To skint us all by sending DC to private school?

Stilish · 02/07/2026 13:48

One DC is at private school. This is because they have SEN and was really struggling at local comp. This was before the VAT issue. That DC is absolutely flourishing.

Next DC has no SEN and started at the local comp last year. Is not having a great time at all, it’s a really poor school in many ways and this DC has gone from happy and high achieving, to unhappy and failing academically in 12 months.

I want to send this DC to the private school too, where I know they will thrive like their sibling. But with the VAT it will be an incredible stretch for our family and I don’t know what to do. I have one happy child in a good school doing well, and one unhappy child in a crap school not doing well.

I hate Kier Starmer and I hate Rachel Reeves. Their spiteful tax hasn’t punished any of the rich families. But I’ve been homeless and my husband and I have grafted since our teenage years, and it’s bloody punishing us.

What on earth do I do?

YANBU - find a way and send them
YABU - keep one child in the local comp and let them keep failing

I went to a private school. It was awful. I came from a poor working class background. Obviously all my friends went to a state school. They've all done fine. The education I received in O-level subjects wasn't notably better than the state school, and the education in entitlement never jelled with me. My partner grew up in a country with no private schools and their parents were school governors putting time and effort into helping turn around a school in a poor area. It's a brilliant school now (and my partner is doing the same on the board of our kids school). Private schools just steal away opportunity, reduce social diversity, and suck money from the middle classes.

And the savings generated are being invested in additional teachers - how awful

Gertrude whatever your name is.

It's taking pressure of the state system. Try working it out using basic maths.

There is no such thing as “to skint” us

It’s obvious what the op meant.

Hurryuphumphreygeorgeiswaiting · 05/07/2026 11:14

We were the same op. My dc's are dyslexic and needed full time support with their learning. I live in an area where the grammer and private schools are amazing but main stream arent great at all. Our local school closed down and most around our area are over subscribed so we new our dc's would of failed.
We put the costs on our mortgage and it helped with the 10%discount. We asked for a Bursary and they gave us an additional 10% off which did help a little.
My oldest dc's is at university and she received good grades with her gcse's and A-levels. The school helped with how she process her learning with flash cards, coloured paper, extra time in exams, etc. If you can, it will be worth the costs in the long run, not only for your dc's learning but also their confidence.

I sent all three of mine. We were nearly bankrupt by the end but it was worth every penny. I would do it again.

Wow you must be rich

tellmesomethingtrue · 05/07/2026 01:42

If you can afford £33k a year
on private school then you are a rich family. I only earn £19k a year!!

Do you understand what 1% of the education budget equates to?

Fuck off with you ‘latin’ joke. Gross

Yes
1.5 bn
What have you got against Latin?
And fuck off yourself

Shareadog · 05/07/2026 00:25

Papster · 04/07/2026 23:04

It’ll add 1% to the education budget
So there will be no discernible difference unless it funded something noticeable and specific, like Latin lessons for all

Maybe a bursary for your 2nd child? It’s worth exploring with the school.

Hardly likely to make a difference overnight was it.

My friends daughter has SEN and couldn’t attend school as it was just too stressful for her… they’ve now got her into a private school and it’s fully funded… why couldn’t you do that?

So she can attend school?

Shareadog · 04/07/2026 22:51

This government suffers from class envy.

explain this @OneLilacCrow. You think you are of a ‘higher class’ than others because you have more money? Even though, you don’t have quite enough to send your kids private, so therefore you’re not the ‘class’ required ?

Could your second child possibly also have SEN or ND? Why are they failing at a state secondary school so quickly after flourishing at primary? It doesn't really make sense. Are they being bullied? Or have mental health issues? What does the school say about their underachievement so far and what plan have they and you put in place to turn it around?

As an aside it always surprises me that people who can afford private school live somewhere where the state schools are so bad. Use the money you'd spend on your DC2's education in a private school on moving to an area where either the teaching is better or the pupil demographic is more engaged in education. Or is this really just trying to make an anti-government point because you support a right wing party?

I was thinking the same. It sounds like DC2 also has SEN. It happened to us as a family, putting so much resource behind DC1, only to find both were in fact struggling for the same reason. Secondary school is often when it become noticeable. Worth having a chat with the (SENCO at the) state school as a starting point.

ForeverTheOptomist · 03/07/2026 23:36

Unbelievable @Pollyanna87 . Who on earth do you think you are?

So many on Mumsnet have the attitude of, “Well, WE worked hard, so WE deserve private school!” Why do they expect anyone who could never afford private to care that they have to pay VAT? If they can’t afford it, they can’t have it, just like most of the country.

Crazybigtoe · 04/07/2026 12:24

Maybe it's got nothing to do with the school. Maybe your younger son just doesn't like school or just isn't academic? Maybe he is feeding off your vibes as you do seem to think that his school isnt as good? It's kinda a self fulfilling prophecy isn't it?

Anyway, take him out of state and get the other parents in the private school to subsidise him. One less in state means one less for the state school teachers to teach.

SueKeeper · 04/07/2026 12:08

How much sympathy did you have, pre VAT, for the families that wanted to go private but couldn't afford it by about 10%? Did you push the school to offer them a discount or more bursaries, did you care at all?

There have always been people who can borderline afford it, most people only care when they fall into that group. If you think about your previous attitude to people on the border, that's how much people are going to sympathise with you.

Nagyandi · 04/07/2026 11:59

Ineedanewsofa · 02/07/2026 13:59

DC’s school offers quite a generous sibling discount, anything like that available? Always worth applying for any bursaries as well, the academic ones can be quite hard to get but any sporting or musical talent might qualify.

In most private schools the academic/ sports/ drama scholarships are only worth 10% of the fees, and only once no matter how many scholarships you have. But I agree that bursaries and hardship fund applications should be the way to go.

I was commenting on the poster I was quoting use of the phrase "benefit scroungers".

Don't put too much savings away for them though as they might not get much help when they are 18.

Yes, I know - my quoting might be messed up. Not having a go at you.

Claiming what you are entitled to, even if you're 'playing the system' (dropping your working hours) to claim as much as possible does not make someone a scrounger. Not claiming does not make you a better person. You could put any money you don't need at the time into savings to ensure the person has a safety net in the future.

I don’t think that removing charitable status benefits for businesses - which is what private schools are - is your problem. Your issue is that your children don’t flourish in mainstream and you can’t afford to send both.

I think I would struggle with the inequity as a parent if you don’t send both. Neither can cope in mainstream. How would you explain it to your second child when older, that you prioritised the other child’s needs?

It is a very tough one for you. In your shoes I would beg steal borrow to send both. I would sacrifice all other luxuries in pursuit of equity.

As a wider discussion, we need to make our state schools suit the needs of all children. Teacher here. We need more money (in terms of budget, not pay), more resources (physical, human) and a more flexible curriculum that allows teachers space to breathe life into learning, rather than motor through massive content leaving many behind.

no one should feel they have to privately educate to get an education.

If we were still in the EU, the government would not have been allowed to impose VAT on private schools. They might be a business but EU rules state that taxes cannot be imposed on education.
This government suffers from class envy. The VAT was supposed to pay for more teachers in state schools (2024 manifesto pledge) but there are now almost 2000 fewer state school teachers than there were then.

OldTiredMum1976 · 03/07/2026 12:30

Have you claimed DLA for your child with SEN? We struggled to send 2 children with SEN to a private school as the local one is shit. Once the VAT was added we could barely afford it. So I claimed for everything I could. I never claimed anything before as we earn decently and didn’t need it. I now get £400 a month DLA for each child, I get about the same in PIP for my arthritis and I have dropped down my self employed hours so I can claim Carers Allowance. All in all, we now get an extra £1500 a month tax free which pays for one school place completely. If you can’t beat all the other benefit scroungers, join them!

We would never have claimed any of that if the VAT hadn’t have been added. So it actually costs the taxpayer more for our family now. I have no regrets! No one gave a shit when my children with SEN were shafted…so I don’t give a shit now!
