To want to drop kick other people's phones across the room.

For context last night I ended up in triage, for no fetal movements at 36 weeks, where I wasn't seen for 4 hours because they "forgot about me".
The entire time I was there, there was a minimum of 3 adults watching videos on their phones at an audible volume, I found it really draining and inconsiderate, l understand that they were all trying to take their mind off waiting but it was a small room and there were people there who were visibly struggling.

Is it rude? Are you someone who wouldn't think twice about watching tv shows or hours of tiktoks without headphones in a public place?

My DD is a midwife and she's got endless horror stories about behavior on maternity units. It would appear that most leave their common sense and manners at the front desk. Or they just didn't have them in the first place.

i had a 2 to 3 week stay with my second. Lovely new building, been open a year, mostly single rooms with a nice TV. I always switched my TV off and ended phone calls when anyone came in the room, even the cleaner who would not be asking medical questions. Thought this was common manors. Apparently not.

All the outpatient waiting areas had limited internet connection and no 4G coverage. We actually spoke to each other as a result.

Icanseeasquirrel · 30/06/2026 15:14

Had a train journey yesterday for over half an hour next to a woman taking loudly on the phone for the whole journey.
Fascinating. Had no choice but to listen so I listened. Might have been her mum. Washing powder, fishfingers, socks, the picnic stuff, why she was itchy, why the baby didn’t like the dog.
Some people just can’t bear silence. She sat down talking and left the train talking. Shouting over the sounds of the train. Lots of WHAT I DIDNT HEAR THAT WHAT. Just to chat about nothing.
Agree. People are massively self absorbed these days.

Excited101 · 30/06/2026 15:10

I can’t bare it- it’s so so so unbelievably self centered. How have we become a nation of people who don’t think about others anymore?! Why does everyone have to listen to everyone else’s phone crap?!

I used to regularly ask people to turn it off/wear earphones. I’ve only had a bad reaction once.

cannibalfish · 30/06/2026 15:06

Not that bothered by people playing videos personally, no more annoying to me than people talking, but there is no real excuse not to have earphones/headphones. On the other hand notifications drive me insane, I keep my phone on silent/vibrate mode whenever I’m indoors to be mindful of other people but constant phone dinging is normal to other people.

DashItAll · 30/06/2026 15:02

Considering how easy it is to buy a cheap pair of earbuds, I do not understand how it has got so common for people to watch and listen to videos in public without them. It is also much easier to hear and more comfortable when using them so I just don't get it!

Nocommentisacomment · 30/06/2026 14:59

I always tell them, "Can you please turn it down?" The usual response is either, "It isn't loud," or, "It's none of your business."

That's ironic, because the moment they force everyone else to listen to it, they make it everyone else's business too. People are so self-centered these days that they don't even stop to consider anyone around them.
Welcome to the modern world. Disgusting.

I am glad your baby is ok.

Im so sorry that must have been so stressful and i hope you're ok.
i asked someone to turn down their volume or out head phones on, on a train last week. He was so shocked id asked but i asked politely - that tinny noise drives me insane. Headphones should def be worn.

I don’t find it rude. To me it’s no different to people talking in the room. However, I use air pods as I don’t want people hearing what I’m watching and I know the noise annoys some people.

More importantly, I’m glad your baby is ok. I had reduced movements late in pregnancy and there was a problem, so it’s always important to get it checked out. I was so worried, nothing around me registered, I think 30 people could have been listening to music and watching films and I’d have been oblivious. So glad all is well for you and baby.

It's very different from people talking and it absolutely is rude. Before phones, if someone went to an A&E waiting room with a portable radio, people would have thought they were mad and told them to turn it off because it was driving them nuts. A phone is no less annoying if someone's using it without headphones.

It's a weird, tinny, harsh noise and when it's TikTok or whatever, it's also flicking from one thing to the other quickly which is quite stressful for people to listen to they can't see what's happening on the screen.

AmberUser · 30/06/2026 11:00

Hope you're both okay now. Those last few weeks are the hardest, but the end is in sight!

Playing music and videos out loud is a pet peeve of mine. So rude and selfish. Last thing you need while dealing with stress and third trimester rage!

AlwaysExtraHot · 30/06/2026 09:45

Unbelievably rude and inconsiderate. The sound of music or TikTok or whatever coming out of a phone speaker is highly and specifically irritating. It's not at all like other people talking, or a radio or music playing in the background.
Sadly in London, where I live, not using headphones on public transport etc seems to be the norm now. I think I'd get a mouthful of abuse back if I asked someone to stop and, rightly or wrongly, I can't be bothered starting it.

RoseOliviaAu · 30/06/2026 09:38

Yes it’s rude. I’ve started asking people on the train the use headphones.

Backedoffhackedoff · 30/06/2026 09:28

Why didn’t you ask them to stop? You would’ve been well within your rights.

i had loads of reduced movements checks with my first, it really is a pita. I ended up in for daily monitoring which was even worse 😫

She did. Stop trying to derail her op.

Lentilcakes · 30/06/2026 09:09

I can’t bear it either & in an otherwise quiet waiting room it is very intrusive. It’s nothing like having a normal conversation IRL cos it’s louder and more ‘tinny’.
I’m glad your baby is ok. I remember going a couple of times with DS and I got on a monitor very quickly.

LakieLady · 30/06/2026 09:08

YANBU, OP, not at all.

I'm a phone fascist and if I had my way, it would be illegal to have your phone on speaker in any public place or on public transport.

Glad to hear your baby's fine, too. ❤

Muffsies · 30/06/2026 07:56

I'm surprised there aren't rules about it in hospitals, if there isn't there bloody should be.

Last year I spent several nights on a ward where other patients watched stuff on their phones, with no headphones, pretty much throughout the night. Two of them also started up loud chats at 5 each morning, on such topics as which mini mart near them does the cheapest energy drinks.

Legoninjago1 · 30/06/2026 09:00

It’s absolutely unbearable - and it’s everywhere and I can only assume the people who do it are a bit dim. Hope you’re ok OP and the baby is alright.
