I know there have probably been other threads asking this, but really .... why?

Why would you say he is a "man of the people?"'(Public school educated stockbroker / multi millionaire)

Genuinely, what appeals about him?

If you voted Brexit, have you forgotten that he resigned from public office that day after his Leave campaign won?

It's an anonymous forum, so please be honest.

IMe he appeals to contrarian personalities- people who like to shock, argue and wind up others. Everyone I know that likes him loves telling you this in the hope of getting into a row.

Yes, I think this is probably true.

Come off it @lightseeker 'oh can you pretty please explain WHY you support Nigel Farage. PWEEEEZE.' 🙏

No-one is going to do that on here, because all will happen is that they will be ridiculed and mocked, and called a thick, racist, piece of gammon.

I am not a Farage fan by the way but I know how these threads go!!!

So what though? It's an anonymous forum. People can be honest. This is the whole point.

If I asked why people support other politicians, I think people would be able to say. Regardless of whether or not they think anyone would agree with them.

Yes, but even among people who didn't finish school or have no qualifications whatsoever, do they genuinely think, "Oh look I've got no job because ... the boats." As opposed to looking at their own backgrounds.

I think it can be quite difficult for people to unpick why their life is the way it is, to recognise generational poverty, that they never had opportunities, that we live in a deeply unequal society. It's so much easier to blame it all on immigrants.

5128gap · 10/07/2026 21:03

When people are interviewed they always tend to speak about how bad things are in their town, run down high streets, plus everything being expensive, paying too much tax "and what for?"
They then say they think the government are doing a terrible job and not listening to people. That the "last lot were just as bad", so might as well give someone else a chance.
Sometimes they say they don't agree with "all these people on the boats"
I've never heard anyone speak about Farage's policies or how they think he will improve things. Just the problems they see and a hope/belief Farage will fix them.

So by stopping the boats people think their lives are going to suddenly get better? They’re going to have a shock. So many people have no idea whatsoever of the size and complexity of the problems the UK (and many other countries) have. There’s no quick and easy fixes, despite what Farage says

Yes, but people need hope and he gives the hope. The other parties do not because they don't care about them.

Of course, Farage doesn't care about them either, but he pretends to and says what they want to hear. The other parties do not.

missmollygreen · 10/07/2026 20:49

lightseeker · 10/07/2026 20:01

Why would people in Clacton be voting for him though. It can't just be 'immigration.' What is the appeal?

Because he is the only politician who tells them what they want to hear.
And I say that NOT as a reform supporter.

Nigel has been able to say whatever he wants, because he has never had to back it up. I hate to think what will happen if he gets in. I think it will be brexit all over again.

Because the thread isn’t a genuine attempt to find out why, it’s so people can ask supporters of farage why they are so stupid and tell them why they are wrong.

im not one by the way, but I can see why anyone who is would see the bloody obvious bear trap

100% correct.

Well, if anyone is going to do it, it will be him. But you are right, that he probably won't be able to, but people need to have hope otherwise they have nothing.

I think it’s quite telling that you asked Farage voters if they would mind explaining why they support him but you have only had people speculating as to why people might vote for him. I know it’s early days for this thread and I know the Mumsnet cohort is typically less right-wing but it’s interesting that you can’t actually get an answer to your actual question.
I think Reform provide easy answers to complex questions. For those members of society who are struggling, they suggest scapegoats to blame and a sense of reassurance that your misfortunes are not your own responsibility- “immigrants and corrupt, substandard politicians have doomed you to a life of poverty”, when the reality is multi-layered, complex and very difficult to fix and to imply otherwise is dishonest and divisive.

But why do you think it will be him who stops the boats? Whst has he done (not said) to make you believe this?

I don't think that he will be able to do it because of the legal challenges, but he has said that he will and people need hope, so they vote for him

Who else are the going to vote for? The Tories and Labour have both proved that they can't do it.

Yes I totally agree. I just would have thought after 10 years of Farage, people wouod have seen through the shtick by now. Especially as they will invariably be worse off following Brexit.

I sadly have got people that I know wouldn’t describe them as friends, but I know them.
They do not want more black people in the country. And it’s as simple as that.
I don’t think we can overcomplicate this argument

Nearly a quarter of people in Clacton have no qualifications whatsoever and it's one of the most deprived areas of the country. No surprise that's where Farage chose to stand, easy pickings to convince them all their problems are down to the boat people.

Because he has said that he will stop the boats. He is the only one they trust to do it.

Why would they care if he is public school stockbroker? They just want someone to stop the boats and they trust that he will do it.

People should care because he sells himself as a man of the people, standing in a pub having a pint. And people fall for it. They believe a multi millionaire who wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, is the same as them.

In 2016, Farage appealed to those who felt dispossessed and gave them something to blame - 'immigrants.'

But 10 years later, surely they can see through him now? He doesn't sound like his voting core, look like them or dress like them. He's a public school stockbroker turned business man grifter extraordinaire in a tweed jacket. What do they relate to in him?

I’m supporting Binface but I think you can find out all you need to know from Farage’s YouTube videos, instead of asking posters to put their heads above the parapet to be ripped to shreds by the left majority on MN some of whom quite often say Reform voters are thick racists. Go and look at his real(?) thoughts about politics and see what he is about. He’s not getting votes by just posing with a pint, there’s more to it.
The “would you change your Brexit vote?” thread is quite enlightening too. I learned a lot.

Edited

Thanks for voting Binface. Are you in Clacton constituency? Do you think many will vote with you? What's your sense?
