AIBU to still feel unsafe and want to tell someone?

My husband has done some things to me /around me in recent years that weren't great. Nothing really terrible - not hitting or SA - but stuff that has made me definitely a bit scared of him.

It's been well over a year since he's done anything like that.

I just have two questions I thought maybe someone on here would have experience of this stuff and could answer.

One is, when did you find that you felt safe and comfortable around your husband again? Is it normal that I don't? Every time he swears or slams a door or something I get scared, and then scared he'll notice I'm scared, because he would get annoyed by that because he just wants us to move on from the stuff that happened. The world cup is stressing me out because he keeps jolting out of his chair and shouting and swearing at the TV!

The other question is, is it really vindictive that I want to tell someone in real life? I obviously won't. He'd be so hurt and really angry, because it's such an injustice to who he is in general. But there was total secrecy in my family about my dad's additions and abuses and I think because of that, having to not tell anyone about the stuff my husband has done is making me feel worse, like as if it's all happening again even though it's not.

Just to pre-empt some stuff that might come up

  • I have posted about this stuff before. I spoke to Women's Aid because of replies. I don't mind my other posts being referred to but please don't "catch me out" with stuff from them. Mumsnet is the only place I can have these "conversations" and I'm not trying to be defensive or in denial or anything like that.
  • I am getting therapy for cPTSD which I have from other stuff mostly childhood stuff.
  • I haven't gone into detail about what he did because I don't think it's relevant but I will if it is.
  • I won't be leaving him. I can't even if I wanted to but I don't want to.

I didn't put a poll as it's not really an either/ or but just - is this all normal and will pass, or am I damaging my relationship by not moving on from it?

@Butsometimesnot yes, most of the scars on my arms. I thought I'd mentioned that already here but maybe another thread. I've done it my whole life since I was about 12 I think. I know it's not good but not really that easy to stop.

Is that related to your family? Are they aware of the cause? Have you ever sought therapy?

Evening everyone.

We’re so sorry to hear that you’re feeling like this, OP. We don't know if it will be of any help but we wanted to share Mind's information with you - it has practical tips on what you can do when you feel like this and where to get urgent help. Maybe take a look and see if there’s anything which might be helpful right now. And if not, perhaps it might be of use to someone else reading, even. We hope posting here has been of some help and comfort anyway. All the best.

You sound very very unhappy and have been even since a child. I don’t know what to advise as the most obvious…. Is a non starter

This is above my pay grade. These communities just sound hellish… for the women. Good luck Op

It sounds as though your family are starting to heal. Sunlight is good disinfectant. Being honest about what’s happening and what’s happened will be good.

I feel “unsafe” when i walk past the travellers site near where I live, so I imagine actually
being a part of it and married to a traveller would absolutely make me feel “unsafe” (understatement)

Sorry to hear you feel unsafe. I'm not married to a traveller and I don't feel unsafe among my own people.

Just perfectly timed to prove the point we’d been making! I’m amazed you haven’t given up on asking for help here tbh.

Sorry that I expect I'm really dim to be asking - who are your own people? Apparently it's relevant but I don't follow who these people are.

A group that have similarities with Travellers but aren’t travellers. There are quite a few.

Think religious groups, Carnies, crime families… all sorts. Closed groups with codes of behaviour that aren’t necessarily the same as the average UK family. Royalty also fits the bill 😅

Abitofalark · 22/09/2026 15:34

It's difficult to understand when you say you cannot leave because of a specific culture or people but decline to say what culture and then later say, well it doesn't matter what culture because it's universal anyway.

For the reader it's like trying to look at a view through a heavily misted window and at the same time expected to know what the view consists of, how to take account of its various features and how to make informed comment on it.

As you fear adverse reactions or comment, it would seem easier to post for advice in your own context and local area, not least for the sense of recognition, where you don't have to explain or obscure the circumstances and cultural assumptions because they will be known and understood and at least some will be able to relate and advise based on relevant knowledge or experience.
I read this update today thinking it was about a completely different cultural group as I was trying to interpret and make sense of it.

Puffinsandcoffee · 22/09/2026 16:57

Yeah, I am really uncomfortable spelling it out' I'm afraid if I spell out what I am it'll be obvious who I am to anyone reading who knows me (I know it's unlikely but it's a scary thought) And the things I've said about my community... It would be really bad for me.

I haven't said it's universal. I've said what the relevant features are: very strict moral codes, the men are in charge, historicaly very violent and still violent by "normal" standards. Closed. Minority, but white. Big issues with addiction and mental illness but a lot of shame and secrecy about that. and it's who I am and I'm entirely proud of that.. It's not universal, but those are the relevant specifics.

I can't ask for help locally IRL.If my husband or my family got wind of me going to what like a support group for abused women? I know one of our women who went to a womens refuge for a while. I saw the aftermath. It did her no good at all.

But whatever. I've already said Irish traveller is a very good guess . i didn't want everything to become about that because I'm "outside" in many ways or at least was, though less so now. And my husband is white British. Just a totally normal man with a totally normal family.

Actually, she has explained before that her husband is white British and he is not part of her minority community/heritage.

I know, I was talking about the poster OP responded to. We had just been saying how much irrational bias there was if OP were to even suggest she could be from a travelling community and up pops a poster full of bias who obviously hasn’t read the posts at all.

Oops sorry - I had totally misunderstood your post 🤦‍♀️
I realise what you were saying now, and yes I agree with you about the bias.

It’s fine I can see how it could have seemed like I was saying something else out of context.

Dery · 22/09/2026 23:53

@Puffinsandcoffee - you don’t need to say more about your background. You have made the general social considerations and parameters in which you’re operating very clear. I’m not sure all posters are aware of the function that allows them just to view all your posts so they don’t necessarily get properly caught up on what you have shared.

I think since she updated, there have been people seeing it pop up on the trending list and then they’re just reading the OP and posting, as lots of people do that. And then people only half-reading it, as some people do that too!

Your husband has battered bathroom door with you hiding behind it. Your cousin is a wife beater.

and you don’t feel unsafe?

I think the point is - if the Op clarifies from outset that from travelling community - posters will know to save their breath from suggesting that she leaves her abusive husband because never ever going to happen

Edited

It’s right there in the OP: don’t say to leave him as she can’t and she doesn’t want to. It really doesn’t require any more information than that.

Her background might explain her tolerance of what most would call abuse, but so would any other violent/abusive family background which people can have grown up in from any community on earth.
