To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Its a football match, nothing to get excited about. If a person wants to choose a bunch of men chasing a ball around a field, over their jobs, then more fool them.

No Im not Scottish actually! Not every English person supports England did you not actually compute that in your one sided brain! They don’t actually deserve to be in the stage they are bunch over over hyped over paid pre Madonna’s! You clearly have that mind set that the English football team are the best of the best.. they really aren’t even if they do win they’ve played pretty shite so far so you can’t justify or sugar coat it darling!! Watch that head of yours doesn’t swell to much now!

Most people support England because they are English.

And it's "prima-donnas", not "Pre Madonna's".

Well it doesn't matter now anyway because the game has been moved to early evening.

And back again.......

No! I have clients that need me. Also Self employed and if a BH is declared I’ll lose a whole day of pay!

If you are self employed you can carry on working? I would for sure. You can take a day off when you really want to…

Bank holidays used to constantly fuck up my husband's chemo schedule. Do you realise how many medical appointments/surgeries would be cancelled if you just chucked an extra bank holiday out there on a whim? Do you think that's less important than a game of football?!

Our Bank Holidays are set in stone. You can see years in advance where they fall.
So not sure why your medical team could not do the same.
Very occasionally we get an extra one. But it’s very rare.

No of course not, the owner of the business must pay them.

I am the owner of the business along with my DH. I also work full time and will not be getting a day off. So I should pay people to take a day off? Give them money out of my pocket so they can do bugger all and our business will produce nothing? How sustainable is that? Its literally taking money from my family by doing that. You really are quite dim.

Well it doesn't look like the bank holiday will be happening, which is a shame. Hopefully people will still be able to watch and enjoy the match even if they have to get up for work later that morning.

As grown ups it’s for them to decide when to watch so not to affect their jobs.

The fact that schools are having to bribe kids to attend school is pathetic. There is a school near us offering ice cream to the first 100 kids to turn up.

It’s a football match. Get over it. Fingers crossed if we get knocked out, we can get back to normal.

Meh. They'll still lose and you know it.

No. We already pay them. We factor it in to our costs. We don’t factor in an extra day because an imbecile on Mumsnet who clearly doesn’t have those costs thinks we should.
I ask you again - are you happy to cover those costs?

No of course not, the owner of the business must pay them.

So would you rather we got rid of all bank holidays so you don't have to pay your employees for them?

I'd only agree if we were in the final. Also re Bank Holidays in general, I think it's ridiculous having two in May-One should be moved to St George's Day.

Amd then there would be three in April!

Tryingtokeepgoing · 03/07/2026 21:39

As they’ve moved the match forward, will Mr Starmer be able to do one last ‘U’ turn and cancel the late opening of pubs. Seems a bit pointless being able to open until 5am if it’s all over by 10pm 😂

But then it would be near Easter. It would probably be better moving one to coincide with October half term.

Anyway it looks like the match will be at 7pm UK time on Sunday now (noon in Mexico City).

YABU. I love the football and will get up to watch it, then go to work in the morning. But a bank holiday will cost me leave hours and I work in a busy NHS clinic so not sure people would be happy having their long awaited appointments cancelled.

plomh · 03/07/2026 20:55

JohnnieFedora · 03/07/2026 19:41

They don't have to honour any Bank Holidays

But if you work for the civil service like me, you get them off regardless, When working in retail, you were given an allowance to book them off. Those colleagues who didn't work Mondays, got less allowance as most BHs are on Mondays

plomh · 03/07/2026 20:53

When will know in concrete its in the evening than the small hours?

If that is the case. No excuse for sickies and keeping DC from school

It is now thought that the time of the start of play will be several hours earlier because storms are forecast. Could be 7.pm (19.00) Sunday evening

BBC report says actually later - 7pm local time rather than 6pm

ReflectingPool · 03/07/2026 20:50

Genuine question, with no side. I have really no insight into football fanaticism because nobody I know has more than a passing interest. If that.

Do you enjoy watching the match even if the opposing team is wiping the floor with your team? Does there come a time when you have to switch it off, like if you are 9-0 down? Would you stop watching it then? Or would you still be entranced by the grace and skill of the opposing team? Would you cheer for their superior game playing? Would you nod your head in acceptance that the better team won?

I arrived in Leeds City Station some years ago, 6pm ish,to a wall of yellow vest clad policemen linked arm in arm, holding back a huge chanting crowd of football fans 1000s. of them. They just kept on coming (in the station!) I have no idea why they were converging on the station. I couldn't get out of there. It was very frightening. The police advised everyone to scatter and seek refuge on the platform from whence they came. Station staff allowed us back on the platform without tickets to travel. There had been a lot of trouble in the city centre and football fans had staged a march through the main streets for God knows what reason. Apparently a match had been lost and they were a bit cross. The march of 1000s of drunken chanting blokes lasted at least half an hour. My hotel was 2 minutes walk from the station, but it was over an hour before I was able to walk over freely to check in.

So I said to one policeman, that I hadn't realised there was a match at Elland Road today. He said, well no there wasn't. It was some match in Brazil or somewhere equally distant that had resulted in this near riot. Not even in Leeds! Not even in England! But some match, that had been lost by the England team in some other country, resulted in the entirety of Leeds City Centre being overtaken by a drunken riot. I'm talking shouty blokes with glazed eyes and beer cans in hand literally scaring the shit out of everybody who was going about their own business and not bothering anybody.

I know there must be very nice people who enjoy football. I just don't know any of them. I don't know anyone who is vaguely interested in football. It's just not a thing in my social circle. I have children who have children. My grandchildren have no interest in football. Probably because we take no interest and it's not yet in their world view. Kids who get dressed up as fans and go to matches are just being dressed up by their parents, and encouraged to be a supporter.

Children do what their parents encourage them to do.
Children at matches with hats and face paints are being indoctrinated that football is important. It's not. And they really need to learn that.
