I’m on a train back from London after a few days break and the whole place seemed to smell of BO, I know it’s very hot and sticky but it’s vile.

sitting on this train there’s been several people sitting/standing beside us who have been so smelly they’ve made me feel literally sick. I don’t know how hard it is to wash once a day and stick deodorant on?
There was one man, well dressed stand beside me whilst I was sitting and I could smell what I thought was poo off him like a not wiping/festering in the heat situation. Then there’s the BO/stale fags/stale beer delight we had on the way down.

I know I’m tired and perimenopausal but subjecting other people to your smelly body is horrible IMO

Yes. Some people seem to have very little input with their own personal hygiene. 🤮

Netcurtainnelly · 10/07/2026 15:23

What about people moaning and needing a support thread 😱🤔

igelkott2026 · 10/07/2026 14:59

I can recommend Salt of the Earth deo - it comes in a roll-on and a spray form and my top didn't smell yesterday despite going for a walk in the morning and sitting in it all day at home. I think you can get it from Holland & Barrett among other places.

DjokovicsTowel · 09/07/2026 18:05

I work afternoons or evenings. The other day I showered and changed underwear before work. 2 hours in and I could smell myself.

Last thing I want to do after a long, hot day is fanny around getting changed again. I just want to get home and shower. We don't have the chance to just take a shower whenever we feel like it at work (I really doubt most places do have showers) either

YABU.

The worst thing about this weather is that it is a signifier of global heating.

The second worst thing is smelly people.

Whoever mentioned the Central Line was correct 😀 maybe it’s because I’ve not visited London in many years having lived there for years that I have forgotten the joy of public transport in July.

There totally is a difference between fresh sweat and that sweat/dirt/shit smell. Those fuzzy seats don’t really help withdrawn

Ugh yes the tube is awful. I was in London a week ago and deliberately planned my routes around the Circle, Hammersmith and Met lines rather than the Central (also wanted to avoid the Picadilly, Northern and Bakerloo).

Even the night before I went down there I was sure I could smell in my sleep that heavy, dry, too-hot electrical smell of the Tube! It's unlike any other subway system I've ever encountered - anywhere.

So glad I came home the same day, and on a late train which wasn't quite so rammed as usual. London is uncomfortable in the heat: I don't think I could stand living there full-time.

I'd never go to London at any time of year without wipes, change of top and two changes of underwear. I can visit any other city in the UK but when I return from London I always feel dirtier and smellier than if I've been anywhere else.

What's the adult word? Pongy? 😎

I was going to ask the same? What's wrong with smelly? Should we be saying maloderous?

I felt the same yesterday. I was carrying a fresh top to change into before boarding transport home - surely a simple solution for most people?

basiically · 08/07/2026 18:31

For me anytime of the year its the over smell of deodrant and perfumes, on men or women.

Agree about (strong) perfume too, it's horrible. And even worse when mixed with BO!

igelkott2026 · 09/07/2026 16:43

Not BO so much but men insist on taking their shirts off in a confined space and then their hot flesh smells like - well, meat. Bleugh. I feel for vegetarians!

Though last weekend I was in a cafe with my mum and the guy at the next table smelled. I think some men refuse to wear anti-perspirant because it is somehow unmanly.

Runssometimes · 09/07/2026 16:40

I think excess deaths is the worst thing about the hot weather, personally. Perhaps you could carry a nosegay or similar device to protect your sensibilities.

Comeonelieen · 09/07/2026 16:13

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell very much

Thing is if you start sweating at 8-9am then by 4-5pm it’s not fresh sweat is it?

Myskyscolour · 09/07/2026 12:44

People who smell at 8am on the Tube (into London, so not likely to be shift workers on their way home!)
How hard is it to put on clean clothes daily in a heatwave? And to shower in the morning?

One of the problems is that people are so overdressed in this heat. Your bound to see some people in Winter wear which I can't understand. Jeans, jumpers, bots have no place in this weather

When you were at school you were bought up winter uniform and summer uniform . Summer dresses in Summer and Shorts.
It's all you need in hot weather.
If you went abroad too you wouldn't dream of packing winter wear. It dosent make sense. It's now as hot or hotter than abroad and some people are still in their winter clothing .

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell very much.

The rank fusty B.O is people who don’t shower every day.

Serious medical issues aside, there’s no excuse for it. Even a sink wash is better than nothing! A lot of people just can’t be bothered. I’ve seen it a lot on MN over the years, people don’t wash daily but say they smell ‘fine’. I’m sure most of them don’t smell fine at all!

There are always people who excuse this. Maybe they have MH issues, maybe they cannot afford to have a shower every day. The vast majority of people who smell are not cleaning themselves properly.

I agree there are plenty of them around. That fusty smell that clings onto their clothes.

Mimilamore · 09/07/2026 11:04

On a train as I type, a man got on and sat across the aisle, huge waft of BO and now he has added to the mix by taking off his trainers and peeling his socks back 🫣 Trying not to breath too deeply and off at next stop thank fully!

aliasfrog · 09/07/2026 11:00

I think the main problem is that most clothes are made of polyester nowadays. The sweat bacteria just gets trapped between the fibres and is hard to wash out, plus the fabric doesn't breathe so makes you sweat more.

I completely agree!

Being smelly through not washing and not wearing clean clothes is antisocial. It’s disgusting.

Smelly people always seem to think they’re brilliant too! Has anyone else noticed that?

@walkingmywayand @Electricsausages thanks for the recommendations. I’ll have a look.

My son was on the tube yesterday and said there was a fug of BO 🤢. I reckon it’s partly because so many people have eschewed traditional anti-perspirant deodorants for ‘natural’ ones that frankly, don’t cut the mustard.

Edited

I use a natural deodorant (Fussy) and it works fine. They do work for many. But obviously we are all different and what works for some won’t work for others.

Comeonelieen · 09/07/2026 09:01

Any1ForTennis · 08/07/2026 17:54

I pull the neck of my tshirt up and cover my nose, I don't care if the person gets embarrassed by me making it obvious.

Spraying perfume on my tshirt as I leave the house helps!

If you’re on public transport I imagine you’re embarrassing everyone who is anywhere near you.

beadystar · 08/07/2026 21:05

There’s a difference between fresh sweat on someone who’s washed and put on clean clothes in the recent past and stale BO that’s gone rancid. I had to step away from a man on my train first thing this morning as he was just foul. God knows how his office coped with him. Unusually though, I’ve noticed younger girls being stinky too, and I do think the natural deodorant thing is to blame. I tried one a while ago and it just didn’t work.
