AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?

AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?
My husband’s mum and her partner suggested that we all book a cottage in Wales together because they said they wanted to spend some proper time with us as a family.
We booked the cottage for me, my husband, our three children, his mum and her partner. It only sleeps seven, so it was booked for exactly the seven of us.
His mum has now invited another child to come for the whole holiday. Because the cottage only sleeps seven, her partner is now going to sleep in their camper van at night so that the child can take her place inside the cottage.
What makes this harder for me is that his mum and her partner don’t spend a huge amount of time with our three children. They already spend far more time with the child they have invited and are very close to her.
This holiday was their idea. They were the ones who said they wanted to go away with us and spend time with our family. I work full time and have very limited annual leave, so taking a week off is a big thing for me. It now feels as though I’m using that precious time on a holiday that has been completely changed from what I agreed to.
I had already made it clear that I didn’t want anyone else coming. I had also specifically spoken about our last family camping trip and how badly that went.
On that trip, several adults essentially dropped their children at the campsite and then went off to enjoy a relaxing week themselves. The children were left crammed into everybody else’s tents and camper vans, and the adults who had actually stayed at the campsite ended up looking after them all.
I had already said I did not want to be put in that position again. I had that conversation only weeks before this happened, which is partly why I feel so ignored.
The child was asked if she wanted to come and initially said no. I thought that should have been the end of it. Instead, it was brought up again, and she eventually agreed. His mum and partner now feels guilty and wishes they didn’t invite her but it’s done now.
I even suggested that they could simply explain that they had spoken to me and, because of my health and everything that has happened recently, I really needed the holiday to be focused on spending time with my own children. They chose not to do that.
I have PoTS and reactive hypoglycaemia and struggle with dizziness, blackouts, weakness, fatigue and my heart rate shooting up when I stand.
More recently, I was taken into hospital with stroke-like symptoms, including slurred speech, numbness and weakness down one side. Thankfully, a stroke was ruled out, but I’m still experiencing weakness in my arm and leg and problems with my speech at times. I’m now waiting for neurological investigations and neuro physiotherapy.
After such a frightening and exhausting time, I genuinely needed this break. I wanted to use my limited time away from work to spend time with my husband and children, and I hoped the children would finally get some proper time with their grandparents too.
Instead, I now feel as though the focus will mainly be on the child they have invited, because she is the child they already spend the most time with. They have changed the sleeping arrangements and moved one of the original adults out of the cottage to make sure she can come.
It isn’t that I dislike the child, because I don’t, and none of this is her fault. My issue is entirely with the adults. They invited another child onto a holiday that was already full, despite knowing I didn’t want anyone else coming and despite the fact that this was supposed to be their opportunity to spend time with us and our children.
I’m also worried that I’ll end up helping to look after her. If she becomes upset, plays up, wants to go home or needs lots of attention, it will affect the entire holiday. If there are any major problems, her mum will need to come and collect her. I cannot take responsibility for another child while managing my health and looking after my own three.
I feel like I have no choice but to go, put a smile on my face and make sure my children have a lovely time. They’ve been looking forward to it and would be devastated if we cancelled. It wouldn’t be fair for them to lose their holiday because of a decision they had no part in.
But for me, it no longer feels like the holiday I agreed to use my annual leave for. I’m not looking forward to it anymore. It feels like a waste of the very limited time I get off work, and I feel resentful, anxious and hurt that the one boundary I clearly set was ignored.
I’ve decided that after this I won’t agree to any more family holidays, camping trips or similar gatherings, because I don’t trust that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
AIBU to feel this was unfair, particularly when the holiday was their idea because they claimed they wanted to spend time with us and our children?

Surely she is your niece not just your husbands? As niece you PIL’s are grandparents to her too why such loathing. One minute you say you like her then say you don’t. There will be reasons why she is included which won’t be to make your life difficult. I think you are being somewhat self obsessed. Irritated maybe because you want all the attention on your children but that is not very family friendly to your husband. I don’t think he’s weak I think he’s disappointed. You are married his family are your family stop being horrid.

Horrid? Are you Enid Blyton?
An extra child can change the whole dynamic.
Op's health is poor - she doesn't want to be stuck looking after an extra (difficult)child, the MIL invited her without asking, the insurance will be invalid.
The MIL is the horrid one here, and the weak DH is allowing it.

I think they already know this. I’ve never ever spoken up for myself. I’m docile and I get on with a lot of they know they’ve done wrong. She said she felt sick. She should never have invited her but it’s done bow. She couldn’t have felt that sick or she would have not picked her up early

I'd tell her at the beginning of the holiday personally: This is the last holiday we'll be having with you because you've pulled this stunt. So I hope you enjoy it.

Bitemeee · 12/07/2026 22:58

Who are the 20% who think YABU?!

That's wild of your in-laws. Jeez. You don't just invite another person on a holiday without checking first that everyone else is absolutely happy with it.

The whole grandparents focusing more on one grandchild than others is also just horrible. We're in that position and I think it's perhaps difficult for people to understand the hurt if they haven't experienced it - it's so effing weird, it's almost impossible to comprehend unless you see it first hand.

In your shoes, I'd be so angry, upset etc but, being on the outside, I can appreciate that won't get you very far. I'd suggest you hold your chin up, take the high ground, focus on your children, write off any expectations of the in-laws and go about the holiday as if they're not there. You can still enjoy your holiday with your nuclear family and you can be bitter about your in-laws' behaviour afterwards. It genuinely doesn't have to impact your experience with your own children, while you're away. Just imagine it's only you, your husband and them. Eff the in-laws.

ElatedOliveCrow · 12/07/2026 22:53

I would simply let them all go and spend the week either at home relaxing, or working as usual and saving your annual leave for another time, and they can reimburse you for their increased share of the holiday home. Your husband, his mum and her partner can handle the 4 kids and you can get some proper rest (as this will absolutely not be a relaxing holiday given the change in dynamic, and honestly it sounds like you need it). This solves the problem of exceeding the capacity of the holiday home, and they will know you were serious when you said you didn't want them to invite their other granchild.

Lilypad789 · 12/07/2026 22:41

I hate it when random people are invited to things I have said yes to. I said yes based on who would be there not who might end up being there 😂 YANBU IMO.

I‘m sorry but I think you are completely overthinking this, to the point that your thinking seems catastrophic. So it’s not going to be exactly as you thought, but she’s a kid. There’s no reason for a kid to completely and utterly destroy your holiday and make it a complete waste of time and ruin your physical and mental health. You’ve said it yourself, the kid is nice. Sorry if I missed it but what relation is the child to mil?
Just be very clear with your boundaries though ie you are not be used as a babysitter for this child. They have not to fuck off out and leave her with you, or at least not unless the favour is returned and they watch your children. But really, I’m not really getting what is so bad about this arrangement.

You’ve obviously never been in a situation where the golden grandchild dominates everything in a family.

if you read OPs updates she’s explained the relationship and how difficult the child is.

Buffs · 12/07/2026 21:55

Please update us and let us know how it’s going.

SummerDive · 12/07/2026 21:54

Fgs it would be nice if people were reading the OP’s posts…..

The PIL and niece are ALREADY at the place. Have been there for a few days. There is no ‘telling them to not take niece’. It’s done.

And yes the niece might have been disappointed. But it’s her dcs the OP doesn’t want to disappoint!!

Mellowautumnmists · 12/07/2026 21:52

Bookbears · 12/07/2026 21:49

I’m struggling to understand why this is so difficult. Just tell your PIL that the other child can’t come. You’ve paid for the holiday, so they either come by themselves or don’t come at all. It’s not your problem the other kid has got excited and will be let down. She wasn’t invited in the first place.

Too late. PIL and niece are already on their way to the accommodation!

I was up until 5am thinking this this morning. I’d be asking them to as this has nothing to do with me. I’m still fuming. I say I’ve drawn a line. But I don’t think I have. Haha

Just reading this. You could actually speak to the owner, explain the situation and ask them to say when it arrives that the camper van cannot stay on site as it goes over their numbers and signpost them where to stay. Job done. You won't get in trouble with the owner as you have been honest and prevented the issue, and you don't need them staying with you!

CrikeyMajikey · 12/07/2026 21:18

If it’s awful you can always ask them to leave. With a camper they can head off anywhere at any time.

Stationbike · 12/07/2026 21:13

You poor woman, and your poor children.
You have health issues which they are aware of yet your husband and his family still think this is ok.

I feel so sorry for you.
I am glad you are waking up to just little those around you care about your wellbeing.

It is upsetting but empowering.

These are not people to be spending time with.
As for your weak, selfish husband?
You deserve better.

Spineless men are repugnant IMO.
Mind yourself OP.
He certainly isn't going to.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 12/07/2026 21:10

Heathercost · 12/07/2026 16:43

If it wasn’t for the children wanting to spend time with her I’d have 100% done this. I even tested the water but my children are too excited for this. They are young carers they have a hard time with my health. Saw me getting put into an ambulance last week. I can’t let them ruin it for them. I have to suck it up but I know that they care very little for my children and will protect them from them from now on.

This is stopping you dealing with it well.

Contact MIL again today, say you’ve decided to check with the owners and they have been clear, they won’t allow more people staying, including on a van on the drive. So MIL has a choice, she comes without the niece or doesn’t come. You aren’t going to risk your holiday being cut short because the owner throws you out. Can she let you know asap if she’s coming or not as your dcs are really looking forward to spending some time with her and you’ll have to manage their disappointment. But you can not allow niece to come along too.

Drknittingfrog · 12/07/2026 21:10

I second the people suggesting to talk to the owner because of he is the one stating the rules the extra people will have to obey (as in get them kicked out to the campsite and let them pay for their stay in the camper). You may lose the holiday with Grandma in parts but at least you won't lose your family holiday. Go do your thing. And definitely talk to the mum/aunt about ruining your vacation. She's been getting away with it for too long clearly! Be firm OP we are all rooting for you!

How many times do you think these in-laws have taken the OP's kids away on holiday to give OP and her husband a break? I'd bet my house it's zero but she is now 1/4 of the babysitting squad for a child with behaviour issues despite just having been in hospital with symptoms of a stroke.
Wonder how they would have felt if OP invited her brother or sister's child and went "Sorry but she's my niece".

You can still draw a boundary. You can tell them they are not to come to the cottage and to go and have a holiday elsewhere in the camper van. That if they come to the cottage, you will not be spending time with them if the niece is with them. That you will not, under any circumstances, be looking after or feeding the niece, and all her care needs/supervision are 100% their responsibility. Get your bloody useless husband to back you up - why isn't he the one taking this on, they are his family?!

Exactly! All this "He is sad for me, boo hoo". I don't respect men who won't say no to their mothers.

I would make it clear you have not catered for your niece in snacks or budget and she is their responsibility.

Frenzi · 12/07/2026 20:56

If you really cant get out of it you need to go with it and not let it ruin your holiday. Plan lots of things for just your little family to do.

And dont ever agree to go away with them again.

butterpuffed · 12/07/2026 20:52

If the owner booked the cottage for seven people , she didn't mean eight or a camper van on the drive .

I can't understand why nobody has actually asked the owner .

As you booked it , OP , and hate the thought of DH's niece coming, why haven't you been in contact , as you made the booking ? Job done and sorted, no more worries .
.

MeridianB · 12/07/2026 20:37

I’m confused about you worrying that your children will not enjoy the holiday if DN is uninvited (unless I have misunderstood?).

Will they really care if their violent, attention- seeking cousin isn’t coming?

croydon15 · 12/07/2026 20:33

Wingedharpy · 12/07/2026 16:56

Surely the easy way out of this saga is to phone the cottage owner and ask what they think about the "sleeping in the van on the drive" idea.
They won't be impressed, I'm sure, as though only 7 folk will be sleeping in the cottage, 8 folk will be using all the facilities.
When owner says no way can you do this, phone Mil and Co. and tell her, her crew will have to make their own accommodation arrangements, otherwise the owner will cancel your booking.
Job done.

Edited

This - if the owners object to the overcrowding the ILs will need to go back with the child, that could be a good solution for you.
I hope that you and your DC will enjoy the well deserved holiday and that your DH will deal with any problems arising from his niece.
Please update us.

MIL and her DP paid for themselves.

OP and her family paid for themselves.

As it’s self catering then the cost is the same regardless of whether the niece comes or not.

OP expects that MIL will pay for the nieces food and outings, rather than her mum.

I can't see this explicitly stated in any of the OP's posts.

Oldieandgoldie · 12/07/2026 20:31

It’s a bit rough and ready, but something along these lines….? Include specific health issues?

From DH to his parents.

Dear mum & dad, as you know we booked this much needed holiday as a chance for OP and I to spend some relaxing time with our immediate family. As you are now bringing niece and campervan, that takes us into over occupancy. It makes more sense then for you to book a nearby campsite, and we can all get together on the Wednesday for a day out. That also gives OP and I a chance to relax with our children and have our much needed break. Looking forward to seeing everybody on Wednesday. Xxx

SummerDive · 12/07/2026 20:31

What do you want the OP to do when

  • the PIL + niece are already there - Thars how manipulative the PIL are.
  • she doesn’t have the support of her dh who prefers to avoid confrontation
  • her own dcs are looking forward to the holidays WITH THEIR MUM. Esp as they’ve witnessed her been taken to hospital in an ambulance just a week prior
Yes the OP is now in damage limitation zone. But berating her and blaming her ‘for just accepting it’ is really not helpful.
