Vegans

I find them a bit meh. I'm happy for them to do their own thing if they leave me alone. I think this is overstepping. Do vegans not have pets? After all, keeping pets is just forcing animals to live and be controlled by humans.

Weird post. It’s like saying all meat eaters are annoying because….I am not a vegan, but try to eat a mostly plant based diet. I think veganism is the future.

Veganism is defintely not the future.

We have two types of vegans around here. One type constantly makes everything about themselves. They never contribute food to potlucks, never host and sulk if they aren't fed well enough when visiting others in their opinion. The other group never makes a fuss. They always invite people over for meals, eat whatever is available when visiting others or bring food and they always bring plenty of food to potlucks.I’ve given up on the first group. My life is too short.

My SIL used to be like the second person you describe - she gave up on veganism and is just pescatarian now which is so much easier but she never made a fuss when she was vegan.

Oh, you accidentally made my coffee with cows milk? No problem I’ll drink it anyway, waste not want not.

Oh this meat free thing you have bought for your bbq actually contains egg? I recognise you trying to include me and I’ll eat it anyway.

Much more practical. Much less annoying.

I have family members who are plant based. They don’t talk about it or act remotely superior. It’s a private thing that matters to them. They care deeply about how animals are farmed. And live their life with as much integrity to their beliefs as possible. They did have a rescue cat that was found frozen in snow as a kitten and had life long breathing problems. They went without themselves to pay for vet bills. The cat lived for 15 years on special diet and an inhaler. Don’t judge. Many vegans are quiet and private about it.
they are good people. I wish I could be so disciplined.

Now I don’t get the point of keeping an animal alive that has no quality of life.

They’re right though. That’s just the facts. The uncomfortable truth for us all is that life on dairy farms isn’t actually like Old Macdonalds farm.

I think it’s fine to teach children where their meat and dairy products come from, without over sanitising the reality.

I clearly wouldn’t hand out graphic leaflets to little children, but for anyone 13+ I think they need full info about the meat and dairy industry to allow them to make an informed choice about their values.

I speak as a lifelong 60 year old vegetarian who tries to be as vegan as possible, and who greatly admires those who are totally vegan.

oh and the only people throughout my life to bang on and on about veganism have been meat eaters, outraged by someone’s vegan or veggie choice when they’re gobbling down cow bottom 🤣🤣🤣🙄

Thats a decision for people to make for themselves, not to have it inflicted on them because someone else thinks they should know.

And it was little kids they were handing these leaflets out to, one of them was dressed in a mascot costume so we're aiming to get very young kids interested before handing out their obscene leaflets.

Thats indefensible.

I know it was available in 90s as I had my son in 97 and was using Quorn for years before that.

I spoke of 15 years... I didn't say start date.

Just congratulate yourself and feel smug.

I don't care what your vendetta is. It's funny.

Are you ok? Genuinely? I’m concerned as your overreaction to my perfectly polite correction of when a food company began, is very odd indeed. Are you having a rough time at the minute? Genuine question by the way?

Gloriia · 12/07/2026 16:38

Werhere · 12/07/2026 11:08

I buy organic farm. Reared blah blah chicken

beyond that, I don’t give it any thought. I just tuck in to my chicken and avo salad.

You buy organic farm. Do you think animals are transported from their organic farm to your plate on a little fluffy clouds, escorted by unicorns?

Have you any idea of the horrific suffering animals endure in slaughterhouses and if you don't care, why is that? Lots of healthier options. Have you heard of legumes for example?

WelshMusicMum · 12/07/2026 15:31

I've been vegetarian since 1987, it's my choice and doesn't often come up in conversation. I also adopt rescued ex racing greyhounds. Since 1997, we've brought 8 greyhounds into our home, we've loved and cherished them and they are/were loving, funny and incredibly loyal. Compared with life in kennels, they probably thought they'd died and gone to heaven! I do find it hypocritical when people claim to 'love' animals but continue eating them. As Paul McCartney says 'If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would turn veggie' 😉

There are a group of vegans around here who find it appropriate to hand out leaflets to everyone, including kids, saying that cheese is made from rape and murder, complete with graphic photos. They have also been known to sit in front of the milk and meat aisles in supermarkets harassing people and not letting them pass.

Im sure there are lots of lovely ones who truly (and quietly) care, but equally there are lots of activists who piss everyone off as well, and those are the ones we hear about.

Meatcabbage · 12/07/2026 14:43

To be fair, vegans usually love animals and don't want to see people eating them, knowing full well they've likely been reared in awful conditions and then been gassed, electrocuted, bolted through the brain or worse, had their throats slit fully conscious just for a sandwich. Especially when there's easily available alternatives. So I kinda get it. Like, if it were cats or dogs going through this hell, most people would be like "hey, have you considered eating an apple or some pasta instead?" but because it's a pig or a cow or a chicken, people don't think it matters. It's pretty hypocritical when you think about it.

Quorn was absolutely available in the 90s! It was only burgers & sausages back then, then came the mince but yes it definitely existed. It was launched in 1985!

Congratulations.

I'm vegan and don't really talk about it unless someone asks. Firstly because I'm aware people find it irritating. And secondly because I find anyone who constantly announces the reasoning behind their food choices slightly ridiculous. It's so prevalent I'm in no doubt that plenty of the anti vegans on this thread do it and can't see the double standards. So how about i don't tell you I'm vegan, and you don't tell me you're avoiding UPFs, giving up sugar, low carbing, calorie counting, slimming worlding, yada yada yada.

Oh fuck yes.

far worse are the dieters. Constantly talking about how much they need to lose, they need to go to the gym to make up for eating, can’t have a treat because they’re “being good”. Asking each other what they have for lunch and comparing carbs or protein, or discussing why they have to have a salad because they had a takeaway at the weekend.

we have a couple at work and I’m at the point of requesting to wfh the days they’re in as it fucks me off so much. It makes me really conscious of what I eat in the office and I absolutely don’t want them dragging me into it.

i’d rather have a militant vegan tbh. At least their virtue signalling is based on ethics rather than self deprivation.

HangingOver · 12/07/2026 13:45

I find them a bit meh

We're devastated 🤣

Rubyupbeat · 12/07/2026 13:29

You are generalising vegans. There are so many groups I would not touch with a barge pole, fanatics, rejoicing when a hunts woman died from a fall from her horse . I hate hunting but would not be happy with that. Turning tgeir backs on family members as they still eat meat etc .....But the majority of vegans are normal everyday folk, we are vegan, but other than close friends and family, no-one knows. It's just our lifestyle.

I know a vet who inspects chicken breeding farms for animal welfare standards. He said the problem with free range chickens is that they have plenty of space to go outside but they all choose to stay in the tiny hut squashed up next to each other 🤣 So the farmers pay for all this land and none of them bloody using it. But they’re choosing to do it and that’s the main thing!

Stockholm syndrome.

Minidollop · 12/07/2026 13:17

IsYourTableClothed · 11/07/2026 13:37

There's only one thing worse than an anti-vegan, and that's an anti-vegan who won't shut up about it. Jesus, get a grip. There's nothing to oppose. We just refrain from killing animals. Can you not cope with that?

This!

The only time I talk about my choices are when others around me bring it up - either out of interest, or perhaps because they feel bad that they still eat meat? One particular friend always loudly announces that I’m the awkward one, then proceeds to modify their food order to remove the things they don’t like!

Yeah I’ve done a little activism, wouldn’t you if you felt passionately about something? Just like I’ve protested about plastic in the sea, rights for adoptive parents, and better support for bereaved families.

Plant based is slightly different as it’s a diet rather than a lifestyle choice, for instance those on a plant based diet might buy animal products such as leather where vegans would avoid anything that came from an animal.

Yes I know what it means, I’m just saying it’s a wholly insufferable way to refer to yourself.

OceanSafari · 12/07/2026 13:06

I could be wrong, but the way i understand it is, vegan is an entire lifestyle based on avoiding harm to animals (insects too?), including no leather, honey etc. While a plant-based diet refers to people that eat that way for a variety of reasons (health/intolerance/preference).

Miyagi99 · 12/07/2026 13:03

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 11/07/2026 13:19

I think calling oneself “plant based” has to be even more irritating surely?

I couldn't care less, I'm yet to meet a vegan who announces it.

Surely the protest was about animal/bird welfare and they happen to be vegan.

I was vegetarian early 90s for over 15 years. My food was naturally vegan because there was no Quorn or meat substitutes.

I don't recall annoying anbody, but I think if I came across you, that you'd annoy me regardless of views.

There’s extremist twats in all walks of life.

edited because I realised this might be taken wrongly!
I don’t mean all vegans are extremist twats!! Ones who hand out inappropriate leaflets to children obviously are, or go on and on and try and convert you are.

Exactly this! If I had to group people together it would be twats and not twats. Know lots of cool vegans, also know some twat vegans 🤷‍♀️

Do you know how low the bar is for free range? It’s not chickens outside in lots of space like on the happy eggs adverts. In reality they have very little space and many won’t see outside.
