AIBU to ignore a colleague until work on Monday?

On a Friday I call into a supermarket local to my work and pick up lunch (for myself and others).
Today there was a queue to use the coffee machine and I ended up being 3 minutes late for work.
When I got into work I apologised for being late and my line manager said to not let it happen again and to make up the time in my lunch.
I did my 3 minutes of work and then went to take my lunch in another room.
At my finishing time I got up and left and a member of the team mentioned something about swanning in late and leaving early to which I replied I'd made my time up as I'd been told to by our manager and I didn't realise that they were now my supervisor.
He followed me to my car to try and start an argument but I kept walking got in my car and left.
He's known in the workplace to be hotheaded and very argumentative and management have had to step in/give warnings before now.
He's tried to call me twice on my personal number but not left any messages.

That is pure bullying and harassment.

What kind of people are clock watchers to that extreme? Three mnutes is nothing!

Rachie1974 · 04/07/2026 14:40

I'd make sure I was in early on Monday, then if he starts anything when he gets in say something like, oh didn't realise you'd been promoted to clock monitor, and BTW was there a reason you kept calling me at the weekend, not sure why you would do that?
Hopefully in front of others and he will have to justify his behaviour.

I'd ignore the calls until Monday. If it was really work related, he could have left a voicemail or emailed you. Following you to car was way out of line. I'd keep everything professional and , if he starts again at work, let your manager deal with it.

MrsPerfect12 · 04/07/2026 14:28

I would be reporting him!

AnonyMumAuDHD · 04/07/2026 14:28

Sorry I would take a screen shot of the call log, block him and then report him to HR.

Even if he was your line manager, he had no right to follow you to your car arguing, let alone call you out of hours. It’s gross misconduct and harassment. I’d ignore him indefinitely and email HR now, frankly.

Thepeopleversuswork · 04/07/2026 14:22

Pineapplewhip · 03/07/2026 22:34

I'd leave the workplace all together if they're this uptight about 3 fucking minutes.

This. This is no way to live.

And I would report your dickhead colleague for harassment.

GreenEyesMillennial · 04/07/2026 14:20

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 03/07/2026 22:29

Did he already have your number or is that something to query with HR?

Also, 3 minutes? And you had to make up the time? Fuck that shit.

My thoughts exactly! 3 minutes late is nothing!

Okiedokie123 · 04/07/2026 14:20

I would ignore him indefinitely. And I would leave whatsapp workchats. Some people at my work are in them....... Im not! So much easier and preferable to keep work life and home life separate.

BelieveInCher · 04/07/2026 14:20

That’s awful OP. He was trying to physically intimidate you and is now harassing you on your personal number. Do not downplay this-he sounds dangerous.

CopeNorth · 04/07/2026 14:19

NormasArse · 04/07/2026 09:49

I’d just answer if he rings again- he’s taking up space in your head.

It did sound like a joke that you took badly though.

He followed me to my car to try and start an argument but I kept walking got in my car and left.

which bit of this is a joke and who took the situation badly…?

GisGasGus · 04/07/2026 14:18

godmum56 · 04/07/2026 13:41

yup. Why is a work group chat needed?

There is a group work chat where I work and it's really useful for a lot of reasons. That's pretty normal nowadays isn't it?

The problem isn't the chat it's the inappropriate workmate

lazyarse123 · 04/07/2026 14:14

I'm glad you have arranged a meeting. This kind of tosser ruins a good workplace. We had a manager in retail who tried insisting we all had WhatsApp. In the first place my phone at that time didn't support that and all my friends complained every day about him sending figures and other irrelevant nonsense. He kept telling me I had to get it and eventually I said unless the shop has burnt down or someone died I don't need contact from you outside work hours. If there's an urgent issue you can ring me. I have no patience for officious oafs of any kind.

CopeNorth · 04/07/2026 14:14

I’m sorry Op this is awful. It’s harassment to follow you to your car and try to start an argument. I’d ignore him indefinitely unless you have to deal with him in the workplace - then keep it work specific only.

you’ve done the right thing reporting to HR. Good luck

Ohdearnotthisagain · 04/07/2026 13:53

He followed you to your car and now he’s calling you…. I’m glad you have booked a meeting with HR.

Pineapplewhip · 03/07/2026 22:34

I'd leave the workplace all together if they're this uptight about 3 fucking minutes.

Problem is, this is usually a big issue in retail jobs. A minority make it a problem for the majority. You get a few people taking the piss coming in late and leaving early, or taking extended lunch breaks, and then it has a knock on effect for all other colleagues because management just clamps down on everyone.

This is where work and private life have unnecessarily blurred . A Group chat. Is it essential ? Really ? Years ago, before such things existed he would only have your phone number if you gave it to him. Or someone gave it to him without your permission. Now, because it is deemed normal to have the all essential group chat he has your phone number. And is bothering you outside of working hours. That should not happen.

The three minute thing was absurd. And also not right to dress you down in front of others. It clearly for him feels like a sort of green light to go ahead and be unpleasant to you.

You are not being unreasonable to ignore his calls. You are at home.
When you get to work report him for following you to your car and trying to start an argument and for the calls at home. Which are unwelcome.

yup. Why is a work group chat needed?

SylvanMoon · 04/07/2026 13:36

We're all in a group chat so he already had my number

Which is just one of the reasons that WhatsApp bringing in usernames is a good move.

What a knob this "colleague" is.

Abricot1983 · 04/07/2026 13:27

If the idiot colleague ( toaster) approaches you on Monday then just say that you are „choosing to step away from this conversation.“. Keep repeating if necessary and walk away if necessary

Tollington · 04/07/2026 13:24

I worked somewhere once that would dock you 45 minutes wages if you clocked in even one minute late. I left after three months

I’m not a fan of colleagues having my private number. It was once given to a manager by another colleague. This manager was not my manager. He rang me once, I didn’t answer and immediately blocked his number

MyDeftDuck · 04/07/2026 13:15

YANBU to ignore him! Not his place to reprimand anyone for lateness and following you out to the car park and confronting you could be construed to be harassment! Kick him in the nuts!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/07/2026 13:12

I’d be logging that he’d called you after to try harassing you. One for HR on Monday morning.
As for work group chat, I was invited to a WhatsApp work group and encouraged to join, I refused. You’re not obligated to join. I enjoy the peace.

shellster80 · 04/07/2026 13:11

Did he call again after the 2 times? As someone else has said he may have been calling to apologise? You’re assuming he was wanting a row but may not have been the case (hopefully!), but you’ve not told us what he said in the car park. I’d wait and see what happens Monday but I’d call him out each and every time he’s a dick

Mythoughtsalone · 04/07/2026 13:05

This sounds like a very toxic work environment. Never mind the colleague essentially stalking you, the manager's attitude is also poor. 3 minutes! And you were late as you were also getting lunch for others. Unless you love working there, I would look for a new job. In the meantime, ignore the colleague and consider lodging his behaviour with HR.

lessglittermoremud · 04/07/2026 13:00

Was his comment said in jest as well? Because at first I thought your manager was being serious when they said to make up the three minutes!
Perhaps because the level of banter a colleague may think it was ok to say something about swanning off early?
What was he saying as he followed you out to the car to try and start an argument?
It’s all sounds abit odd, perhaps he’s trying to phone you apologise given he’s already had warning about being hot tempered but he’s crossing a line by contacting you at home.

FreyaW · 04/07/2026 12:59

Don't call him anything!..he'll use it and try to turn it against you.
Stay professional...take it through the proper v
channels.
As you've stated, he has form and has been spoken to before.
Don't give him any anmunition.
