Vegans

I find them a bit meh. I'm happy for them to do their own thing if they leave me alone. I think this is overstepping. Do vegans not have pets? After all, keeping pets is just forcing animals to live and be controlled by humans.

I think calling oneself “plant based” has to be even more irritating surely?

Agree. They are made of meat, like the rest of us.

Their diet, on the other hand...

Justaquestionplease · 11/07/2026 15:37

It still makes no sense that your diet was more vegan than vegetarian because purely vegan meat substitutes didn't exist.

If you'd have said my diet was more vegan because I don't like eggs or am lactose intolerant we would have understood

Edited

I don't know why people think vegans are hard work 🙄

Pass me a burger.

My apologies - lactose intolerant and I've never really liked eggs in any form.

Is everybody happy now? Knicker elastic untwisted?

Why are you so aggressive? I have no axe to grind against vegans.

But you said this....

I was vegetarian early 90s for over 15 years. My food was naturally vegan because there was no Quorn or meat substitutes

Quorn and meat substitutes are vegan aren't they? Why would the fact they weren't around mean your diet was more vegan than vegetarian. Why did their absence make you less likely to eat eggs or dairy. I don't care what you eat or don't eat.. it just makes no logical/linguistic sense.

MrsKeats · 11/07/2026 15:35

Are we supposed to make literal eagles vegan now?My eyes rolled so much they are in the back of my head.
Absolutely ridiculous.

VoteForCountBinface · 11/07/2026 15:35

'We should all strive to be vegan or veggie.'
I don't. I think we should all strive to eat with more thought for the planet.
Good quality meat every now and then is fine, should you choose to eat it.
I choose not to.

Coconutter24 · 11/07/2026 15:34

Malbecfan · 11/07/2026 15:01

She used to eat cheese before becoming intolerant to lactose, eggs and honey. Now she chooses not to. It’s her choice. She is pretty healthy and runs regularly as far as marathons, so it’s not doing her any harm. Live and let live.

Inner choice and aslong as she’s happy that’s the main thing, my point was she doesn’t sound like she’s a vegan for the usual reason a vegan is a vegan

I'm not aggressive, I'm tired. Quorn used to contain some egg derivative, no idea now.

And I don't care what you think.

Again, I would politely want to disagree. That might be your definition of vegan, but there isn't a single vegan authority dictating correct vegan beliefs. Opposing exploitation of animals is a common theme, but equating that to opposing pet ownership isn't in either a dictionary definition not the vegan society's definition.

I don't have a horse in the race, I'm not vegan, but I am a vegetarian who's spent years putting up with seemingly endless "you're doing it wrong if..." comments. I just think we should accept the right of individuals to decide on the nuances of their own moral stance.

It is the vegan society’s definition:

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

I don’t have a horse in the race either… as a vegan, we’re against that (sorry, I couldn’t resist)

Definition of veganism

What is a vegan and vegan food? What does veganism mean?

I couldn't care less, I'm yet to meet a vegan who announces it.

Surely the protest was about animal/bird welfare and they happen to be vegan.

I was vegetarian early 90s for over 15 years. My food was naturally vegan because there was no Quorn or meat substitutes.

I don't recall annoying anbody, but I think if I came across you, that you'd annoy me regardless of views.

That doesn't make any sense at all.

And if you read my subsequent post...

Generally.

I don't care.

I expect you are one of those people who has to pile on saying you can’t live without cheese or bacon 😴

Or someone claiming to be an animal lover - when what you mean is cats and dogs but not cows and pigs.

Gloriia · 11/07/2026 15:30

We should all strive to be vegan or veggie. Eating animals is not ok. I don't preach but I do judge those shoving pork pies or bacon butties in their faces.

Concern with the welfare of birds being used for entertainment is not the same as having a rescue pet.

AlgaeDreams · 11/07/2026 15:28

Justaquestionplease · 11/07/2026 15:24

No. You said you were naturally vegan because there were no meat style substitutes. That makes no sense. If you were just vegetarian then why couldn't you eat eggs or cheese

Generally.

I don't care.

Screamingabdabz · 11/07/2026 14:43

I don’t think you really know what veganism is. It’s not about meat substitutes.

Okay, one more time...

No I don't know what veganism is about because I don't want to be one. I generally ate vegan food, still do now and I couldn't give a shit about anybody's thougts on me having a steak.

Lemonyyy · 11/07/2026 15:26

I am a vegetarian and I have a lot of friends, colleagues, acquaintances who are vegan. The only people I know who ever bend my ear about veganism are omnivores! Vegans get whinged at for supposedly proselytising, for eating too much processed food, for eating rabbit food, for being superior, I've literally never encountered any of it. Just some supremely defensive meat eaters!

Stompythedinosaur · 11/07/2026 15:24

4Lightz · 11/07/2026 14:39

Hey thanks for your response.
Just to clarify (not having a go, I know it can be a contentious topic), vegan is a moral stance against animal exploitation so it does includes pet ownership, clothing, horse racing, animal testing on cosmetics etc.
Someone who doesn’t eat animal products for whatever reason is following a plant-based diet.
so - that is to say, all vegans eat plant-based diets, but not all people on a plant-based diet are vegan.

Again, I would politely want to disagree. That might be your definition of vegan, but there isn't a single vegan authority dictating correct vegan beliefs. Generally speaking I'd make curries, chillis - anything rice based with vegetables.

I didn't live off pizzas and cheese sandwiches.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough for you.

No. You said you were naturally vegan because there were no meat style substitutes. That makes no sense. If you were just vegetarian then why couldn't you eat eggs or cheese

I wondered this too ..that post made zero sense

I've just addressed it.

I was thinking back to foods I ate. It was a vegetable based diet then. Plenty of pulses and rice.

I should have clarified that, that was my diet. Naturally was the wrong word - generally would have been better.

I was vegetarian early 90s for over 15 years. My food was naturally vegan because there was no Quorn or meat substitutes

how does that work? Vegetarians aren’t “naturally vegan” if they don’t eat meat substitutes, they are vegan if they don’t eat dairy, eggs or other animal products.

i am vegetarian and don’t like quorn or meat substitutes so don’t eat them. That doesn’t make me vegan because I eat cheese and eggs….

@4Lightz
Just a hypothetical. Would you say that adopting a dog from, for example, DogsTrust could be done by a vegan? You'd be exploiting it by keeping a sentient animal as a pet but DT uses dogs in its care to raise money which is a bigger exploitation imo. Could you still be classed as a vegan if you followed all the other vegan rules but adopted a dog from a shelter especially a long stay resident that no one else wanted? Just interested, nothing more.

I’m a vegan but we take in stray/injured/in need animals. Some we help nurse back to health and they go onto other homes and some stay with us. We’ve had everything over the years from cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens, pigs, sheep, horses, also injured wildlife like hedgehogs.

Its a difficult issue for me because we have to feed some non vegan food, but my view is that as humans we have fucked the planet up for animals, so I do what I feel is best, which is me being vegan and the animals having the food they need. I would never buy a pet, I’m against most deliberate breeding. Most dog breeders make me sick. We have a dog with us at the moment who has been dumped after she is no longer useful for breeding. I dread to think how many litters she has had. She is a mess physically, she is so anxious and it will take a lot to get her back to full health.

Having a rescue is definitely preferable but its still having an animal living in 'captivity' so is against vegan principles really.
