To love having a girl?

NutellaPancakes123 · 29/06/2026 12:16

I’ve never said this to anyone as I worry how it would come across.

I have a boy who is 9 and a girl who is 4. When I had my boy I was overjoyed, I actually wanted a boy and I used to tell myself I’d be happy if I had another boy. But I’ve always been a girls girl myself growing up, very pink, Barbie, make up etc.

i love them both completely equally. As little humans they both are amazing to me my boy is clever, loving and I adore him. But I just LOVE having a girl. I sometimes think my god, I’ve actually got a girl. I still almost pinch myself that I can wander the girls aisles and I can buy things with unicorns on and I can have a Barbie house in my home! I just love having this little girl and saying “girls day!” after the boys have been able to say boys day before she was born. I feel no one else seems to say this though. I don’t know I just feel so lucky I get to experience having a girl.

is this odd?

You are kidding yourself if you think you love them equally, and no one believes you.

JacknDiane · 29/06/2026 15:19

That's lovely @NutellaPancakes123. I have just boys and often wonder what a girl would be like. Im not a girly girl but I suspect if I had a daughter she wouldn't be either.
But who knows 🤷‍♀️

These "stereotypes" exist for a reason. Because in general girls and boys play differently and enjoy different types of toys, and there's nothing wrong with that. Boys and girls are different, despite what some people want to believe, or have everyone else believe. I have boys and girls so they're all exposed to all the different toys in the playroom, and what the boys choose to play with compared to my daughter is completely different. Also what my two boys choose are often different to eachother, it's all personal choice.

This is such a confused, self-contradictory post.

YANBU. I have two girls and I feel so lucky every day that they’re girls. I’m so grateful.

Theyre the best of friends, they love matching outfits, cute hairstyles, lots of pink and frills and unicorns. It’s everything I dreamt about when wanting children.

I wasn’t sold on a third, but one of the huge factors against a third for me was that it could have been a boy. I got lucky twice and they’re so close that I didn’t want to jeopardise that.

I have 2 girls. One was girly and pink the other completely opposite

They never got on

Not necessarily odd but sad in that you are bringing up your children with reductive stereotypes of what are girl's things v boy's things! I was sort of hoping that as a society we were moving away from the 'pink princess' version of being a girl and teaching our girls that they can be/wear/play with whatever they like!

Unfortunately some posters still live with the pink for a girl and blue for a boy mentality

No but it is horrible to say you wouldnt risk another pregnsncy just in case it was a boy.

I think that if that's how you feel about boys its a good thing. Let's hope the girls keep on being cute eh?

Have you even given them the opportunity to try activities like football, playing with train sets

Yes, over the years they’ve seen these toys and activities at playgroups, classes and afterschool clubs. They’re not interested 😊

I love having a girl, she is all grown now and an only child but I can’t imagine having a bond with a boy like I do with her.

Wwll thars becsuse shes your daughtee
I have a very close relstionship with my 19 year old son .

CheeseFiend40 · 29/06/2026 14:55

Parker231 · 29/06/2026 14:43

Do you not play Barbies and babies with your DS’s?

No, they have no interest in the barbies. I play beyblades or lego etc with them.

Nmeag · 29/06/2026 14:52

I had 3 boys and my 4th was a girl... I LOVE having a girl for all the reasons you mentioned. She's 2 and I still can't believe she's real. I adore my boys they are amazing, I just feel like she is the cherry on the cake and I love hanging out with her. I hope that she and I have a close relationship when she's older as I am super close to my own mother and I was also the only girl. Enjoy it all as they do grow and change so fast xx

YankSplaining · 29/06/2026 14:49

YANBU. The odds are that a boy is not going to be into makeup, Barbies, et cetera, and while not all girls will be into those things either, there’s certainly a much higher chance. And I think it’s natural to want to share your interests with your children.

I have two daughters, who are eight and eleven, and while I have interests they don’t share and they have interests I don’t share, I think we’d have a lot fewer overlapping interests if they were boys. Most boys are not going to be excited about new Rainbow High or Monster High releases (I’m a doll collector), or want to make earrings with their mothers, or have a favorite American Girl character (we’re American), or get really into fairies and mermaids. Even with a lot more “neutral” toys, boys and girls, on average, play differently. My husband, my daughters and I all love Lego, but my husband spent his childhood building spaceships and tanks, while my daughters like to make houses and playgrounds for the minifigures.

Just make sure you’re spending special time with your son as well.

youalright · 29/06/2026 14:47

I loved having girls when they where younger but the teenage years where rough I found the boys a lot easier as teens

Warmthofthesun · 29/06/2026 14:45

My ds has never shown any interest at all in dolls or stereotypically ‘girls’ toys.

That isn’t to say we don’t have any common ground. We both like nature and animals, books and history. But the doll thing? Not happening.

DD has loads, though (all called ‘baby’, rather unimaginatively.)

You've really riled everyone up with your post OP!
I actually completely understand what you're saying as I feel the same. I always wanted a girl, as I had such a close relationship and friendship with my own mum I always hoped to have that with a daughter of my own. After having two boys (who I absolutely adore and love to pieces) I knew I would want to have a third with the hope to have a girl.

Unfortunately my mum passed away when I was pregnant with DS2, but when we found out our third was going to be a girl I just felt she was my little gift from my lovely mum. I absolutely adore having a girl, we play barbies and babies, we say things like "it's just the girls at home today". I also love having boys and feel very lucky to have both. I have a particular bond with DS2, he's most similar to me in personality and he's very attached to me paticularly.

ToadRage · 29/06/2026 14:34

My Mum was like this when we were young. Then i grew up, started developing my own personality, figured out who i wanted to be instead of who she wanted me to be and she didn't like the real 'me'. We have nothing in common, she doesn't like my husband, we barely talk now.

Fair enough.

I am a dad and wanted our second to be a boy as we had a daughter. But our second daughter is such a joy that I don’t care. I never think about it and am truly grateful to have amazing, healthy girls.

GreenSmallBird · 29/06/2026 14:29

I have one of each and I am really disturbed by people who obsess about one or the other. Mine are both young adults now and I love the bones of each of them because they are both splendid humans not because of their sex or gender. Those with toddler girls banging on about girly days etc you just wait until they start asserting their own personalities at about 4 and you might be in for a shock.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/06/2026 14:18

Not all girls agre ‘girly’ though. My dd1 certainly never was, hated having ever to wear a dress, never wanted to play girly games, and still only bothers with makeup once in a blue moon. I sometimes think that in a previous era the trans activists would be falling over themselves to tell her she’d been born in the wrong body.

But she grew into a very female woman, with 3 dcs of her own.

Dd2 was a much more ‘typical’ girl, liked Barbies, makeup, retc., but has never wanted kids! Always said she’d prefer a dog!

Swissmeringue · 29/06/2026 14:08

I love having both a boy and a girl, there's nothing wrong with enjoying your children! But boys can like barbies and unicorns too.
