Should I dump my boyfriend because he won't stop eating crisps?

I'm in a relatively new relationship (7 months) after over 2 years of being single with some dating disasters along the way. Everything seems great on paper, he is kind, has a good job that pays well, not bad looking, treats me well and never allows me to pay for anything. For context, I am 28F and he is 32M- we both live separately at present. I would like to settle down soon.

I'm unsure if I am self-sabotaging, but some of his eating/snacking habits disgust me, to the point that I think I've developed the ick. This came to light properly on our recent 2 week holiday-prior to this, the longest we had spent together was about 3 days. He eats at least 3 packets of crisps per day and not the sophisticated type i.e kettle chips, think more Skips/monster munch/Nik naks/cheesy wotsits/space raiders. He doesn't wash his hands after eating the crisps and requires prompting to do so. This often results in him having disgusting synthetic crisp dust all over his fingers and fingernails.

Even more disgustingly, after he's finished with a packet, he arches back his head and empties the remnants of the crisp crumbs into his mouth. It's almost as though he cannot bear for a single scrap to be wasted. But the most disgusting is sometimes, after finishing a packet, he will blow up the packet like a balloon and pop it. This has resulted in me being sprayed with crumbs. I've also found scrunched up crisp packets wedged behind his bed, almost as though he can't be bothered to walk to the bin.

We recently went on holiday to Spain and it was mortifying-he didn't try any local food and just wanted to eat British food, McDonald's and crisps. We went to the supermarket and he loaded up the trolley with crisps. I haven't said anything yet, he is keen to start looking for a flat to rent together, but I just can't help but thinking I would prefer a man who doesn't eat over 3 packets of crisps a day and doesn't smell like pickled onion Monster Munch or cheesy wotsits. Is eating all of those crisps a dumpable offence?

I wouldn’t give a shit if someone ate a few packets of crisps.

I couldn’t live with someone who went abroad and didn’t want to eat any local food though. I can’t stand unadventurous eaters; it drives me mad.

Agree completely!

I love a crisp myself, but Jesus. That sounds horrific, especially the inflating/bursting the empty bags and showering you in ultra-ultra processed crap. But add in the refusal to eat Spanish food in Spain and you have yourself the opposite of a keeper, I would assert.

I have to agree.

LeaderBee · 01/07/2026 13:36

Doesn't bother me at all that he eats tons of crisps. I've been known to binge of shit food from time to time as well, but the childish popping bags and the absolute lack of any adventurous eating when you're abroad are the big problems here.

Was it that he "Just" wanted to go to McDonalds and you caved or was it that he outright refused to try any foreign foods at all? If its the latter he can get in the bin, part of going away is eating all the cool and exciting foods you don't get at home ad if he's stopping me doing that, one of the main reasons i'd want to go abroad then I couldn't deal with it.

mydogisthebest · 01/07/2026 13:33

Eating that amount of crisps a day would be pretty bad in my view but eating things like monster munch, cheesy wotsits, skips etc! In my view he has no taste in food whatsoever and I could not be with someone like that.

Monster munch and whatsits are vile and they stink. I would almost rather starve than eat them.

DH eats marmite crisps which I think are awful but only maybe once a fortnight

BeWittyRobin · 01/07/2026 13:25

I can think of worse ‘red flags’. But if you’ve been given the ick and there is no going back for you then I would say call it a day.

MimiGC · 01/07/2026 13:24

I’m intrigued by all the people who think not washing your hands after eating crisps is ‘poor personal hygiene’. That sounds bizarre to me and I have never seen anyone jump up and wash their hands after eating crisps. They are greasy, so sure I’ll wipe my fingers on a tissue, but that’s as far as it goes and I certainly wouldn’t appreciate being accused of being a minger for it!

Tigercat14 · 01/07/2026 13:24

Sorry but I couldn't help but laugh at your post 😂 what is he a 10 year old 🤣 in all seriousness though I think it's more the not willing to try other foods while in another country that would put me off plus the hygiene of not washing his hands before after eating the crisps is vile.

YourWildAmberSloth · 01/07/2026 13:21

You are clearly not compatible OP, so why force it? Some of your comments actually sounded quite condescending, like he's a nice guy but he's not quite good enough for you. Yes, if you coach him, he could probably change or at least act differently, but that wouldn't be who he really is which in time would cause resentment. Eating is a big part of who someone is and if his eating habits disgust you (not annoy or irritate, but disgust), then you really should just walk away. To answer your question, you shouldn't dump him because he eats crisps, you should dump him because you are incompatible, and your values are not aligned.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with preferring a man to pay for me and having traditional values.

he has been incredibly mollycoddled his entire life, has never really cooked a meal for himself and I had to show him how to use the washing machine. His mum does it for him usually (I didn't realise this until recently).

So you are happy to be a domestic servant to a man-child as long as he pays for everything?

Good luck! The crisps will be the least of your problems with this one.

To be fair to the OP I don't think she's prepared to hold up the woman's end of the "traditional values" bargain. She wants a man who does the laundry and pays for everything. And obeys her on when, what, and how to eat. God help the poor fella.

Myselforsomeonelikeme · 01/07/2026 13:17

If this is seriously about a crisp habit you're being ridiculous. The perfect person doesn't exist, everyone will have an annoying habit or 10, yes, even the one you end up with. I would be far more concerned about whether you align on the big things in life, job, kids, marriage etc etc those are what will become deal breakers if you get more serious. As long as he doesn't stop you enjoying the food you want to eat then his being a little uncultured shouldn't be an issue. Sounds like you need a little reality check here, you're being a bit of a princess. P.S have you tried asking him to stop popping the bags and putting crumbs everywhere?!

Spicyseniorita7 · 30/06/2026 17:18

I personally think that eating kettle chips is more socially acceptable than wolfing down a grab sized back of monster munch in front of your girlfriend and barely coming up for air!

It would be an awful lot more calories though. The little bags of skips, wotsits etc are essentially a few bits of flavoured air

SkippitySkoppity · 29/06/2026 23:29

Am I your boyfriend? I too eschew fancy crisps for delicious plebeian crisps. I don't explode empty crips bags though, but may have to explore introducing that to my repertoire.

Edited

I don't think that crisp packets can be exploded as well as they could in th'olden days when they also had a blue twist of paper containing salt!

When they have them in I love to buy the garlic and herb bruschetta from Aldi, one of the most satisfying thin is once the packet's empty I cut off the top 75% and get a little spoon to get the wonderful garlicky crumbs from the bottom of the bag, I will then run a damp finger round to get the last bits!

worldshottestmom · 01/07/2026 13:13

Yanbu to have the ick as that is all really vile tbqh. Yabu not to simply just bring this up to him. In any relationship there will be things you don't like, it's never going to go anywhere if you don't communicate your feelings and just dump them instead. Communication really is key

liveforsummer · 01/07/2026 13:11

There is about 5 crisps in each pack these days so 3 isn’t loads however the noting but crisps and McDonald’s on holiday would probably be a deal breaker! 😅

Well hon if you’re objective is a man who pays for you I’d suck up the crisp habit.

This!

Though I don't for one second think this post is genuine. Its comedy gold. The outrage at the munched crisps being nik naks rather than posh crisps, like kettle chips was a particularly masterful touch. Bravo OP!

I live by the saying "posh bubbles and cheap crisps"...

moto748e · 01/07/2026 13:00

Schoolboy habit that seemed dead cool when you were 12, carried on into adulthood. I can remember blowing up crisp bags too. But not as an adult.

Cherrytree86 · 01/07/2026 13:00

what is his physique like, OP? I can’t imagine it’s very good when eating three packs of crisps a day.

Also, his breath…?! Can’t be too fragrant

Hotlipshoolahan · 01/07/2026 12:58

I love spicy nik naks. I also think kettle chips are crap.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with preferring a man to pay for me and having traditional values. I want the man I marry to be able to provide for me and our future family- I don't want to be penny pinching when I'm on maternity leave or begging him for pennies.

So many of my dates have consisted of men expecting that I pay for my own dinner and glass of wine or worse, wanting to go for a walk like I'm some sort of border collie. I don't make loads in my job in the public sector and it is nice to have someone look after me and treat me from time to time. His family are very well off too. But he has been incredibly mollycoddled his entire life, has never really cooked a meal for himself and I had to show him how to use the washing machine. His mum does it for him usually (I didn't realise this until recently).

So you want a man who treats you traditionally but you are shocked that same man is reliant on women to do basic things for him which is traditionally the way things are done.

sorry, but you need to reassess this mentality when dating as it might bite you in the arse when picking a life partner.

I could have similar crisp habits if I was left to my own devices so I wouldn't dump someone for this. But if its making you resent him and you can't talk about it, then I would suggest you finish it because it will only get worse and you'll probably find other things you don't like about him as well. Resentment is a total relationship killer IMO.

misogynyisbigotry · 29/06/2026 23:43

I would leave him for the bit about not allowing you to pay for anything; that could easily spiral into economic abuse/coercive control if it isn't already.

Yes, something is off here.
