Feeling ashamed after blacking out from alcohol

Sunnny6 · 27/06/2026 05:18

Yesterday I went for drinks with a friend of mine in the afternoon. I got home to my family early evening and I have memory loss. I had 4 glasses of wine and I don’t drink often.

I now feel completely ashamed of myself. Worried about how I have acted and what I have said and done, both at home and whilst out. I’ve literally blacked out.

This isn’t really an AIBU but I really need some moral support. I feel like I just can’t drink. Is 4 glasses of wine excessive? They weren’t large glasses or anything.

Wine does the same to me! After three I forget things… forget what I’ve said, how I got home etc!

OP, be kind to yourself. Most of us have done this at some point in our lives (I certainly have and I know plenty of friends, family and colleagues that have too). Alcohol makes us feel anxious the next day (hanxiety). It's normal to feel anxious especially when you can't remember. Chalk it up to one of those things. You got home safe and you didn't do anything terrible - you just drank a bit more than you could handle and feel embarrassed. You will be more careful next time. It's not a huge amount to drink but sometimes what we've eaten, our hormones/time of the month, sleep, how quickly we've consumed it etc can contribute to how alcohol affects us. You will feel much better tomorrow.

I’m the same with wine and four glasses would do that for me. Blacked out last time I drank it and I’ve never drank it since. You’ve probably got a bit of hanxiety going on. Don’t feel too ashamed, you didn’t harm anyone. Just don’t drink wine again.

If they weren't large glasses, 4 standard single unit glasses is 4/6 or 2/3 of a bottle of wine. It's substantial but not enough to blackout.

"Large" is relative though to what you would drink normally and see as large.

If they were big glasses, 4 glasses can easily be a bottle of wine +.

If they were really standard glasses of single units, then I would be worrying about whether your drink had been spiked.

A 125ml glass is more like 1.5 units, as a bottle is usually 8-10 units total.

How strong was the wine? Had you eaten, was it really hot and how much do you drink normally? Lots of things can affect how drunk you get on any particular occasion. Four standard glasses of wine over three hours in normal circumstances I wouldn't expect most people to be falling down drunk, but now you know, take it a bit slower another time and consider all the circumstances.

omghereistrouble · 27/06/2026 13:13

the heat does not help but you know now that stop at 2 maybe 3 glasses.
make sure that you have food to mop it up!

Cannedlaughter · 27/06/2026 13:03

Don’t feel ashamed. It happened, it’s happened to many of us once in our life time.
The heat won’t have helped , you were probably dehydrated and the wine affected you more than it usually would.
just send an oops text and laugh about it.

ARingtoit · 27/06/2026 12:56

A reminder of your limits. It was also very hot. Don't beat yourself up. Next time have a glass of wine followed by a soft drink.

SliceofTosst · 27/06/2026 12:53

Don't be ashamed. Most of us have been there. Remember other people were drinking too and probably some more drunk than they usually get. Very unlikely you did anything embarrassing and got home OK.

I do feel for you though as I have been there.

Also there's a whole weekend for everyone there to do things which will be more prominent in their minds than yesterday's event.

Was the friend male or female? Could the friend have been topping up your glass so you’ve had more than you thought?

DNLove · 27/06/2026 12:37

So many women think they can go on a session and drink wine all day. Wine is circa 13% vs a beer which is 4% or even spirits that you can dilute as required with a mixer. Wine is for sofa or with meal, not for extended drink. Most women who drink wine for extended periods of time end up a bit of a mess.
That said 4 glasses of wine, which would be one bottle shouldn't really have you black out unless you weigh about 45kg.

Blackcatahotcat · 27/06/2026 12:36

Some wines have a high abv. Plus it was very hot and humid so you were probably already dehydrated. Take it easy today but in future make sure you’ve eaten and drunk plenty of water before you drink wine x

Sunnny6 · 27/06/2026 05:40

Yes - I mean memory loss. I had the four drinks over about 3 hours.

I don't know why you're asking if it's excessive?

Everything you've said makes it obvious that for you, it is.

GoFigure235 · 27/06/2026 12:31

I want a glass of ice cold white wine now. Suppose it's a bit too early really.

I'd love to drink 4 glasses but I've hugely reduced my drinking since being woken the next morning with a hangover at 6am by young children is no fun.

You drank a bit too much for you. It's not the crime of the century. Apologise to your host/friends and forget about it.

3luckystars · 27/06/2026 11:21

That happens to me with very little alcohol and that’s why I don’t drink it anymore.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 27/06/2026 11:20

One of my friends told me she couldn’t remember a thing and it was so weird because she looked totally normal all night. So I’m saying you could have been acting normally just can’t remember

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 27/06/2026 11:17

Most of my late teens to early 20s is one big blackout.

Sunnny6 · 27/06/2026 06:01

I feel really ashamed of myself.

Why?

You got a bit pissed, and now you've forgotten parts of the day.

I'd say that's an experience that at least half of the adult population of the UK has had at least once or twice in their lives.

Yes, you may have said something stupid or been a bit loud and lairy, but again, not exactly an uncommon experience. And given that you were drinking with friends, they were likely too drunk to notice as well. You may even have been absolutely fine.

What you're feeling this morning is fairly common as well, it's called beer fear, alcohol makes some people anxious the next day. It'll fade.

You don't like it, so treat it as a learning experience and don't drink that much on a hot day next time.

Job done.

Gallowayan · 27/06/2026 10:41

Glasses of wine are large nowadays and wine is stronger. Four would be a lot if you dont drink often as you have not built up a tolerance for it. For comparison, I know someone who gets smashed of one small glass. Its not the end of the world. Learn from it and move on.

TigTails · 27/06/2026 10:31

Well remember the shame and think about it next time you’re tempted to drink too much.

yellowpinksky · 27/06/2026 08:30

This is the beer fear talking. I get it terribly, hence I hardly drink anymore- can't deal with the anxiety.

saveforthat · 27/06/2026 08:13

Drinking in the afternoon affects me much more than Drinking in the evening and it's so hot. Try not to worry too much.

Turtlestarfish · 27/06/2026 08:06

Don’t see how this is relevant other than to try and make the OP shit.
