AIBU to ignore a colleague until work on Monday?

On a Friday I call into a supermarket local to my work and pick up lunch (for myself and others).
Today there was a queue to use the coffee machine and I ended up being 3 minutes late for work.
When I got into work I apologised for being late and my line manager said to not let it happen again and to make up the time in my lunch.
I did my 3 minutes of work and then went to take my lunch in another room.
At my finishing time I got up and left and a member of the team mentioned something about swanning in late and leaving early to which I replied I'd made my time up as I'd been told to by our manager and I didn't realise that they were now my supervisor.
He followed me to my car to try and start an argument but I kept walking got in my car and left.
He's known in the workplace to be hotheaded and very argumentative and management have had to step in/give warnings before now.
He's tried to call me twice on my personal number but not left any messages.

If he tries to start a conversation on Monday, I’d hold up your hand, talk over him in a firm voice and say ‘Do not talk to me. I’ve reported you to HR, you can save whatever it is you have to say for them. I don’t wish to have any communication with you unless it is to do with work’. And if he continues, get up and walk into HR’s office.

You pick up lunch for others in your workplace, something that is not your job, you are 3 minutes late and have to make up the time. FFS, how crap is that place. Twat of a colleague is the least of your problems.

If your supervisor is one of the people you pick up lunch for I’d stop that straight away!

Is there a legit reason the other colleague has your phone number? If not then report him to HR for stalking.

Even when you get back to work id tell him youre not discussing it as your manager has addressed it and its non of his business. All over 3 minutes!
But is there a past history or is it a one off?

Sorry have not RTFT only Op updates but leave that what’s app group and block him too!

FreyaW · 04/07/2026 12:52

That would be encouraging this behaviour.
Stop giving excuses for abusive men.

Thanks everyone
I've booked a meeting with HR for Monday and requested the CCTV
There is a lot of "banter" in my workplace but he always has to go too far or go a bit too mean but it's the first time he's ever been called out in front of the younger lads that he thinks look up to him
Also I'm definitely going to be calling him a toaster from now on!

Well done OP.

TheIdlerReturns · 04/07/2026 12:50

Of course you're not BU. Why are you even asking? If you think you're being harassed speak to management or HR. Sounds like he's got form. Why is he calling you on your personal phone? Block.

It was said in jest by line manager but I know how it looks to some people so I did my 3 minutes.
There is 0% chance he was calling to apologise if he feels he didn't get the last word
We're all in a group chat so he already had my number

Definitely ignore him. Don't have contact with him outside the workplace at all.

Also consider talking to your manager just in a "heads up, What's your advice?" type way about the colleague following you to your car, and attempting to call you outside work.

Is leaving the group chat an option?

We used to have a team group chat and have been officially told not to now as it's a data protection issue. Obviously there are no sanctions for being in group charts (though there theoretically could be if anything was shared/ discussed in it that should be confidential) but management cannot expect anyone to use group chat any more. In a previous job I worked shifts and at some point we were told that even sharing the shift plan in a group WhatsApp chat was a data protection breach.

I’d ignore him, and speak to HR first thing Monday morning. Or, if you have an email for them, email them now. That’s not on. He followed you to your car trying to intimidate you and is now continuing that behaviour in your free time. You don’t need to put up with that!

I'd leave the workplace all together if they're this uptight about 3 fucking minutes.

agree. even more so given it was because you were literally picking up food for the rest of the team!

DontBeADick11 · 04/07/2026 12:37

If your work is going to quibble over 3 mins I’d find another job. Unless you’re frequently late I guess. You know you’re not unreasonable to ignore the male colleague who’s effectively harassing you and should quite frankly be reported to HR over this instance.

Friendlygingercat · 04/07/2026 12:17

When I was a manager of a public service point i would never have asked a team member who was normally punctual to make up a few minutes on an odd occasion. We all know that stuff happens and buses can be late. I would only ask it of someone who was repeatedly late and it would be part of a quiet "talking to".

I have never forgotten the day when I had pre advised my boss that I was attending my grandmothers funeral and would be in a bit late. He had already made a tasteless remark about the funeral. I came in 20 minutes late and he told me to make up the time. I never did make it up. Instead I raised a grievance about his attitude. He got a bollocking from HIS boss.

Kim5678 · 04/07/2026 11:47

Why would you think it would be unreasonable to ignore him? I can’t think of anything

Inthezone5578 · 04/07/2026 11:41

Francestein · 04/07/2026 11:19

Screenshot call logs, refer to HR and ask that they look at CCTV from the car park. He’s trying to intimidate you and when that don’t work, it became harrassment.

Exactly this

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/07/2026 11:30

Sounds like a man who has never been told to stop. You say he has had warnings - this might tip the balance against him.

I'd be taking it up with my boss on Monday morning first thing.

paleyellowbrick · 04/07/2026 11:15

The OP says her manager was joking about the three minutes.

Whyherewego · 04/07/2026 11:15

Awful. Block him and report him to HR as he should not be either reprimanding you for any work related things as he isnot your ljne manager and he should not be contacting you unsolicited on your personal number

PashaMinaMio · 04/07/2026 11:11

Whatever you think he might be trying to contact you about, just ignore him.

You’re busy aren’t you? Just get on with your weekend. He’s nothing to you. Just a wan4er of a work colleague.
He needs to get a life.

Monty36 · 04/07/2026 11:04

This is where work and private life have unnecessarily blurred . A Group chat. Is it essential ? Really ? Years ago, before such things existed he would only have your phone number if you gave it to him. Or someone gave it to him without your permission. Now, because it is deemed normal to have the all essential group chat he has your phone number. And is bothering you outside of working hours. That should not happen.

The three minute thing was absurd. And also not right to dress you down in front of others. It clearly for him feels like a sort of green light to go ahead and be unpleasant to you.

You are not being unreasonable to ignore his calls. You are at home.
When you get to work report him for following you to your car and trying to start an argument and for the calls at home. Which are unwelcome.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 04/07/2026 10:58

You’re better than me I would have picked up that phone and probably ended up with a warning myself 😭. What a fucking weirdo he is.

GisGasGus · 04/07/2026 10:45

StormGazing · 04/07/2026 08:54

What a toaster, I’d complain if he carried on the argument Monday

I dont know if that's an autocorrect but I quite like that as an insult 😂

Definitely no need to call him back, block him until you can speak to HR on Monday

What kind of job monitors you by the minute? Is it call centre type work?
