To remind people of French swimming pool rule

Just a quick reminder for people holidaying in France this year. Many public swimming pools and campsites insist that boys and men wear proper (lycra) swimming trunks in their pools. These can be traditional brief style, swim shorts or jammers but must be tight around the leg for hygiene purposes. Looser swim shorts are not allowed.
I'm currently on holiday in France and have seen a number of men asked to leave the pool because they were not wearing appropriate swimwear.

This has made me smile. DH has has to be surgically removed from his budgie smugglers due to DDs’ gentle mockery. But we haven’t had French pool rules to consider

Tuesdayschild50 · 28/06/2026 21:53

All the hubbies wearing nut huggers won't they be made up 😆🤣😣

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/06/2026 00:04

Yes, dh once had to buy a pair of budgie smugglers at a French pool shop. Horrible things!

😆

I disagree. I think many women do wear a bikini all day under shorts and t-shits etc.

Yes “under”. So not in contact with the physical grime of life.

I assume that you don't understand "laicity"?

I do, I have lived in France. But bringing about rules to exclude Muslim women is utterly shit.

BillieWiper · 28/06/2026 21:23

SweepSqueaks · 28/06/2026 00:06

But that’s not likely to happen. Most women wouldn’t pop to the supermarket in just their bikini in the morning, sit on a park bench and have a coffee in their bikini then get the bus to the pool in the afternoon in their bikini.

I wear my bikini in place of undies in hot countries on holiday if I'm having access to a pool or beach.
So bikini plus a vest and little shorts.
So it would be the same thing all day.

If we went out at night I'd change into a dress or something and knickers but I wouldn't ever wear a bra in the heat.

nomas · 28/06/2026 19:40

So to the elbow is fine but to the wrist is banned because of Muslims.

What utter tossers the French authorities are.

I live In Italy and swimming hats are mandatory in public pools even if you are bald but hotels and some outdoor water parks don't enforce this rule. My local water park has the rule that as it's knee deep water you don't, but if you want to put your head under then you must wear a cap. I went to this one recently in Milan and they insisted on one for eveyone.

I did a pool plant room training course years ago, as there was a chlorinated fountain in a garden I worked at I had to manage rather than a swimming pool, but reducing as much organic matter as possible makes it run more efficiently and hygienic. Chlorine is used up far faster when there's lots of organic residue in a pool so it's less effective as day goes on, so ppl are likelier to get ill from bacteria, and it's also much more expensive as the pool owner is having to dump huge amounts of water and chlorinate fresh water. When chlorine combines with organic matter the only way to reduce it from the pool is to dump it, once it's combined with the nitrogen based contaminants (sweat, urine etc) it's useless and can be harmful if too high.

So shorts worn all day, skin not showered BEFORE entering the pool, sun tan lotion, sweat etc etc all adds up and a pool with a heavy bather load is expensive to run and if not managed well can be dangerously dirty quickly.

Monvelo · 28/06/2026 20:21

Ohhh to the Austrian sauna rules!!!! Didn't know that!!

rainuntilseptember · 28/06/2026 20:17

Any rules for French beaches?

ChristmasCwtch · 28/06/2026 20:08

Just ewwww at the thought of any of the men I work with or dads from school in speedos 😂 They really should be left to the Olympic swimmers!!

My husband always has 'skid' marks on his underpants at the end of the day 🤮 I don't thin̈k that my underwear has ever had any skidmarks on them...

Does he not know how to wipe his arse properly?? Tell him to do a better job, and eat some fibre so he’s not shitting playdoh. You shouldnt be washing shit-stained undies for a grown man.

Livingthebestlife · 28/06/2026 19:58

Omg what a weirdo rule. What does wearing those god awful hilarious tight things going to achieve? So is it only for men to wear tight clothing or do women have to wear tight swimwear ? I love a shortish loose swim short myself. Am shocked about the rules on clothing length too, what on earth 😲 it all seems a bit draconian to me.

LouiseK93 · 28/06/2026 19:56

Incase a bollock slips out into someone's face perhaps? 😆

forgivingfiggy · 28/06/2026 19:52

Surely it’s so pool water doesn’t flow through the shorts, swilling out bum holes, peepees and dislodging pubes and carrying it back into the water. Tight swimwear does encourage the same through flow.

We just came back from France, we didn't stay on a campsite but we visited a water park. DH wore his regular loose swim shorts, DS was in shorts and a rash vest. Nobody said anything about their clothing and I didnt think they stood out in any way.

I’m not sure if there were any women in Muslim clothes, I wasn’t paying attention. But I remember seeing signs that showed long sleeved tops and full length trousers were not allowed. Elbow length tops and knee length trousers were ok.

Just to note, we weren’t trying to break the rules, we had no idea pools in France have these rules.

Or even a downslide.

You can buy anti- uv swimsuits in many colours other than black.

I must have missed where she said her swim outfits are black.

IrrationalIvy · 28/06/2026 19:14

I have a bit of a phobia of swimming pools, just the thought that the water I’m swimming in has sloshed around the armpits, arse and crotch of a load of strangers with unknown hygiene standards before splashing in my face, regardless of whether the poo particles, pubes and other bits and bobs have been chlorinated or not. I’d be delighted if everyone had to scrub up and wear tight fitting suits & swim caps.

Sanch1 · 28/06/2026 18:27

Sidebeforeself · 28/06/2026 17:17

I disagree. I think many women do wear a bikini all day under shorts and t-shits etc.

Yes but they take the outer clothes off before getting in a swimming pool! Men go around all day in their board shorts then just get in the pool in them along with whatever grime they’ve picked up from whatever surfaces they sat on/rubbed against 🤢

Single50something · 28/06/2026 18:06

Good post. We go to france every year and every year see the life guard politely asking English people to wear correct trunks. Women always have tight to body clothing so not sure why the men fuss quite so much :(

angelos02 · 28/06/2026 18:00

Well they're the rules in their country so that's the end of it.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 28/06/2026 17:58

Flamingojune · 27/06/2026 23:55

Why would that be a problem

Because of all the grime from public transport etc.
