AIBU to ask if I can report my neighbour's bright blue house?

I live in a terraced house. My neighbours have painted the back of their house bright blue (think swimming pool blue / like the Mikanos blue). It is horrible and looms over my garden. It’s really going to spoil my enjoyment of my space to have to look at this every day. I spoke to the wife earlier this morning and said it was not to my taste and would they consider changing and she said ‘the beige of your house isn’t to my taste but it’s your house. This is my house.’ And shut the door in my face. WIBU to report them to the council? Can I even do so? Surely you can’t just paint any offensive colour and expect neighbours to live alongside it?

I would say this is the colour though their window sills and edgings are in white.

You can feel however you want.

That doesn't mean you should also go onto your neighbour's property, knock their door and disturb their peace to tell them you don't like something about their house.

If living communally is such a bother, you need to relocate to a detached property, in the middle of nowhere!

I would have a look at your local council's website and see if there are any restrictions. Otherwise, I think you'll get used to it. At least it's not as bad as noise from neighbours.

Godfrey Street. We used to live round the corner from there. It was lovely and cheerful on those endless grey winter days.

We now live in a different area of London, well known for colourful houses. The tourists love them.

Embrace it OP.

I think this is a classic MN example of most people commenting would probably hate this if it was their situation but very happy to be reasonable about it because it’s not their problem it’s yours.

Can you grow some tall plants etc to screen the view a bit?

But I think you've got no choice. By all means speak to the council but unless it's listed or conservation they can have it as they please.

I mean if it had 'fuck off' in giant letters then maybe not but it's just a blue wall.

@LaPerruque Haha, I was just about to mention the Headington Shark! I used to live just around the corner from it, it's fantastic.

This thread has made me think of the Headington Shark. Which got retrospective planning permission with the comment from the relevant planning inspector that 'any system of control must make some small place for the dynamic, the unexpected, the downright quirky'.

One of my back bedroom windows is half covered by a temporary paper blind from when we moved in (16 years ago) and a shredded bin liner.
My neighbour is a gossipy twat though, and she has windchimes. So the window is staying that way 😆

OP should ask for compensation also for the mental suffering she experienced from looking at the blue paint.

This is a bit bonkers too. I'm by no means wealthy but I can afford decent clothes and I also still wear some clothes with holes in if I'm just pottering about at home. Not everyone cares so much about their appearance. In fact (just due to circumstances) I know a handful of genuinely old money rich/middle class folk and have noticed that they generally do not care what they look like nor what they drive (pick their kids up from the local private school in muddy wellies, holey jackets, drive old cars etc). They have nothing to prove. Being comfortable in old clothes isn't indicative of 'common' anymore than designer clothes and a neat appearance means you're well-off and a member of the bourgeoisie.
