To find Andy Burnham’s sudden rise to the top odd?

A few weeks ago, I’d never heard of this man. A few weeks ago, he wasn’t even an MP.

Yet suddenly, he’s everywhere and going to be our next prime minister? What qualifies him for this role? It seems that all the Labour MPs love him. Why?

The whole situation is very odd to me… I’m not sure it’ll do Labour any favors at all.

Can you name a prime minister who did?

Margaret Thatcher was a chemist
Tony Blair was a Barrister
John Major was a banker
Rishi Sunak was a banker

i am pretty certain this was a huge achievement

True, I agree with that, he did work hard to get justice there. I had forgotten about that, my bad.

Dameputtingonabraveface · 29/06/2026 21:39

Whilst I may have my reservations about how the current govenment have acted to basically oust KS and position AB to be prime minister (it is not usual within labour, the Tories are very well known for this type of behaviour), I do understand their thinking.

I actually have a lot of respect for Keir Starmer and consider he inherited a completely broken country. He was expected to fix this overnight without a raise in taxes, upsetting business who have made huge profits under the last government- many delivering outsourced public services. He had to deal with the populist rhetoric that all of our problems are down to immigration rather than the previous government's austerity progranme etc. and the legacy of the shit show that was Brexit and the huge devision populist politicians have created within the UK.

I am hopeful in that Andy Burnham has pubically recognised the above, and also that regions outside of London need autonomy to make decisions. I live in Leeds, which is a thriving city, the biggest centre for law and finance outside of London. There is also a huge student population due to 3 universities and internationally acclaimed dance and music schools.

The previous government cut central funding to my local authority by 10s of millions every year. At the same time, many statutory services needed by our most vulnerable were outsourced to private companies who make huge profits. I consider this a national scandal- a placement for a vulnerable teenager often costs the LA and the tax payer £10 000 a month and can easily be a lot more. Just one example of how public funds have been mismanaged for years, making money out of our most vulnerable.

Also, although the impact was not positive overall from my point of view, Mrs Thatcher had a huge impact and will be remembered for quite some time to come.

Really? He's lost two previous bids to be leader of the Labour party... not sure what's changed now suddenly that he's got a free pass to be the Prime Minister after only being an MP for a day or two. No opposition. It seems very strange.

To be fair I should have said "had a go at" "been keen on the idea" "others have suggested" rather than "tipped" but hes certainly not suddenly appeared as a prospect from nowhere. Not that Im a fan tbh.
I have felt politically homeless now since about 2018. No plans to vote Labour again until they understand what a woman is and is not.

On the BBC yesterday there was some speculation that David Miliband could come back from the US, be elevated to the Lords and become Foreign Secretary. I'd be in favour of this if it meant that Ed Miliband won't become Chancellor.

@user1471453601 may I remind you this is a chat forum.

People don't have to do "research before posting " because it's a chat forum and not a university where people are submitting work to be marked.

Yeah but why not just do a quick Google before announcing to the world you're ill informed?

Thats hardly revision

The Labour Party really are clutching at straws with him. I can see why @GarlicBiscuits wouldn't know who he is. From a certain perspective, if one has become jaded about politics in recent years (understandably), and doesn't really follow the fringes, just the main headlines, and lives in the south, it would be easy to not pay attention to a name mentioned that one doesn't recognise.

That said, he has definitely been in the news, as so many posters have already said.

I wonder who his cabinet will be? There aren't exactly names aplenty. I also think Labour have lost the next election by backing him.

About his only redeeming feature was the Monty Python reference when he was heckled while being sworn in. Smug twat.

Hillsborough: Andy Burnham reveals his highs and lows as the truth came out

Andy Burnham MP played a key part in uncovering the scandal behind the death of 96 football fans. Last week he watched David Cameron deliver his powerful apology to the people of Liverpool, then savoured the delight of the vindicated relatives

The far left want a kindred spirit. That's why. Except for being Mayor of Manchester, what exactly has he done? Has he ever had a job outside politics?

I am sure he will be remembered for a very long time and will have greater impact than a lettuce.

Not strange at all. Sunak lost a leadership election but won a second time with no opposition.

It’s all about timing.

Nevertheless, I agree his sudden Messianic elevation is odd. It’s going to be a hard one to live up to.

Sudden? Maybe if you looked outside your front door occasionally…

Yabu. He’s been tipped as a likely future PM for years.

It hasn't come out of nowhere but it is why KS prevented him from standing as a candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election. If he had won there, I think they would have worked alongside each other until much nearer the GE, KS is the instrument of his own downfall. He showed very poor judgement for the umpteenth time.

I have mixed feelings on Starmer. From the manifesto he has done a lot. The media wanted his downfall and his lack of charisma aided that. However he has also done some really shit stuff and I don’t like him and never voted for him and probably never would. I agree that Starmer was threatened by Burnham.

As I said on another head though, so I like Burnham? No. Do I want him? No. Am I praying that he is amazing and I eat my own words and prevents Farage, who is utterly fucking useless from getting the PM position and squeezing this country for every single penny he can get? Absolutely-fucking-lutely. I hope I am wrong and he is amazing because the alternative is too scary.

It's hard to blame people for not wanting the role - very long hours, loads of abuse/death threats and ridicule, earn a fraction of what other less stressful jobs pay.

Some of the MPs we have work their arses off.

Can't argue with that either.

AlwaysRightISwear · 29/06/2026 21:07

I must admit I'm a bit concerned about the latest announcements of major structural changes to government when he doesn't have a manifesto mandate for them. I wouldn't normally join the chorus calling for a new election but this makes me want to.

Whataflippincircus · 29/06/2026 21:06

I’m not massively into politics but I feel that I have known about Burnham forever.

RedRosie · 29/06/2026 21:04

He's a career politician and a Blairite. I'm to the left generally, but can't imagine this is the answer to anyone's problems ... But there you go.

I saw him buying wine in Morrisons a few years ago so he seems alright to me. I’m no politics expert though.

Love this. Their wine is terrible but it somehow makes me like him more.

SaskiaWatkins · 29/06/2026 20:40

Andy Burnham has been on the political scene for years and years. His popularity in Manchester has been increasing. His takeover of the Labour Party has been being discussed for months and months. I recall listening to a discussion on Radio 4 last November on my way to the dump about Starmer and Burnham and their dislike for each other.

This hasn’t come out of nowhere at all.

mumumental · 29/06/2026 21:02

Regardless of your political position, it’s surprising you hadn’t heard of him. He has been a senior Mp previously, and was Secretary of State for health.

SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet · 29/06/2026 21:02

Dameputtingonabraveface · 29/06/2026 20:37

@SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet of course lots of us who live in the north know who Sadiq Khan is. He has been the mayor of our captital city since 2016 and is freqeuntly discussed in both the national and international press. It may also suprise you that many of us uneducated clog wearers have links with London and the southeast and hold valid views on his tenancy. Only a few months ago I was arguing with a colleague because my friends and family in London rated him for the positive changes he has made whilst her mate was fuming about the congestion charge and therefore everyone hated him!

Hang on, so some people have actual friends in London? That they can talk to and everything? Gosh, really? Sure they’re not lizards in disguise? You make it sound like you can actually get there in less than six months.

JuliaBraverman · 29/06/2026 20:56

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/06/2026 20:14

Being Mayor of Greater Manchester is hardly the wilderness. Boris Johnson's springboard to becoming PM was serving as Mayor of London.

And that worked out so well….

StopMeIfYouHaveHeard · 29/06/2026 19:47

You are absolutely right to be suspicious OP and the faux “you could just google him” posts are tedious.

He’s clearly being installed to continue what Tony Blair started.

I wonder how long before we’re involved in another war in the middle east? Not long, I’d hazard.

This is a hilariously bonkers take. Someone doesnt understand the different flavours of socialism within the Labour Party.
