To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Can I have bank holidays off to watch the Tour de France which starts this weekend then? And a fortnight for the Olympics in 2028 too?

Yes! I want time off for Le Tour. And all athletics too. And Wimbledon while you’re at it!

England losing its mind every big soccer tournament is amusing from the outside. Who knows? This might be the year.

I doubt it. Apparently England were losing to DRC for a good proportion of the latest game? I would imagine that the entire DRC team are probably paid about the same as 1 England player, and they’re still crap.

I think what’s more boring is everyone trying to pretend they’re fun and unique because they don’t like football

Agreed! It is the most popular sport in the country.

Those not liking football make up a (clearly, surprisingly) large proportion of the country.

Its the UK we seem to come to a halt over anything.

Haha. Most people just want to carry on their lives as normal without disruption. Nothing to do with being unique.

Really?! Overpaid pricks kicking a ball around a field warrants the whole country to grind to a halt?

Because like it or not, football is the most popular sport in the nation. It brings the majority of people together.

Yawn

emmetgirl · 01/07/2026 22:52

Don’t be ridiculous

RudolphTheReindeer · 01/07/2026 22:51

I don't see the need. In one breath people moan our young'uns aren't resilient enough these days and in the next people want a bank holiday because they can't cope with one day of being a bit tired if they choose to watch the football at 1am.

Maternityleavelady · 01/07/2026 22:49

Bank holidays before children: amazing
Bank holidays after children: more work and parenting….no thanks!

MiddleAgedDread · 01/07/2026 20:17

The majority of people in Scotland didn’t get one!
only 6 out of 32 local authorities authorised it and apart from the NHS cos they aren’t already f*cked I don’t know anyone else who got the day off.

Scottish Government civil service probably got the day off. Nobody else did. I understand those in NHS who had to work that day got paid double time and a day off in lieu.

Bloody ridiculous idea.

Oh come off it. It’s the end of term anyway!

Have you taught a class of 20 plus boys before with multiple needs? Why don't you come off it... We have 3 more weeks too

heyjudena · 01/07/2026 22:47

sanityisamyth · 01/07/2026 22:46

Not me it doesn’t. What about time off to watch all 5 days of Badminton Horse Trials?

Again - it’s the most popular sport in the country. Perhaps even the world. It’s a bit difference.

Absolutely not. How about a day off to watch England Netball? Why should men’s football get special treatment?

I'm worried about the amount of children in my class that will be allowed to watch it. They are 9 and 10. Monday will be awful...

Oh come off it. It’s the end of term anyway!

RaininSummer · 01/07/2026 22:40

Ridiculous idea. We can't all suggest bank holidays are added in with no notice because we fancy a late night.

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 01/07/2026 22:40

Yes. Absolutely! If I have to celebrate the pope getting new pants for an extra bank holiday - you can count me in!

Mansionscoldandgrey · 01/07/2026 22:38

Next year's World Worm Charming Championship is on June 26, which gives us plenty of time to lobby for a bank holiday 🪱

Also better than watching England 😂

ClairDeLaLune · 01/07/2026 22:38

MaCheCazzo · 01/07/2026 20:58

I had a really nice poo this morning. Would you all like a Bank Holiday tomorrow?

Grin

I’d rather look at that than watch England play football 😂
