Vegans

I find them a bit meh. I'm happy for them to do their own thing if they leave me alone. I think this is overstepping. Do vegans not have pets? After all, keeping pets is just forcing animals to live and be controlled by humans.

I'm vegan and I'm of the opinion that there are some of us that damage change with their aggressive all or nothing attitude.

Let's face it, none of us are truly happy with the way most meat and dairy is produced, but there is so much hatred from each side that no one talks about it, they just shout.

When I first went vegan I had so much push back, 10 years later most of my friends have made the choice to switch to at least one vegan alternative in their weekly shop simply because they've enjoyed it when I've made it for them, I think that's really cool, they get excited when they find something they like and share it with me. I've never told them I think they're wrong for eating animal products because I'm not living their life.

I get why vegans are passionate about animal welfare and the environment, but screaming at people about it isn't going to make anyone listen, campaigning for a road not to be called pork pie way and vegan way instead when it's being built in a place famous for pork pies does nothing but make people think we're all extreme nut jobs.

What do you think about the argument that actually the majority of these animals would never have existed if it wasn’t for farming? They would have just become extinct. We are animals too at the end of the day and at the top of the food chain - it is what it is. I understand wanting to eat high welfare meat but I genuinely don’t see what the big deal is about eating a free range egg, or a chicken that has had its life ended humanely. They don’t have any concept of death or tomorrow so it’s not like they sit around brooding about it and having an existential crisis.

Thanks for that. Some very thought-provoking points which I haven't heard before. We are doing them a favour by ensuring these meat/produce machines don't go extinct and then killing them to eat a percentage of their bodies. Certainly got me thinking. I think I'll eat a chicken tonight and the egg it laid before its life was ended humanely tomorrow morning. I've come to realise, it's what the chicken would have wanted. Thanks for your insight.

Fussy ? That’s so rude judging people’s ethical choices

That’s fine you can think it’s rude - to me it IS fussy. It is extremely privileged to be able to make such decisions about what you will or won’t eat. It’s also tiresome to have to cater for or consider when feeding groups of people in just the same way as when you get someone with a whole great big long list of things they don’t like eating. It’s fussiness.

@CarbootJunction I’m vegan. I definitely don’t have an eating disorder. I love my food, just don’t like animals dying for it.

They found that people treated them with derision so had to try using another term. They are introverted people and do not want to debate it or have to explain them selves.

I would just go with “fussy”

Megifer · 11/07/2026 13:46

Yes actual vegans are against pet ownership as the animal is prevented from exercising their own free will (fed when human says, walked when human says etc)

If they have a pet they are 'just' following a plant based diet and/or some elements of veganism.

redboxer321 · 11/07/2026 13:44

Whoever wrote the headline for that piece on the Beeb should be out of a job. And the same goes for the writer and whoever else was involved in editing the intro paragraph. The rest of the article goes on to show that two animal rights groups put in a perfectly reasonable request and that their concerns were listened to.

Still fucking preachy vegans spoiling everyone's fun reads so much better to some I suppose.

CrowsInMyGarden · 11/07/2026 13:42

I’ve been vegan since I was 11 in 1973 and don’t go on about it. People I work with/neighbours probably have no idea. I did express concern about our local village fete having a donkey derby and dog show today as it’s too hot so it’s going ahead without the animals

Kokonimater · 11/07/2026 13:40

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 11/07/2026 13:19

I think calling oneself “plant based” has to be even more irritating surely?

IsYourTableClothed · 11/07/2026 13:37

There's only one thing worse than an anti-vegan, and that's an anti-vegan who won't shut up about it. Jesus, get a grip. There's nothing to oppose. We just refrain from killing animals. Can you not cope with that?

You could say that about any diet that excludes entire food groups.

having worked with a lot of dancers in the 90’s vegetarianism, veganism, low carb, low fat etc, all code for “I have a valid reason not to eat these foods and cut my calories”.

veganism can be much healthier than keto, for example. but we don’t automatically say keto is an eating disorder.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/07/2026 13:37

I cant understand why sheep....sorry people all get so hysterical about vegans. They arent child abusers. They just want animals to be respected and not abused or used as play things. Perfectly reasonable.
I have lots of vegan friends. They are nice people. I dont have the discipline. I am an occasionally lapsing vegetarian.

Onefairfish · 11/07/2026 13:36

Whenever someone describes themselves as ‘plant based’ I can’t help wondering how much of their DNA is sprouts.

UprightCitizensBrigade · 11/07/2026 13:34

I am vegan because of a metabolic disease I have. I dont talk about it to anyone irl unless there is no other choice because then it inevitably leads to having to explain the disease. I don't understand the hatred towards vegans though?

IsYourTableClothed · 11/07/2026 13:32

Bjorkdidit · 11/07/2026 13:27

I'm not vegan but I'm concerned about the welfare of birds of prey kept like that. Carted around, chained up and pestered by endless people, must be unsettling or even terrifying for them.

Likewise cat cafes. Animals do not exist to provide entertainment.

Yeah, chickens too, crammed into those huge slaughterhouse trucks in crates. It's really, really sad.

MsGreying · 11/07/2026 13:28

What did you have for Christmas Dinner?

Melon starter with other fruits, M&S vegan roast (like a turkey breast joint), roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, sprouts & red cabbage, then a vegan chocolate torte thing from M&S. I prepped all the veg & red cabbage so I did do some of it from scratch. The whole lot only took 45 mins to cook, so saved a fortune in electricity too!

IsYourTableClothed · 11/07/2026 13:31

Vegans oppose animal exploitation and imprisonment, so no, we don't agree with pet "ownership", particularly not breeding animals.

So annoying, isn't it? Why can't we all just kill in peace!

HRTQueen · 11/07/2026 13:30

AlgaeDreams · 11/07/2026 13:05

I couldn't care less, I'm yet to meet a vegan who announces it.

Surely the protest was about animal/bird welfare and they happen to be vegan.

I was vegetarian early 90s for over 15 years. My food was naturally vegan because there was no Quorn or meat substitutes.

I don't recall annoying anbody, but I think if I came across you, that you'd annoy me regardless of views.

Edited

I was vegetarian for a few years in the 90’s I certainly wasn’t vegan as still ate diary and eggs and honey

i often won’t eat meat or fish for a few weeks but never substitute it with pretend meat you don’t need these to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet it just makes it more varied

I have family members who are plant based. They don’t talk about it or act remotely superior. It’s a private thing that matters to them. They care deeply about how animals are farmed. And live their life with as much integrity to their beliefs as possible. They did have a rescue cat that was found frozen in snow as a kitten and had life long breathing problems. They went without themselves to pay for vet bills. The cat lived for 15 years on special diet and an inhaler. Don’t judge. Many vegans are quiet and private about it.
they are good people. I wish I could be so disciplined.

thank you for this.
I have been vegetarian for 46 years and vegan for 1. I went vegan after my daughter convinced me that the dairy industry is as bad as the meat industry. I don’t act dismissively or immaturely, but I do talk about factory farming when asked.

DD1 is a vegan. She was never a meat fan so when she went to uni became vegetarian and then realised that she was lactose intolerant so veganism was just another step.

She never tries to impose her views on the rest of us when she’s home. Due to her fondness for travel, she doesn’t have any pets either. When she became a vegan I was worried about what she would eat when she came home, but it has not been an issue. At Christmas, we decided to have an entirely vegan meal (bought from M&S) and it was cheap and delicious. Our experience with her and her BF is that it is no big deal.

They’re generally a pretty insufferable bunch. The thing that particulate irks me is when they post their food on social media and have to make it clear it is a #vegan cheese board or whatever. Side note, vegan cheese is vile.

Thankfully it’s on the decline.

The problem is, if we post a picture and just say “cheese board” everyone piles on with “i thought you were vegan” but if we say “vegan cheese board” they complain we’re shoving it down their throats. Can’t win. What are we supposed to do just never talk about or share pics of food we enjoy?
