Why are we just letting this continue? Charging MacMillan and other charities for office space. FFS.

The Crown Estate is a business doing perfectly normal business things. And of course charities, hospitals etc have to pay rent.
Some of the people on this board believe the most utter nonsense about the Royal Family. But they are fed it by the media - I heard a contributor on national radio last week confidently state that "ticket sales from visitors to Buckingham Palace go straight into the King's pocket"..... bullshit! The money goes to the Royal Collection Trust, which is an excellent charity which looks after the collection of artworks, objects, documents etc that belong to all of us.
So much misinformation out there....

sittingonabeach · 30/06/2026 22:53

Surely depends on how Trusts, charities, Duchy are set up. If set up so organisation is to hand out grants, benevolence then gifting land, peppercorn rent will be in their remit. If organisation is meant to be maximising income, then trustees (or whoever) will not be running organisation correctly by not renting out commercial property.

Bunnyfuller1 · 30/06/2026 22:50

And the anti trans just rolled into town….

Publishing tax figures are meaningless unless balanced with what the original income was, and what 3xactly from that income hasn’t been counted for tax purposes.

Landlords aren’t royals spouting platitudes about charity whilst still charging the rent. They already have enough income to survive without having to work for hundreds of years to come. And not all duchy monies go into the treasury.

The post is from FB but is actually factual, it’s not some random, it’s a chap working with the Green Party.

Oh, the Green Party, the party that can’t even tell what a woman is??! How reassuring.

I wouldn’t believe anything they said.

People do! I have shared one example that is high profile but there are so many more examples of amazing families and individuals giving or renting land to charities for a nominal sum.

And in fact I am aware of many playing fields and playground's that were gifted to local authorities or are rented to them for a peppercorn rent.

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 22:34

This.

Thats only part of the story.
The Duchy of Cornwall is not part of the crown estate. It's private wealth for the royals.

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 22:34

SamAylward · 30/06/2026 19:11

The royal family does NOT charge them rent.

It is the Crown Estate that is charging these rents NOT the royal family. They are two totally separate things and ALL profits from the Crown Estate go to the Treasury not to the royal family.

Go and google "The Crown Estate" for a full explanation.

Your post is based on totally false information.

Here's one of my favourite stories https://www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/26235696.naomi-jacks-continues-12-red-roses-rent-tradition/

This hospice, which provides so much desperately needed care and respite, just pays a rent of 12 roses a year

And I know of many other stories of amazing philanthropy. Where individuals and families with far far less wealth than the royals have made immeasurable differences to people's lives.

Naomi and Jack’s continues tradition of paying rent with a dozen red roses

Every year, on or around Midsummer's Day, the hospice has paid a peppercorn rent of 12 red roses to Naomi is part of a tradition dating back to…

@TankFlyBossW4lk most charities are exempt from tax if income used for charitable purposes

Dillbbb · 30/06/2026 22:18

If I owned a commercial property I wouldn't give any rent for free no matter what.

This. I think you need to do a bit more reading OP.

Also how many charities do you know that get free rent? Most will be paying market rates for their offices and shops....

Really? How many charities are exempt from Corporation and Capital Gains Tax? How many organisations tax take is "voluntary"?

Not only have they an obscene income, they hide it from everyone, have been accused of profiteering from eg the NHS and have been found to rent dilapidated properties.

I bet half the posters praising the RF are the same posters maligning Joe Bloggs, accidental landlord, renting out their flat to save for a rainy day.

‘Abolish the Duchies’, campaigners say

Just to inject a bit of balance to counter the "charities pay rent too" narrative....

There are some fabulous charities that only exist /thrive due to the enormous generosity of landowners either gifting them land or charging a nominal rent.

I wish we had a renewed culture of philanthropy and I wish the royal family would set the example.

Cutting the occasional ribbon and a trite interview about how much their care is not enough

They could make a tangible difference without even making a dent in their phenomenal wealth. So could many other billionaires and millionaires.

Exactly this. All their heartfelt words, turn it into action. They’ve got so much they really would cope. They won’t need food banks. Most others are proclaiming they support and empathise while they skim the profits.

Oh and o/p, macmillan cancer are one of the worst for leeching off the nhs to raise their money.

they pay for MM nurses, yes, in the nhs. But on short term funding, with a contract that once they stop funding their branding remains.

so many of the MM uniformed nurses you see are in fact nhs employed and funded. But the patients see a MM nurse, then guess who they thank and go fundraising for….

They’ve more money than they could ever possibly spend and people defend this? Ffs.

There are many more people with more money than they could possibly spend. Why haven’t you mentioned them? I bet you’ve bought goods that those people profit from too,

Is that the same Green party that believes rapists should be allowed to be placed in the female prison estate if they say they’re women? That Green Party?

Yetanotherone12 · 30/06/2026 22:08

Does that apply to anyone renting land or buildings to public services? Or is it just the crown estate you don’t feel should be paid?

Many, many buildings the police, nhs etc use now are PFI. We pay rent on all of those.

it’s the government selling buildings and renting from the private sector that’s the issue, not the crown.

Do you believe everything you hear on facebook, or just stuff from chaps working for the green party.
