them for weekends away, and on our terms.

Life is too short, as are our holidays (!) for these shenanigans.

Please have a good holiday, whoever comes along, peaceful and calm 💕

WhistPie · 12/07/2026 19:21

You have got a totally shit husband OP. A decent husband would be sorting all this out and looking after you. Yours isn't.

RandomMess · 12/07/2026 19:19

I would just disinvite the in-laws after tomorrow 🤷‍♀️

Voneska · 12/07/2026 19:15

I know what I would do but it wouldn't suit everyone else. I would book another venue, to stay in, nearby; becausr Iwould be fuming that I had lost control of the situation. I know that, if I'm p......Ed to start with then I would not ever be happy. I would book another venue nearby but make it a shorter stay( but not mention that it's shorter)until the day came to leave. This smart move will make me happy that I will not be tricked into doing dhit that I did not plan for. SORTED!!!!!

Marmalade71 · 12/07/2026 19:11

I’m appalled by your husband not stepping up to prevent this. He should be telling them in no uncertain terms that if they ever want to see him or their grandchildren again then they won’t show up. Pathetic.

dementedmummy · 12/07/2026 18:46

Heathercost · 12/07/2026 16:40

I think they already know this. I’ve never ever spoken up for myself. I’m docile and I get on with a lot of they know they’ve done wrong. She said she felt sick. She should never have invited her but it’s done bow. She couldn’t have felt that sick or she would have not picked her up early

If you can't stick up for yourself face to face it's time for a text message " I'm really disappointed that you have invited someone else on a holiday that I have paid for without having the courtesy to ask first. I have limited time off. I wanted to spend this week with my children and you without accommodating anyone else. Let me be clear. I have plans with my children. If you chose to join those plans, I expect you to both pay and look after the child. I will not be looking after the child in any way. I won't be providing snacks, paying for the child or making any accomodations for the child's behaviour. Don't ask me to look after the child or provide for her because I won't. If you find this offensive in any way, remember it is you who has caused the problem. It is therefore your problem to solve. I'm really hurt that notwithstanding that I told you how I felt about who I wanted to interact with on this holiday, you have insisted on bringing her and sought to make me out to be difficult. It's not acceptable.

That being said, go on holiday stick to your guns, enjoy your shiny new backbone and the week away with your kids x

LivingMyLifeWithKindness · 12/07/2026 18:43

I think that instead of pootling around asking the cottage owner to save me from a holiday I wouldn’t enjoy and the bad feelings, I’d try to cancel the cottage for a refund (even partial) and rebook a cottage for 4 elsewhere at this point. Put yourself first. X

NancyMeyers · 12/07/2026 18:36

Did I read that correctly that it's not long ago you were taken in an ambulance to hospital, and they still aren't thinking about what's best for you?! No concern about what you need at the moment. They've shown you exactly who they are. Act accordingly.

Mumwithagreenhouse · 12/07/2026 18:32

Also, if the holiday cottage owner finds out that you’ve an extra guest taking you above the max occupancy, they’ll be furious as it will void their insurance for the period of your stay.

Mumwithagreenhouse · 12/07/2026 18:28

It sounds to me like they don’t want you there…. They’ve done this so that you bow out but your partner & DC go. Especially as they then went and asked the girl again, even after you made your feelings clear that you weren’t happy about it. I’d bet my bottom dollar that they want you to flounce

Shatteredallthetimelately · 12/07/2026 18:10

I'd also maybe add that as it was full capacity at the time of booking the owners will only accept those who's names were on the booking form at the time of booking/payment.

Glowingup · 12/07/2026 18:04

Delphiniumandlupins · 12/07/2026 18:03

You don't actually have to contact the holiday cottage owner. You can simply say that you have done so and the RV and its occupants (all 3 of them) are not allowed to use the cottage facilities or park there overnight. If you want to invite them for a day visit or meet elsewhere for a day out together, that's up to you.

This is what I would do. Cheeky beyond belief.
