AIBU to ask you to make me feel better about this absolute howler of an interview? Or should I just leave the country?

So I had an interview today and it was over Teams in front of a panel of 3. I prepared well, and was sat in my home office at my desk on my new office chair

Anyway, before the interview, I’d been fiddling with the height adjustment of the chair as it wasn’t quite high enough for me. Finally got it sorted and all good.

so, I’m sat there and half way through an in-depth answer to a multi pronged question. I’m all animated and talking away when I suddenly feel myself descending but ever so slowly. I kind of stutter a bit as I’m SO distracted by this and I try to hold myself up by gripping my desk but it’s no use …. Literally, one moment I’m in their line of sight and then next, i gradually disappear from view as my hydraulic chair takes me all the way down as low as it will go.

I end up inches from my floor, desperately trying to scrabble myself back up and then I sort of PING back into view like a jack in a box to find one of the women on the panel literally helpless with laughter.

I just can’t. So mortified. Please tell me you’ve had worse?

It wasn't an interview but I did once famously finish a meeting with my newish boss and tried to sweep out professionally, walking straight into a glass door. It made this BWONNNNG sound that reverberated around the whole open plan floor. By the time I got back to my desk I had about ten emails with laughing emojis.

It was the penultimate question but I didn’t style it out tbh. I shrieked and started laughing and then saying ‘ Jesus bloody Christ’ … and then we continued but the air of professionalism I’d had was gone I feel

oh and the job? Think serious law type role.

I actually think this may have gone in your favour because it will make you memorable 🤣 it’s not the kind of embarrassing moment where they felt uncomfortable and awkward, you made them laugh which is good. Shows that you are able to deal with stressful situations and a sudden change in circumstances!

good luck with the job OP

I know someone who went to an interview hung over and one of the panel came to fetch her and held her hand out to usher her in- for some reason my mate took hold of her hand - so they walked into the interview room holding hands

Brilliant! 😂😂😂

Op, honestly I wouldn’t worry, it was a funny thing to happen, and let’s face it however serious the role, we’re all human. The fact that one of them was openly laughing I’d say is a good thing.

Fiddlesticks1 · 04/07/2026 07:32

This made me laugh. Do let us all know if you got the job.

raspberryrisotto · 04/07/2026 07:12

This has made me laugh so much. Thank you @TattyOldOwl

(I think you will still get the job!)

Grumpymiddleagedwoman43 · 04/07/2026 06:49

This wasn't an interview, but in my last job, office administrator, I had a manager who was fine, we were friendly, nothing more.
I used to suffer migraines regularly, and took a codeine tablet to cope with the pain, however they did make me feel pretty spaced out.
One day at work, a migraine came on so I took my tablets and waited a bit. Realised I needed to go home as it wasn't shifting.
My manager was fine about it, and walked me to the door; then he sorted of leaned forward, I now realise to open the door, but I got momentarily confused and thought he was leaning in for a kiss (why, why would I think that?), so I pecked him on the cheek and left. ...
Walked home with my head banging but crying with laughter....and concerned that I might get a call from HR....
To this day I'm not really sure what I was thinking....

Somebody posted on a thread on here years ago about job interviews.

She misunderstood a question , something along the lines of future ambitions , which they meant in terms of the career and which she seemed to think meant personally.

She said that she hoped to learn to make balloon animals.

I have often tried to find the post because it did tickle me!
If you are here, please re tell the story.!!

I remember reading on here about someone who was asked “what gets you up in the morning” and he said “well usually I need to go to the loo” except he didn’t put it that politely.

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/07/2026 05:51

@TattyOldOwl So it's a sideways move in the same company? I suspect they'll see the funny side and if you're a good fit, they'll overlook your "seating arrangements".

Expect to be sent on a training course on how to use a chair!😁

NotTodayPhyllis · 04/07/2026 03:01

There was a woman who posted on here a few months ago who had accidentally changed her teams settings so she had a top hat on for a serious meeting.
I don’t often laugh out loud when reading posts on line but that had me laughing for days, it was the way she’d phrased it that made it extra funny.

I went for an interview in my early twenties and when I sat down the chair made a loud farting noise.
I said “that wasn’t me” but the two men interviewing me didn’t speak and just stared at me.
I started to panic and started babbling that I promise it wasn’t me and it was the chair. Then I really made it worse by doing a loud sniff and almost shouting “see there is no smell, I promise I did NOT do a fart!”

One of the men had to clear his throat and say “shall we move on” to get me to shut up and I still cringe thinking about it.
The worst part was that as I was getting up at the end of the interview (that I made a pigs ear of) the chair made the same noise. I was about to point it out when I saw them exchange a frantic look and one of the men quickly got up and started talking about seeing me out and practically propelled me through the door 😆.

One of my best friends started working for the company a year later and I went to meet her from work one day and one of the men who interviewed me was there.
He kept looking over at me and I was praying he didn’t recognise me when he started laughing and said “oh it’s fart girl”.

I’d managed to force myself to forget about it until this thread…
I obviously didn’t get the job and was far more qualified than my friend who did but I don’t blame them because I must have cone across as an absolute nutcase!

TattyOldOwl · 03/07/2026 22:04

@RealityChecksNeeded well…. If it starts with a C and ends in an S and has a P in the middle … then yes. It is 😂

I’m already in so this is a side move to another department

well , it WAS a side move . The jury is out on that one after me making a colossal tit of myself.

I keep going hot and cold when I think about how it felt when it dawned on me I was moving. Downwards: and verrrryy slowly at that.

A side move? Nah... sounds like a downwards move to me! 🤣

Thanks for making me laugh really hard after a challenging week. I bet it was hilarious for the panel, and you shouldn't count yourself out yet!

randomchap · 04/07/2026 02:00

Had an interview after a bout of digestive difficulties. Thought I was fine

As I sat down, I let out a fart of impressive duration

Did not get the job

I really hope you do

@TattyOldOwl
I'm totally 😂 here (and hope it's true).

I once fell on a dais walking to the podium in front of a hundred people, or so. I was on the floor behind the podium, I reached up and had to sort of pull myself up, hair and glasses askew. I fixed myself and noticed a look of astonishment and bemusement from the group. Then gave my report. 🤷‍♀️

(Argentina just won against Cabo Verde, 3-2)

ilovepixie · 04/07/2026 01:41

Brilliant 😂😂

NorthCoast500 · 04/07/2026 01:40

Genuinely, if you’d laughed it off and shown that you don’t take yourself too seriously, I think for me it would have worked strongly in your favour. I am far more inclined to hire someone who shows their human side than some of the robots I’ve interviewed over the years.

This is brilliant. They’ll remember you. I hope you get the job.

Gooseling · 04/07/2026 00:51

Love it 🤣🤣🤣

I once burped mid sentence in an in-person interview. I didn’t even say “excuse me” or “sorry” I just carried on talking and didn’t even acknowledge it. I think I was too embarrassed to acknowledge it.

I got the job. And a few weeks after my manager was telling me one of the reasons she liked me was because I didn’t let the burp fase me and I just carried on.

Partingofthewaves · 04/07/2026 00:46

Thanks for the laugh, OP!

I had a zip go down the back of my dress during an interview. I was broke so bought it from a charity shop and it was a bit snug so I wore a cord jacket over it. It was mid summer and baking hot so I had to take the jacket off as I was overheating. I ended up trying to struggle back into the jacket whilst backing out of the room so she didn’t see the back of my dress gaping open. I was so flustered then but now would make a joke about it but I was young and inexperienced.

Say that if in the unlikely event they decide not to offer the job, would they please let you down gently
It’ll swing it

Brilliant. Please do this!

@TattyOldOwl your tale had me laughing until this. If you were interviewing for a serious law type role, but demonstrate in an interview that you easily blaspheme when something untoward happens, I would question your ability to act professionally and avoid causing offence in serious situations. Still an amusing story though.

You've clearly not met (m)any litigation lawyers. Swearing is very much in the vocabulary! Nobody would bat an eyelid at 'Jesus Bloody Christ', not even the clients!

Blaspheme? How very … quaint. She wasn’t interviewing to be the next Pope or Archbishop.

Presuming OP is in the UK we are a secular society. Religious in the minority now. Who cares if she says JFC, I certainly don’t.

I had a bad interview for my very first permanent job: I'd been temping in a factory, just working on the production lines. When a job was advertised in R&D, I put in an application. One morning, it started raining when I was walking to work. As I was a poor ex-student working in a physical role, I was wearing old clothes - an old t-shirt, fringed 'hippy' skirt and espadrilles, all of which had got rather soggy.
Unexpectedly, the head of R&D came to find me that morning, and asked if I'd be prepared to interview there & then. I agreed, and walked upstairs making swirly marks like a mop with my skirt fringes, and squelching in my espadrilles.
I was amazed when I got the job.

So you didn’t have s bad interview then?!

ItstoolateformeDaveyourselves · 04/07/2026 00:08

@TattyOldOwl
Thank you for sharing this it has made me laugh and I have no doubt it that as you are qualified that you are in the running for the job. I hope you get it.

I think you did well to hold your own and finish. It would have been funny for those on the other side, (who would also be having to try and control their reactions to it), they would know this is something out of your control and therefore not react. Although, if it was me, I would be the woman laughing because we are all human.

Don't worry at all about saying "Jesus bloody Christ" It is a natural thing to say in that circumstance.

As a career adviser, I can assure you that you won’t be forgotten by the panel when they’re deliberating candidates after all of the interviews and you can only hope that’s a positive thing 😂

I can beat that. Went for an in person interview in the 80's that I knew I was unlikely to accept (long story). I was sat across from the male interviewer on a swivel chair. Having an indepth and animated conversation and feeling comfortable, so I sunk back into the chair and as I did the back disappeared and I fell backwards off the seat and landed unceremoniously on the floor with my legs in the air and skirt over my head - good job I had my Brigit Jones Knickers on!

He apologised whilst trying to stifle a laugh and said he didn't realise they had put the broken chair in there. I was beetroot red.

At the end of the meeting, the cheeky beggar said it had been very illuminating and that he had got to know me better than he expected (!!! cringe!!!) and said I would fit in with his team, did I want the job!
