Would you ask them to turn it down? Exhausted

Detached properties, not massively close. Next door playing v v loud music, can hear the beat mostly. Also can hear lots of chatter. They’re outside. We get on with neighbours but not friends as such. We didn’t know they were having some sort of do but there’s a few cars outside so they must be.

I know they’re just having fun but I literally can’t sleep. Have to be up in 6 hours. Is it worth texting to ask them to turn it down? I know they’ll think I’m a bloody pain. Would you ask?

So what happened??

Booboobagins · 05/07/2026 07:35

Call the council out of hours and report it. Env health officers should attend and tell them to come inside. You can do this anonymously. I had the same prob, but now I don't.

Friendlygingercat · 05/07/2026 02:02

Just wondering whats going to happen on sunday night when crowds of people are watching the football from 1 am. Not everyone will be going to the pub and there is bound to be drinking and celebration or commiseration afterwards.

I am having that stressed feeling where you know you’ve got to be up but then literally can’t sleep… I may as well get up and clean or read or something!

I am really surprised that anyone would play music so loud at all let alone outside. I love a party but I’d be mortified if I thought my neighbours were being disturbed

Respectfully, you're probably not even on their minds if they are having a get together and have been drinking.

My neighbours do similar once a month/every other, I don't mind, it's normally all finished by midnight - and I can sleep through anything (blessed)

But just wanted to let you know, hopefully your asleep now, but it's not going to be a personal attack on you, it won't be that they don't care just probably too far gone to notice.

As a one off, I'd leave it.

I say this but I still get a bit moody when my other neighbour brings out his guitar and I'm reminded of a 3AM wake up call when it woke up my baby, 8 years ago 😂

downloadtoad · 05/07/2026 00:45

Someone else might save you the bother and ask them instead op. I think it’ll go off soon

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 05/07/2026 00:35

Crystal Palace Parade?

writergirl007 · 05/07/2026 00:27

I don't want to give away my location but currently suffering the same thing from literally a couple of streets away. It is literally the loudest rave I have ever heard.

OP - is your road abbreviated to CPP ?!

Is this an actual thing as I only ever come across it on mn. The slightest bit of a noise complaint and the instant response seems to be ‘noise cancelling earphones’. For a start I really don’t think the average person just happens to have a pair of these in the house. Plus if I did, I’d have more chance of getting some sleep laying next to a jackhammer than falling asleep with my ears plugged

I’ve worn ear plugs since I went back packing 20 odd years ago. I can’t sleep without them now! Not house cancelling headphones but foam style ear plugs. They drown out any noise perfectly, never mind that I live in a quiet neighbourhood and really don’t need them!

PenelopeJoanSterling · 04/07/2026 23:55

in another thread this is happening by one neighbour

Would you ask them to turn it down? Exhausted
PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 04/07/2026 23:53

Are they American? It's 4th July? If they're likely drunk I'd message, they won't remember in the morning!

FullLondonEye · 04/07/2026 23:51

lightreflectingonwater · 04/07/2026 23:45

I disagree. Surely it should be those who wish to be obnoxiously noisy who should live in the back of beyond.

Both, in my opinion. We do it not only so we don’t get disturbed by others but also because I don’t want to have to worry about disturbing them either.

In any case I think there is a big difference between a one off party or event and doing it on a regular basis. Even as someone who chooses to live as I described I could accept people wanting to do that occasionally. Are people really supposed to never, ever hold any kind of celebration or event in their own home? Albeit it would have been polite to give neighbours a heads up.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/07/2026 23:50

Maybe it’s a special event, special birthday? You say you aren’t massively close so they wouldn’t have told you?

im really not one to make noise and get annoyed when other people do. You say it’s never happened before. Are people no longer allowed to entertain in their own house once a year?

minipie · 04/07/2026 23:49

I’m usually on the “people should be more considerate” side on these neighbour noise threads. But honestly as this is the first time in a year and it’s 11.45pm not 3am, I think you suck it up.

People are allowed to have occasional loud parties. If was every week or even every month I’d get pretty annoyed, but once in a year… live and let live. You might want to have a party one day.

imprompchu · 04/07/2026 23:48

We had this last night for an 18th. Give it a few more minutes as ours stopped at midnight.

lightreflectingonwater · 04/07/2026 23:46

MsAmerica · 04/07/2026 23:42

Curiously, you don't mention the time. Makes a big difference if it's 11pm or 3am.

I do hate intrusive noise, but I would never complain about a single night - only about an on-going pattern. And I certainly wouldn't text.

What I've done is get up and show up at their door wearing a bathrobe. That is likely to be much more effective.

I'm guessing 11.24pm given that is when op is posting

lightreflectingonwater · 04/07/2026 23:45

FullLondonEye · 04/07/2026 23:28

If they were doing it every night then of course you should tell them. If this is a one off then I’d leave it.

Those who can’t tolerate some reasonable amount of noise from others living normal lives around them simply shouldn’t live in built up areas. If you need that kind of silence you need to look for a more isolated property.

I disagree. Surely it should be those who wish to be obnoxiously noisy who should live in the back of beyond.

I think wait until midnight and then say something. It is awkward though.

firsttimepregnanthelp · 04/07/2026 23:37

I would defo send the message - they are being selfish and inconsiderate

thehumgoesonforever · 04/07/2026 23:34

Nah, as it’s a one off I’d probably just grin and bare it and accept you might be tired the following day, I’d probably stick earphones in and listen to calm music or an audiobook and try and get at least a bit of sleep - I’m awkward and wouldn’t want to rock the boat but whenever our neighbours have been having an outdoor garden party they have let us know in advance just as a heads up even though we don’t talk often. I’d just be quietly annoyed about it lol maybe if you see them after drop a nicely worded comment about if it happens again could they let you know in advance maybe

Late night parties with very loud outdoor music isnt the norm in residential areas. Its not reasonable noise.

The house near me is several hundred metres away and the music is proper thumping outside in a garden, its really loud. Its a quiet village with detached houses on spacious plots but the sound really really carries.

FirstdatesFred · 04/07/2026 23:33

I think before midnight, on a weekend, as a one off…. Probably best to let it go personally.
if still bothering you at or after midnight then I would consider asking, and think you have a point there.

Usertt1223334 · 04/07/2026 23:33

Ahhh I don’t know what to do. I’ve drafted a message but don’t want to send it now.

They are pleasant and i think they would probably understand if i asked but it’s also clear they are very drunk. If anything the noise is getting louder.
