To think we need to start talking about the lack of jobs?

This is prompted by quite a few threads I have read recently, from parents of young people looking for jobs or posters themselves struggling with finding a job.

I feel like a lot of responses are completely out of touch and people are not aware how hard it is right now. There are no “supermarket jobs” etc that you can just pick up.

I think this is having a particularly significant impact on school leavers and graduates looking for their first full time job, students wanting part time work and also anyone over 50 who suddenly finds themselves unemployed.

Because British people think these jobs are below them. And don’t want to work for minimum wage. They’d rather whine about it and take UC.

Good luck to those who decide to take on these jobs, they deserve to have them.

This is such rubbish. There is a food chain that doesn’t use Deliveroo drivers they employ local young adults and train them on foh. Everyone shops there to support their initiative.

young people are begging for the opportunity to work. Yes, sure some don’t. Especially those who come from families of low expectations or long term unemployment but most young peope want the freedom that money brings. They don’t care about it being in fast food etc. it’s not the early 2000s. The approach to minimum wages and food service work has changed. A lot.

Two of my kids are employers.

One will hire young people seasonally, they either don't apply or if he takes them on don't turn up at weekends because they're hungover or meeting friends.

The other requires Bsc applicants in his field. They want to work in cities, not towns.

Do you think the employees in India are earning the equivalent of the British minimum wage ?

What a silly thing to say! Why are you targeting one race?

I think she's talking about Indian call centres which are in the majority.

I’ve not noticed a huge lack of jobs. What I have seen is a whole cohort who are expecting to walk into a £30k job on day one. The entitlement is real.

It might be "entitled" to expect that sort of starting salary if the housing, energy and cost of living crises had never happened. But they have, and if they'd happened to you when you were in your early twenties, with the underlying message now being 'things will only get worse', I expect you'd have felt 'entitled' too 🙄

It's the same in a lot of areas, where we are a huge number of retail and food businesses seem to have changed from having ethnically diverse staff to having all Indian staff. There has been a big rise in net migration from India generally, but I suppose those jobs must be mostly international students as I don't think they could get a work visa to do them. I know at one point at least there was an issue with fake colleges being used for visas but I don't know if that's still going on or if it was cracked down on.

It’s so weird I live in an extremely diverse area and I’d say Indian is probably one of the lower numbers of races in the area but every single shop except for small owner staffed businesses has only Indian staff. Any small, midsized or big chain is only staffed by one race.

noticing that isn’t about racism, it’s actually strange if you don’t notice. I’ve never noticed the racial make up of shop staff before

It’s not racist to state fact - India has taken over a lot of our customer service jobs. What is racist is British companies moving their jobs to India because labour is cheaper.

We just get fed so many narratives. On the one hand we have less children being born and an aging population so are heading towards a shortfall in workers, usually said to justify the need for immigration. . And on the other hand we’re being told that there will be less jobs due to AI and the increase in NMW.

It’s not that its one person getting, and then helping their mates get on and/or manufacturing issue to get people out then getting your mates in. Similar pattern across different sectors. Not saying this is all, but it’s been noted as common pattern in a few work places unfortunately.

i think a lot more stories will
start coming out in the next year or so. In the lot of cities almost all retail roles are occupied by them. Its a bit bizarre actually.

Occupied by THEM?

Wow.

Meadowfinch · 27/06/2026 23:32

I think we may just be lucky. I was made redundant, August 2024, aged 61 and had a new full time marketing manager role (£50k-ish) within 7 weeks.
Ds17 started looking for a Saturday job as a pool lifeguard in July last year and was employed in August. He was getting a bit low because he'd been ignored by a few people but I kept encouraging him to keep asking, and it worked. I checked with reception as we were leaving after a swim, and was told of a vacancy in the same group, next town.

It's tough out there but focus on your skills, be persistent and keep asking. Take anything to get through the door.

Yet the government are complaining about people being on benefits and wanting disabled people to find jobs. There's something really badly wrong with how things are now. I can't believe it's by accident either. Why are they allowing so many migrants in when there's no jobs? Are they all just doing deliveroo or something.

They aren’t immigration is down to 1/5 of what it was 2 years ago. But people are already here and Boris was letting in 1m people a year ffs.

I went into a McD’s in a little town in Surrey today. All customers were white, all staff were Indian.

Once you start to notice it it’s difficult not to.

I think international student visas have been abused.

IDontHateRainbows · 27/06/2026 23:29

I work in HR and what's becoming common now is what i call 'attrition restructuring ' where rather than made redundancies you wait for people to leave and see how the work can be done with fewer people. Ironically I'm not free of this myself having had to shrink my team after resignations and now 2 of us doing the work of 5.

It's happening in a lot of places. Especially with AI in the mix.

Chubbychubber · 27/06/2026 23:28

The few supermarket jobs I see are either zero hour or 12 hours a week or very part time.
The only full time jobs in abundance seems to be care work at the minimum wage - working in care homes run and owned by huge conglomerates charging residents £1500 per week. Absolute piss take.
There is a serious lack of well paid jobs.
£24k seems to be top dollar around here!

You’re very lucky to get paid that much. I just had a quick glance at car park stewarding roles. Some don’t mention a rate, some are min wage. The highest hourly rate I saw was £16. The lowest £12.04 which is actually below minimum wage.

£15 is the basic, £30 is only on double time days. It’s the same salary the company offers across the country to everyone age 16 or 65.

So Bresit and Austerity and 16 years of Tory government had no impact ?

People are talking about it! There was a hugely consequential report published by Alan Milburn just a few weeks ago.

But the emphasis of that 'report' was on looking at the behaviour of young people around education, employment and training. The emphasis wasn't on job creation. They can tell us what the problem is but they're woefully short on real, long-term solutions 🤷🏻‍♂️

Spiffingdarling88 · 27/06/2026 23:20

My son (17) has just got his first part time job. He has applied and handed cvs out over the last year and easily applied for 500 jobs.

He has done free trials in restaurants, pot washing etc. Employers have been rude by not even having the decency to say he hasn't got the job. There has been lots of competition (15 people over 3 days pot washing, 600 applications for farmfoods etc). Its been awful.

Im so glad he has been resilient as his confidence was getting a knock. I honestly dont think people understand how difficult it is for them.

It will get even worst with Labour bringing in "work experience" for under 24s on UC.

My son volunteered at a charity shop since 14 and has struggled so much, with the influx of young people made to get experience, they will struggle even more.

mrsmacmc · 27/06/2026 23:19

The introduction of self scan tills in supermarkets etc have definitely dropped the number of opportunities for YP (under 18) in retail along with covering all areas of store as the norm rather than the exception.

If she's tried to get into care work and hasn't managed to, there's something wrong with her application.
There's always care work.

That's what I thought. I used to do care work myself.
But the job centre have given her mentoring, and reckon her cv (for someone without employment history) is decent.
They also keep sending her on interview technique courses, which'd be great if she could actually get an interview.
It was especially galling when one of the care companies that she tried to get into, featured on the local news, advocating for more immigration because they couldn't recruit....
Something appears very very broken.

I've noticed the same in Devon. Fast food places like McDonald's and KFC and supermarkets are predominantly staffed by people from India. I would say it's been a noticeable change in the last 3-6 months.

Same in Catford and Sydenham in SE London. Maybe a few white workers like security.
