Should I ask my neighbours if we can have designated times to sit in the garden?

I will preface by saying that it is possible this heatwave has affected my rational thinking. So I will bite- I am so sick of listening to my neighbours having their dinner in the garden and having to listen to their booming voices for hours on end. It has reached the stage where we feel relegated indoors, especially in the evenings.

We live in a new build in close proximity to our neighbours so can hear everything as you can imagine. They are a couple in their early 30's (I think), no kids. The man with the booming voice works from home and has taken to working from his garden throughout the day, often vaping. My kids are off school, trying to make the best of the time off and I really don't think they should have to hear the details of his teams meetings. Surely he should work inside and allow people peaceful enjoyment of their gardens? I have never worked from home, but wouldn't it be considered a GDPR breach if others can hear?

They have had friends over for BBQs the previous 2 nights and have been sitting outside chatting until around 9pm. The BBQ smell lingered for so long and of course they were all vaping and drinking alcohol. One of their friends was regaling them with tales of her dating escapades-hardly an appropriate topic for my 9 year old to have in earshot. I also don't want my kids damaging their lungs inhaling all of those disgusting vape particles. The women have also been prancing around in very skimpy bikinis. I know women are entitled to wear what they want, but come on-all the neighbours can see if they look outside their upstairs windows! I'm also concerned as yesterday, the visiting friends were there for several hours and appeared to drive themselves home- were they over the limit?

On both occasions, I have brought my kids inside, as I don't want them to hear the sordid details of their conversations. I also feel awkward that they are only a few metres away from me, so I don't want to have my dinner outside in case they listen to our conversation. Would I be unreasonable to pop over or post a note through their door requesting that we have an outdoor mealtime rota so we can all enjoy our gardens in peace-as we are entitled to?

I had to take some time away from this thread as it's quite disturbing how many people have made assumptions about me and my DH. People have insinuated that I'm some sort of evil witch who is full of spite and envy. The reality is that this is a family road and my husband and I (and other normal families on the road) have a zero tolerance policy regarding obnoxious loutish behaviour that has the potential to ruin our children's childhoods. It won't be tolerated. If they don't like it, they can move somewhere else where singletons and other party animals live. Thank you to the few people who have shown me some empathy.

All has been relatively quiet by their standards in the past week, but the same friends have now arrived with a couple of others.....They're sitting in the garden in their England shirts like football hooligans and drinking alcohol on a Sunday night 😭.

Must be a hoax thread. Nobody is actually this ridiculous

Ive been away from this thread for a few days myself and just catching up. OP sounds like an absolutely unhinged snob. Bikini banning, ICO, LinkedIn stalking, squarking voices, pink hair, ..... it's just all so farcical. I'm imagining Margot from The Good Life or Alan Bennett's Lady of Letters. Either that or she's going for Legendary Thread status.

Apologies, I wasn't expecting to have so many responses, I can't quite understand all of the vitriol, but there we go, that's Mumsnet for you! It seems that several others are having similar issues to me in this heatwave.

Male or female, I personally think it is unsavoury to parade -or prance- around ones garden in clothing that represents undergarments. The garden in a residential area is a place where you can be seen by anybody quite easily from the upstairs windows. I would react in the same manner if a bloke was sporting a Speedo.

more people see you on the beach...................

OP you are sliding into stalking behaviour. Please stop monitoring your neighbours or this could go very badly for you. If nothing else, think about what an ugly dispute with your neighbours will mean for you if you ever want to sell your house. You'll have to declare it and that makes a house virtually unsellable. The fact that you are even considering contacting someone's employer to torpedo his career is deeply concerning. I am actually worried for your mental health. This is starting to sound like an obsessive disorder. Or a Netflix true-crime documentary.

Giving the vibe of Baby Reindeer!

Fizzybluewater · 29/06/2026 12:44

I find it hard to understand why Op is so entrenched in the idea that she is being reasonable and right, when she is clearly having problems.
Is her h similar or does he let her ramble on just to keep the peace and what about her kids living with this strange obsessive behaviour?

YorksMa · 29/06/2026 12:38

Guarddogdaschunds · 27/06/2026 15:13

We're not going to contact his employer or the ICO at this point, I'm not a vindictive person! We are just gathering evidence and starting to make a note of dates etc in case the situation escalates or if we need to contact the council about their behaviour/the noise.

You’ve said there the same age as you but you sound like you’re in your 50’s and incredibly entitled. I get the noise might irritate you, sure, but your husband ‘imposing ground rules’ blimey, you’re not their parents ffs! Personally I’d rather listen to peoples drunken conversations and such, far more entertaining than kids playing 😖
maybe look at why you’re judging them so much, what they wear, what they do, how they socialise, how they work etc and work in that. Just because you don’t like them, doesn’t mean you’re right! And as for what they wear, none of your business

(Lightheartedly) Some of us are in our 50s but still understand that having fun with mates in the garden is perfectly normal. We even wear bikinis despite being geriatric 😆

Wtafdidido · 29/06/2026 11:10

Oh dear God those poor neighbours! If you came near me with your shitty demands and vile attitude I would laugh you off my property and then go out of my way to use my garden as much as possible and make as much noise just under the limit of legally acceptable as I could. Your time would be best spent getting some therapy for yourself or better yet move. Far far away from other humans.

Chocolattecoffeecup · 29/06/2026 10:53

OP I wouldn't recommend going over there with "ground rules". You can see the most people on this thread think you're being OTT and they will do the same and dismiss you. Perhaps just ask that they please keep their voices low as you have young children in the garden but understand that you can't really expect them to listen. If they think you're being a nice neighbour then they're more likely to respond in kind.

RunningJo · 29/06/2026 10:16

I can only imagine my husband’s face if anyone popped over to talk about garden rules 😂

I do think some people, often women, struggle with jealousy and it manifests itself as spite.

i think that’s what we are seeing here. This is clearly about the female neighbour who the op perceives to be attractive, more attractive than her, and who clearly has friends and seems fun, and it’s made the op venomous.

Hard agree.

Cloudconfusion · 29/06/2026 08:32

NeedWineNow · 28/06/2026 20:35

Quite honestly OP, you sound absolutely vile. What a nasty bitchy person you are.

I love how everyone assumes that I'm jealous/envious of her. Without commenting on who is objectively better looking, my DH prefers natural women with more class. I'm certain that she has had some Botox and has definitely had breast implants. She also had pink hair for a period of time! So no, I'm not worried about furtive glances from my DH.

This thread has to be a joke Mrs Bucket ( bouquet )

Lexy2345 · 28/06/2026 18:16

What's wrong with pink hair?
Trampolines aren't antisocial, they are a great way for kids to get regular exercise and to make friends.
Are you peeved that your neighbours have a good friendship group and a better social life than you?

You don't sound like a very happy person if the only way you can elevate yourself is by making derogatory remarks about other people.

Fizzybluewater · 28/06/2026 17:02

I thought I could be bitchy but OP takes the gold standard for the comment about botox and inplants. You really are the gift that keeps on giving, although I don't believe a word you've said OP it's amusing to play along with the bat shittery.
OP needs an inplant - of a decent personality because to my mind something I might stand in on a hot day on the pavement has more class.
I wonder if h is as mad as her?

Gloriia · 28/06/2026 12:42

What has happened to you in the past op? Your bitterness and resentment is so palpable. How do you know if she has had botox have you ever had a conversation with her and seen her up close?!

If I were you I'd forget the neighbours and maybe try some counselling to find the cause of all this judging and anxiety. Were you overlooked a lot as a child perhaps?

I agree with all this.
OP, your fixation on this neighbour is not normal.

Yup jealous, you’re paying close attention to her face and body, and you immediately start with will your husband fancy her.

jealous and insecure.

So now you're commenting on people's appearance. My snob bingo card is nearly full, can you please add the word that starts with C and rhymes with 'have' so I can call House!?

Jeschara · 28/06/2026 09:48

What a vile person you are. If your husband came round to me to me tryng to impose ground rules I would tell him to Fuck off and stop being a busybody.

You are a spiteful jealous woman with too much time on your hands, how dare you discuss a woman wearing a bikini in her own space. You do not get to dictate.

You are the type of woman who only gets on with people who agree with you. Go on try and impose your rules and see what happens. At best you will be laughed at, but worse you cause bad feeling with the neibours. You cannot impose your petty silly ways on other people.

Thank God I don't live next door to you. Don't be the silly cow next door.

youngwhippersnapper · 28/06/2026 09:46

You sound deeply unpleasant,OP

Bikenutz · 28/06/2026 09:34

Your neighbours can wear and do what they want within the confines of the law - it’s their private property.

But they genuinely don’t appreciate how irritating their behaviour is to others around them.

Next time he’s in the garden on a teams call, play some music. Not too loud. Just enough to disrupt his concentration. He will get the message quickly.
