Leaving kids for 5 minute late night walk?

Husband and wife went out for a quick walk an hour ago whilst kids were sleeping (3 and 5). Gone for just over five minutes. Unreasonable or not?

You said you wouldnt leave them upstairs alone

Well, with cameras, speakers and me listening, they're not alone are they. I don't like the pedantic game.

Well, I'm in the house so I wouldn't leave them where I couldn't hear them or be aware of their movements etc. I'd have gates at the stairs, top and bottom, and can hear their feet so make sure they're not roaming. Also, there are those speaker things so I can listen in, cameras etc. Lots of ways to supervise but all of it useless if I'm not in the house.

So what do you do? No guests of an evening or expect them to come in your bedroom? And adult dinner and glass of wine on the landing?

I wouldn't leave them upstairs on their own at that age. Accidents happen quick.

Kids can die in their homes from accidental injuries in less than 5 mins

5 min it’s fine in my opinion. We spent much longer in the garden while the kids sleep inside. But where did they go for 5 min? Too short to actually go anywhere

AutumnAllTheWay · 27/06/2026 23:57

Does that mean you should never go to sleep?

Sorry that happened to you, must've been awful

No, what a bizarre question?!

LiveTheDream8998 · 28/06/2026 07:45

I don't understand the context:

  1. Are you the husband or wife? I'd absolutely suggest you do not leave your children home alone at that age regardless of whether you plan to be 5 minutes or not- even when they are sleeping.

  2. Are you a neighbour? How can you be sure this happened? Was there not another adult in the house you're not aware of? I think you need all the facts before taking any actions.

  3. I can't think of anywhere I'd go to for just 5 minutes if it meant leaving my children at home by themselves. They're too precious to me.

  4. Final point. Don't leave your kids home alone. They need supervision and security at all times. 🙂

You are wrong! This happened to us. You couldn’t see inside our home within minutes. The investigators told us that electrical fires, although not common, do happen often. In our case a faulty light switch which was only wired in 3 years previously.

Luckily we were all fine because it was the day time. Had we been sleeping, we would have been overcome with smoke.

AutumnAllTheWay · 27/06/2026 08:38

Completely disagree

The chances of any of that happening in 2 minutes are so miniscule that they are impossible

That could happen to a 12 year old or a 36 year old too if what youre saying is correct, guess we should just keep someone on watch the whole night then?

Soupsavior · 27/06/2026 16:55

I don't know how you could be sure they were left alone, surely you're not watching their house from both sides all the time to see if they have guests or if the children are away for the night? Also if you've seen one of the children sat on the sill with the window open, you need to say something to them, have you?

Extremely unlikely things happen to people everyday

They do, but we don’t stop doing things, even unnecessary things, just because there’s a negligible risk.

Every time you walk down the street there’s a chance a car will plough into you and kill you. I could find many cases where that’s happened if I trawled the internet. But we don’t stop going out because of it.

So, yes, there’s a risk of a fire starting in the building in the five minutes you’re out, but you take bigger risks every single day with your children every time you leave the house with them. We need to have some perspective here.

I’m not saying it’s right, and the bigger risk is that they hurt themselves or even just get upset if they happen to wake.

AChickenNamedDoris · 27/06/2026 16:23

No judgement, it's done now and what's done is done. Luckily no harm came to them. But I definitely wouldn't do it again.

Unfit parents. They could have taken turns. Poor kids.

AutumnAllTheWay · 27/06/2026 16:08

Has everyone read the thread???

The op lives a way away from this family and saw them going out for 5 mins.

She has no idea if there was another adult in the house and sounds a bit judgey.

So we may well be debating a non event here.

Pobey · 27/06/2026 15:59

Justveryveryangry · 27/06/2026 15:18

The chances of a catastrophic fire taking place in the five minutes you are out is literally than one-in-a-billion. You place your child in far more “danger” every day without thinking about it. Yes, it’s not great parenting, but the reaction on this thread is WAY WAY over the top.

It was to walk an animal. That had been walked already twice today. I wondered if I was being overly pearl clutchy in finding it a bit worrying…

Why did it take the pair of them?

Daftypants · 27/06/2026 15:50

Not acceptable to leave children of that age alone at all.
Their pet could be walked by one of the adults not both

Dogmum6 · 27/06/2026 15:50

OneOliveOtter · 26/06/2026 23:39

Huge garden so they didn’t need to take it out if it needed a wee etc. The children’s windows are open (it’s still very hot here!) not on latches and I was worried about what would happen if they woke if they fell out. One of the children has sat on the window sill previously with the window wide open.

Sorry I would never leave the window off the latch either. Again total pain in bum in terms of heat but just not worth the risk. Under 13 means latch on always if kids are in the house in my mind.

Harry12345 · 27/06/2026 15:37

For 5 mins I don’t find it bad, they could be out the garden longer

Thechaseison71 · 27/06/2026 15:23

Pobey · 27/06/2026 14:27

5 min walk - what is the point? Why not sit in the garden with a drink/picnic for an hour? Or book a babysitter and go out once a week?

I just don’t think the risk is at all worth it. My brother’s neighbour house went up in flames due to a faulty charging battery. They only JUST had time to get all the kids and pets out.

And if fire happened while you were asleep or down the end of the garden or in the bath?

Justveryveryangry · 27/06/2026 15:20

mrswithkidsx · 27/06/2026 14:14

Absolutely unreasonable you can’t just leave your kids because you feel like you need to have a walk and we all know it was more than 5 minutes. Never, EVER leave them alone at that age if something happened you’d never forgive yourselves and if child services find out, you will lose your children. Take a walk with the kids.

If you think Social Services would remove your kids because you took a five minute walk, you are completely clueless. I’m not saying it’s right, just that the bar for SS intervention is way higher!

Why did they both go. One at a time. Or let the pet out into the garden. They’re dicks
