To be shocked that my good friend, 37, is seeing a 66 year old lady?

Had a few beers with a good friend recently and got a bit tipsy and we got into his dating life. He told me that he’s been seeing a 66 year old grandmother. He is only 37 for reference. They met via online dating.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with this but I’m just a bit shocked to be honest. He says that they enjoy each other’s company and there is no intention of it developing into anything more.

My friend has always dated younger women and not short of female attention at all.

It’s all good right?

Sixty-seven year old here, and I know a 37 man who has been asking me out for over a year. I’m 9 years older than his mum.

He says the age gap doesn’t matter, but why the fuck would anyone want to shag someone 30 years their senior? I can’t get my head round it. He works hard, is intelligent and funny, over 6ft and looks great.

Many men will have sex with any woman that offers it up. Seeing that person regularly is a different thing, this is where the genders differ. It’s not about pregnancy it’s about getting sex. This case is different as they are actively seeing each other.

I'm nearly 60, I've got friends who have FWB much younger. Many men, or rather people want regular sex, without any complications, the exact scenario that's going on here. My post was in answer to posters who are incredulous that this is a thing, it's very much a thing. As I said, the fact that an accidental pregnancy can't happen, is a bonus, especially if they've previously thought they were just hooking up with a woman in her 20/early 30s and the next thing, she's pregnant.

This thread is, indeed nauseating, or some of the replies are.
What sickens the 🤮most? is it the thought of her old and saggy body? That's what I'm seeing, disgust for an older body.

I see that old trope for half your age + 7 works for the woman, though. Which is nice.

Exactly, it is a bit shocking. My friend gets a lot of attention from women his own age and especially younger. But he’s really into this lady.

Just because a man receives a lot of attention from women doesn't mean those women want to date him. That's just called being friendly. It's not as if women want a relationship with every man that they're friendly with.

darksideofthetoon · 28/06/2026 20:06

I have never seen this and seen a lot of things. Yes, I know some guys go for older women but the age gap is very large.

Men don't "go for" older women or younger women.

Generally speaking, men don't factor age into dating. So if a man meets a 60 year old he likes, or a 25 year old he likes, it's all the same.

Men who are dating and who try to filter out potential partners based on age are going to find themselves permanently single, so they generally go for any age.

I thought this was all common knowledge.

You'll get lots of people playing devil's advocate on here, I think some are actively trying to cause argument, but I get you OP and it is a bit surprising when it comes about.

I have been in a couple of age gap relationships myself (just happened that way, I did not intentionally seek them out) where I have been both the younger and the older party.....

But that said, when an ex just three years older than me started seeing a woman nearly 30 years his senior I was shocked and also a tad offended (she was the one directly after me). I wondered if maybe I looked old and that's why he liked me! (daft looking at it now, but it's where my mind went!). In my mind he was extremely good looking (I was TOTALLY punching with him) and I could not understand why he wanted to be with someone older than his own mother 🤷

I moved on and gave up caring after a while lol

It sounds like an arrangement that works for both of them.

I really wouldn't be surprised if she is paying for all of the meals/trips etc though.

She is likely compensating him for his time with firm no-strings.

It's more common than people realise.

It even happened on The Archers fairly recently so it can't be that unusual! 😂

I take it he's not looking to get a girlfriend, though? he would be unreasonable if he entered into a relationship and kept this lady on the side, obviously.

Edited

No, my friend is a very high earner and generous. She is very comfortable so this has nothing to do with money.

The men on here.

Oh calm down please, have you read some of the things on here from women? They would make a sailor blush.

What is the problem? They are both footloose and fancy free.
She is a cougar which is quite popular nowadays. Think Joan Collins among others. If one was married it would be wrong ,but as long as they are happy it is only their business. So many judgemental people on Mumset. Too many holier than thou opinions!

Strawberrryfields · 28/06/2026 22:40

I’d be surprised too. I find it weird when people date someone old/ young enough to be their parent/child.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/06/2026 20:14

Too much of a gap. It’s half your age plus 7 years is the minimum.

Unfortunately my husband pointed out that even with the above it would mean I could date a bloke in his mid nineties 🤮🤮🤮

This "rule" is just some made-up nonsense.

They are both well into adulthood, and are happy with how things are between them. So who cares

Because my friend is a very sexual guy and we talk about this stuff. I would never ask if it was a serious relationship or had a chance of that. I was curious to know as that’s what’s drawn him in.

keepswimming38 · 28/06/2026 22:11

I’m not sure what you are protesting about. He’s an adult, she’s an adult. It doesn’t sound like she wants to start hanging out with you all so let it be. Why do some people feel that others need rescuing all the time?

BettyJoanPerske · 28/06/2026 22:08

Dollymylove · 28/06/2026 20:14

Reverse the genders and it would be virtually paedophilia in the world of mumsnet 🤣

That's what I was thinking. It doesn't bother me either way, but the responses would be very different and people would be calling him a 'creep' and a 'dirty old man'.

darksideofthetoon · 28/06/2026 22:06

CustardySergeant · 28/06/2026 22:01

Why on earth were you asking "how it was in bed"?

Im the same age as your friend and absolutely wouldn't look twice at a 66 year old i would see them as more a dad then a romantic relationship

MrsClattenburg · 28/06/2026 21:56

@darksideofthetoon some of thsze replies are wild!

37 and 66 😲

That's a serious age gap...

I know, that’s why I say I’m shocked.

Of course there’s nothing wrong and two consenting adults and all that. I was surprised a woman in her 60s would be interested in a guy in his 30s. We so often hear this about older men and younger women.

About half of divorced people never remarry.

Interestingly, divorce men are much more likely to remarry than women 🤔

Quite! I thought the statistics were that divorced women are very much in the lowest percentage for remarriage - but very true about men! It's so easy for people to spout absolute garbage on here and then get cross when others 'dare' to question it, despite having showed no evidence when they made their initial assertion. If you're going to assert a 'fact' then show your basis otherwise you're just a blowhard. I got accused of being anecdotal when the person who made the comment couldn't be arsed to back up their erroneous assumption with facts.

darksideofthetoon · 28/06/2026 20:10

Without going into details, they’ve got to know each other very well in bed. My friend doesn’t do platonic stuff. He lit up like a Christmas tree when I asked him how it was in bed.

Why on earth were you asking "how it was in bed"?

That's a made up rule.

I'd say, just go with the flow. If it works for you for a short while or longer then why put arbitrary restrictions on it.
