To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

True.

Yet you are spending a lot of time on it.

The what? I think you had a problem finishing your last sentence there.

Use your imagination

OonaStubbs · 03/07/2026 19:49

The game may be moved to 7pm on Sunday - so the bank holiday would be unnecessary. I don't know what would happen to the pubs opening late.

Employers don't need to honor any additional bank holidays, as long as they meet the minimum annual holiday requirements.

i think it's becoming more common for bank holidays to just be absorbed into the annual leave entitlement. All my employers in the last 20 years have done that.

means I take the day when it's convenient to me not on a prescribed day

So would you rather we got rid of all bank holidays so you don't have to pay your employees for them?

Pre match drinks, maybe.

RaininSummer · 03/07/2026 18:45

My last job, a bank holiday meant a day less of annual leave so people need to bear in mind that not everyone has jobs where another bank holiday is just absorbed by the employer.

Which us employers have to pay for. As a small family business, each Employee we pay to have a day off cost us money out of our pockets. We also lose productivity which costs money. So i’m assuming you don’t mind paying my five employees a days wages each? Don’t worry, I’ll cover the rest of the bank holiday holidays just not the one that you think they should have because it’s just like the rest of the days.
Do you actually realise that the employer pays that money?

It will work just the same as the other 8 bank holidays.

Well it doesn't look like the bank holiday will be happening, which is a shame. Hopefully people will still be able to watch and enjoy the match even if they have to get up for work later that morning.

Then why are you wasting your energy on commenting?

The OP asked if the football was worth a bank holiday because it's on in this country at 1am. Some people don't think football is important enough to warrant a bank holiday and are commenting as such. I personally don't consider football important at all so I definitely don't think it's worth a bank holiday. Not even if they won the final would I think it was important.

It would be a very boring discussion if only people who agreed with OP responded and the result was 100% YANBU. Of course, footy fans react badly to anyone who tries to diminish the importance of this overhyped, overpaid, commercialised sport and it all ends up in Yah Boo Sucks. Predictably.
I note that the vote so far is 83% against.

It will work just the same as the other 8 bank holidays.

The government estimated that the additional bank holiday for the late Queen’s platinum jubilee cost the country £2.4 billion in lost GDP. Some will claim that the next effect was lower because of increased spending in hospitality, but in the case of a game of football I reckon that people will go to pubs and bars and restaurants regardless of whether it’s a bank holiday. So given the parlous state of the British economy, throwing away £2.4 billion because a bunch of footballers haven’t yet got through to the quarter finals seems like an over reaction. Maybe if it was the final…?

You can't just declare a bank holiday without notice!

They did for the Queen's funeral and thousands of operations and medical appointments were cancelled.

Call me a misery if you like, but you'd be moaning if your long-waited-for operation was cancelled because a few men were kicking a ball around.

My husband booked leave for the Monday months ago as it is our son’s football presentation weekend and he is the coach. It’s an all out time consuming event and my husband has done all the planning and organising as he always does because nobody ever helps out, even when he asks. To give the kids a weekend they deserve, he takes everything on himself. He wanted the Monday off to recoup and used his time in lieu. He was told this morning that all single day leave has been cancelled and no leave is allowed until Tuesday. He’s not arsed about the World Cup, he’s AuDHD and suffers burnout and books days off whenever he knows he has a hefty weekend because he is struggling with overstimulation currently. So next week he will more than likely end up with migraines and cluster headaches, nausea and it will take days for him to regulate and he will zone out. If you know ASD you know the drill.

As fate has had it, I have Monday off because I am visiting an elderly relative this weekend and I'd be severely annoyed if my employer told me I had to be in work just because of this.

Has your DH explained why he booked it and reminded them that it was months ago? Or is it because he's in the police etc so they need him?

Did anyone but the OP think there should be a bank holiday? I think most realise it’s a bit far fetched but would take the holiday if offered.

No. We all know it’s a non starter.
But it’s sad it brought out the worst in so many.

I’m a big football fan and will be watching the game live.

I will also do the school run and go to work like I do every Monday, and don’t think there should be a bank holiday.

out of interest, has anyone changed their mind since reading this thread?

My DCs are half French and when we lived in Beijing in 1998 France played in the World Cup final ( and won). They went to bed early and I woke them up at 2 am painted their faces before going to watch the game on a big screen being played in Europe. It is no different for the English children doing the same.

Sad to say, I fear it will be very different! It’s only the round of 16, England are a bit rubbish and they will lose 😞. So not even worth staying up for! But yes I agree, if it I were to let my kids stay up, they could work round it somehow and just be tired.
