AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?

AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?
My husband’s mum and her partner suggested that we all book a cottage in Wales together because they said they wanted to spend some proper time with us as a family.
We booked the cottage for me, my husband, our three children, his mum and her partner. It only sleeps seven, so it was booked for exactly the seven of us.
His mum has now invited another child to come for the whole holiday. Because the cottage only sleeps seven, her partner is now going to sleep in their camper van at night so that the child can take her place inside the cottage.
What makes this harder for me is that his mum and her partner don’t spend a huge amount of time with our three children. They already spend far more time with the child they have invited and are very close to her.
This holiday was their idea. They were the ones who said they wanted to go away with us and spend time with our family. I work full time and have very limited annual leave, so taking a week off is a big thing for me. It now feels as though I’m using that precious time on a holiday that has been completely changed from what I agreed to.
I had already made it clear that I didn’t want anyone else coming. I had also specifically spoken about our last family camping trip and how badly that went.
On that trip, several adults essentially dropped their children at the campsite and then went off to enjoy a relaxing week themselves. The children were left crammed into everybody else’s tents and camper vans, and the adults who had actually stayed at the campsite ended up looking after them all.
I had already said I did not want to be put in that position again. I had that conversation only weeks before this happened, which is partly why I feel so ignored.
The child was asked if she wanted to come and initially said no. I thought that should have been the end of it. Instead, it was brought up again, and she eventually agreed. His mum and partner now feels guilty and wishes they didn’t invite her but it’s done now.
I even suggested that they could simply explain that they had spoken to me and, because of my health and everything that has happened recently, I really needed the holiday to be focused on spending time with my own children. They chose not to do that.
I have PoTS and reactive hypoglycaemia and struggle with dizziness, blackouts, weakness, fatigue and my heart rate shooting up when I stand.
More recently, I was taken into hospital with stroke-like symptoms, including slurred speech, numbness and weakness down one side. Thankfully, a stroke was ruled out, but I’m still experiencing weakness in my arm and leg and problems with my speech at times. I’m now waiting for neurological investigations and neuro physiotherapy.
After such a frightening and exhausting time, I genuinely needed this break. I wanted to use my limited time away from work to spend time with my husband and children, and I hoped the children would finally get some proper time with their grandparents too.
Instead, I now feel as though the focus will mainly be on the child they have invited, because she is the child they already spend the most time with. They have changed the sleeping arrangements and moved one of the original adults out of the cottage to make sure she can come.
It isn’t that I dislike the child, because I don’t, and none of this is her fault. My issue is entirely with the adults. They invited another child onto a holiday that was already full, despite knowing I didn’t want anyone else coming and despite the fact that this was supposed to be their opportunity to spend time with us and our children.
I’m also worried that I’ll end up helping to look after her. If she becomes upset, plays up, wants to go home or needs lots of attention, it will affect the entire holiday. If there are any major problems, her mum will need to come and collect her. I cannot take responsibility for another child while managing my health and looking after my own three.
I feel like I have no choice but to go, put a smile on my face and make sure my children have a lovely time. They’ve been looking forward to it and would be devastated if we cancelled. It wouldn’t be fair for them to lose their holiday because of a decision they had no part in.
But for me, it no longer feels like the holiday I agreed to use my annual leave for. I’m not looking forward to it anymore. It feels like a waste of the very limited time I get off work, and I feel resentful, anxious and hurt that the one boundary I clearly set was ignored.
I’ve decided that after this I won’t agree to any more family holidays, camping trips or similar gatherings, because I don’t trust that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
AIBU to feel this was unfair, particularly when the holiday was their idea because they claimed they wanted to spend time with us and our children?

ive tried this. But they have just stuck with well we have invited her now. It’s done. I even said last night that I’m going to have to think this over as this isn’t what we thought and there reaction was just oh please come. It will still be good. I think it’s just made me feel like we don’t matter and that’s what it is. This is the first time we’ve ever booked to do something just us with then

But if you've paid its up to you, not them! They cant invite an extra person on your holiday. Honestly, just cancel it. Hopefully you can book something for fewer people with whatever is left of your budget, just for you and your kids. If not, maybe have some lovely days out.

We have paid. It came up jn conversation a few weeks ago when we were all saying how excited we were to spend some time together. That’s when she said oh yes. And the child is coming. We were so taken aback. I explained how I felt. From what they have said they spoke with the child and explained the long drive ( she has behaviour issues refused to tidy up and can be very much a handful. Doesn’t like long journeys etc) and she said well if she has to tidy up she’s not going. It was then left as that. Last night they’ve asked her again!? Even after knowing how upset we were. And she’s said yes. What I think has happened is her mum has talked her into it because she wants a week off from her. But when they originally said oh she is coming I really did explain how I felt. It isn’t about the child. It’s about that this wasn’t that for us. We do so much with everyone all the time. This was the one time

No is a complete sentence. You tell the child's mother NO.

Esmeraldathe3rd · 13/07/2026 11:27

I'd be telling them they're going to have to park elsewhere. If the owner lives on site they will absolutely tell you to leave. I really don't think they'll let you stay and them leave tbh. I wouldn't personally if I was them. It would just void your whole booking.

Your kids will be devastated and like a previous poster said, it won't affect them in the slightest. His tour wasted money and your kids losing their holiday. You really need to at least ring the owner first. Or your kids will be the ones suffering.

KmcK87 · 13/07/2026 10:57

This is insane. If you don’t want to outright tell them not to bring her then say the owner has explicitly said no more than 7 guests there at any 1 time, but no doubt they’ll find a way around that too.

Im guessing you’re already en route to the cottage op? I would be livid if I were you but my husband would have also put a complete stop to it before it got this far.

Laurmolonlabe · 13/07/2026 10:18

All you can do is never go on a joint holiday again, you have told them you are not happy- so nothing else to be done.

Sounds like it's going to be the holiday from hell and the child is high maintenance 🙄 who's child is she?

whatisheupto · 13/07/2026 09:55

Holiday cottage owner will not allow this. The booking is in your name so you will be responsible for voiding the insurance.

It's not too late, niece just stays at home.

Katey83 · 13/07/2026 09:52

If this were me, I would tell PiL they are no longer welcome on the holiday — unless they can find and pay for their own accommodation away from the cottage where you are staying. You can agree to meet them for days out, but tell them you are not willing to pay for them to ruin your trip. Either they leave the niece behind, or they make their own arrangements. They will throw toys from the pram, but it really isn't your problem. No is no. No. Why on Earth should you pay to accommodate people who do not care about you one bit?

I was up until 5am thinking this this morning. I’d be asking them to as this has nothing to do with me. I’m still fuming. I say I’ve drawn a line. But I don’t think I have. Haha

Could you have a word with the owner, so that they insist the others stay in the van nearby? You can say how concerned you are that this family are at risk of breaking the rules without your consent.

jeaux90 · 13/07/2026 08:52

I feel sorry for this other child.

Satsuma55 · 13/07/2026 08:48

Tell them to bugger off, and go and spend the remainder of their holiday in their campervan. This is ridiculous, I don't understand how you've allowed your holiday to be hijacked.

Shinyandnew1 · 13/07/2026 08:01

It’s your holiday, you’ve paid for it and they are inviting someone else who is likely to ruin it. Put your foot down.

AliceDownTheRabbitHole · 13/07/2026 08:01

I’d contact the owner of the cottage and ask to add an extra child. When they say no, let MIL know she needs to make other arrangements. But do not let them swan off, leaving you with the child you never invited. Good luck x

StandFirm · 13/07/2026 07:57

Just came across this thread and I too think your MIL is a piece of work. I am especially shocked about the health aspect of it. You mention neurological symptoms and unless someone has been experiencing some form of it, few people get that neuro-fatigue is one of the worst things possible. 'Bone tired' doesn't even touch the sides to describe it. I am personally recovering from major surgery and have a similar holiday booked for next week. The only reason I haven't cancelled is because the group I'm with is a) pre-approved and b) very clear on my limitations and what that means for who drives, cooks, cleans and runs around after the kids. Even then, I am anticipating having some days when I'm not good for much. If your MIL truly knows how difficult things are for you and your family right now, she is not only rude and disrespectful, she is downright cruel.

So tell MIL that you've spoken to the owner who has said that the insurance only covers 7 visitors. If you turn up with 8 you'll be asked to leave and everyone will loose their holiday.

ItsOkItsDarkChocolate · 13/07/2026 07:09

@Heathercost

So, what’s the holiday plan? How can you make sure you get some rest and put the childcare of the niece onto the IL’s?

You and hubby need better boundaries with them after this. Well done for speaking up, sounds like hubby and you both need to do this more!

I hope it all goes well enough and you get some rest.

Let go of what you can’t control, it’ll only make you more ill otherwise.

Tbf I've just read all the updates and there aren't any shoeing up saying they're on the holiday

Op's post at 16.25

Said it’s not right and said about the insurance etc. little did we know they were already driving up and staying in the van a few days before the cottage.

EmmaB1309 · 12/07/2026 20:13

I‘m sorry but I think you are completely overthinking this, to the point that your thinking seems catastrophic. So it’s not going to be exactly as you thought, but she’s a kid. There’s no reason for a kid to completely and utterly destroy your holiday and make it a complete waste of time and ruin your physical and mental health. You’ve said it yourself, the kid is nice. Sorry if I missed it but what relation is the child to mil?
Just be very clear with your boundaries though ie you are not be used as a babysitter for this child. They have not to fuck off out and leave her with you, or at least not unless the favour is returned and they watch your children. But really, I’m not really getting what is so bad about this arrangement.

  1. The child is violent to the OP’s children
  2. The MIL has form for leaving the responsibility to the OP
  3. The entire family is quite likely to get kicked out of the cottage anyway. You can’t just show up with a campervan and an extra person. The owner lives on site.
99bottlesofkombucha · 13/07/2026 02:02

the op now needs to say firmly at 4pm or whenever suits ‘you need to go and hang out in the caravan or elsewhere and sort your own dinner, I am unwell and need a quiet evening.’ And shove them out the door.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 13/07/2026 00:48

OP has said it... but the MIL set of a few days early so they had already left for the holiday.

Tocyprusornot · 13/07/2026 00:22

I’m so sorry you don’t feel able to say ‘she’s not coming guys sorry, if that means you don’t either thats too bad, but she’s not invited, we’re not taking someone else’s kid to look after on our holiday’. These aren’t people to worry about upsetting, sounds like they’re no loss

MammaofBree · 12/07/2026 23:36

Concentrate on you and your kids, having fun and being together x

ClayPotaLot · 12/07/2026 23:35

Maybe I’ve been a mug but I do feel I really have tried.

I don't think you have, OP. I don't mean that in a nasty way, but what you've detailed has been ineffective and it's pretty easy to see why. You protest but don't actually do anything. Your MiL knows you wont put your foot down so just ignores your protests.

That has been clear from your very first post where you mention that you told her you didn't want her to invite anyone else and she did anyway. The only way you will stop her is by refusing to go along with it. It may upset your DC a few times while you make it clear you won't let her get away with it, but unless you do, this will happen over and over again.

Brokentoes85 · 12/07/2026 23:34

SummerDive · 12/07/2026 21:54

Fgs it would be nice if people were reading the OP’s posts…..

The PIL and niece are ALREADY at the place. Have been there for a few days. There is no ‘telling them to not take niece’. It’s done.

And yes the niece might have been disappointed. But it’s her dcs the OP doesn’t want to disappoint!!

Tbf I've just read all the updates and there aren't any shoeing up saying they're on the holiday

Brokentoes85 · 12/07/2026 23:33

Absolutely bloody not, this should not be going ahead with your heath situation.

They are a set of pisstakers. And the kid sounds like a nightmare.

You've paid, uninvite them.
