Should I ask my neighbours if we can have designated times to sit in the garden?

I will preface by saying that it is possible this heatwave has affected my rational thinking. So I will bite- I am so sick of listening to my neighbours having their dinner in the garden and having to listen to their booming voices for hours on end. It has reached the stage where we feel relegated indoors, especially in the evenings.

We live in a new build in close proximity to our neighbours so can hear everything as you can imagine. They are a couple in their early 30's (I think), no kids. The man with the booming voice works from home and has taken to working from his garden throughout the day, often vaping. My kids are off school, trying to make the best of the time off and I really don't think they should have to hear the details of his teams meetings. Surely he should work inside and allow people peaceful enjoyment of their gardens? I have never worked from home, but wouldn't it be considered a GDPR breach if others can hear?

They have had friends over for BBQs the previous 2 nights and have been sitting outside chatting until around 9pm. The BBQ smell lingered for so long and of course they were all vaping and drinking alcohol. One of their friends was regaling them with tales of her dating escapades-hardly an appropriate topic for my 9 year old to have in earshot. I also don't want my kids damaging their lungs inhaling all of those disgusting vape particles. The women have also been prancing around in very skimpy bikinis. I know women are entitled to wear what they want, but come on-all the neighbours can see if they look outside their upstairs windows! I'm also concerned as yesterday, the visiting friends were there for several hours and appeared to drive themselves home- were they over the limit?

On both occasions, I have brought my kids inside, as I don't want them to hear the sordid details of their conversations. I also feel awkward that they are only a few metres away from me, so I don't want to have my dinner outside in case they listen to our conversation. Would I be unreasonable to pop over or post a note through their door requesting that we have an outdoor mealtime rota so we can all enjoy our gardens in peace-as we are entitled to?

Hooligans !!! Sorry I just can’t 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 heh England we are all Hooooooooligans 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck...They sound like hooligans and are behaving like hooligans with their beers when everyone has to be up for work and school tomorrow! I have no idea why this behaviour is being normalised at the moment, how do they expect my children to sleep tonight?

I would be DELIGHTED if they stayed there ALL NIGHT and the game went to extra time and penalties
I think it would be HILARIOUS if you complained to the neighbours work place only to be cut to the quick when the boss announces that they also attended said party as a bikini prancer...

Swimbea · 05/07/2026 23:04

This is why my nearest neighbours are 1/4 of a mile away 😅 i'd sooner top myself than have neighbours that close, DH feels the same.

somanychristmaslights · 05/07/2026 23:02

My god Op, you sound even more insane with each post!!

Wadsworthy · 05/07/2026 23:01

So pleased I live in a very tall townhouse where I don't see or hear my neighbours.

YABU.

I had to take some time away from this thread as it's quite disturbing how many people have made assumptions about me and my DH. People have insinuated that I'm some sort of evil witch who is full of spite and envy. The reality is that this is a family road and my husband and I (and other normal families on the road) have a zero tolerance policy regarding obnoxious loutish behaviour that has the potential to ruin our children's childhoods. It won't be tolerated. If they don't like it, they can move somewhere else where singletons and other party animals live. Thank you to the few people who have shown me some empathy.

All has been relatively quiet by their standards in the past week, but the same friends have now arrived with a couple of others.....They're sitting in the garden in their England shirts like football hooligans and drinking alcohol on a Sunday night 😭.

Ohh, look out everyone. We have a badass over here. 🙄

Empress13 · 05/07/2026 22:59

@Guarddogdaschundsi suggest you and your DH and kids go and find a 🏝️ to live on In peace away from the hooligans !

This is hilarious. You are insane OP 😆

GardenCovent · 05/07/2026 22:27

I’m actually hoping the thunderstorms in Mexico push back the kick off, it then goes to extra time and penalties so they are out there all night after that update

Thesafetygeneral · 05/07/2026 22:09

I’m sorry this is bothering you but you sounds completely unreasonable. You can’t expect people to not wear a bikini / swimming cossie in their own garden or to have friends over.
by all means, if it gets late you can ask them to keep the noise down a bit.
I think you’ll find that most British people will be supporting the England football team tonight so you’ll be in for the long haul tonight.
you cannot dictate to your neighbours what they can and can’t do in their own garden. You should have chosen a house with a bigger garden or somewhere more remote if you don’t like being so close to people

Well, she'll give their work something to laugh about for days.

They’ll be the most popular people in the workplace. All their colleagues will be angling for an invitation.

Cloudconfusion · 05/07/2026 21:45

She’s going to contact their work and tell them they wore England shirts, had their mates round and ,,,shock, drank alcohol on a Sunday night and it’s ruining her kids childhood.😂

oh and they bbq’d in the hot weather and the women wore bikinis…and they have friends!

Well, she'll give their work something to laugh about for days.

coolcahuna · 05/07/2026 21:57

You can't ask for a rota but I wanted to say I feel your pain! Our neighbours are very irritating
...to be fair its not all the time but think friends over till late, loud conversations all evening when you can hear every last cringe word, arguments, screaming kids etc. We just crack on in our garden as best we can, put music on.. I'm sure we are also annoying at times ! Just let your kids play and make noise, might stop the teams calls at least!

RunningJo · 05/07/2026 21:56

Your update OP, what on earth have I just read

Growlybear83 · 05/07/2026 21:55

Of course there’s the possibility that the match may get delayed by the storms that are forecast, or if it goes to extra time 🤣🤣🤣

I hope it goes to penalties now 😂

Sofiacalling · 05/07/2026 21:56

I am sort of hoping they have an
all night party the OP will have something to complain about

The game ends about 3.00am. You’re going to be apoplectic by then @Guarddogdaschunds. I look forward to future posts.

This is probably a wind up. Can I ask a favour, keep it going it's amusing me.
I am watching the Brazil Norway match. I might even have a drink. I know shocking on a Sunday.

I think it’s you that’s disturbing! Carry on with what you are doing, if it helps you sleep at night. In the real world going to the council, the man’s job etc won’t help with anything and he won’t face consequences, so please get a life!
