Should I ask my neighbours if we can have designated times to sit in the garden?

I will preface by saying that it is possible this heatwave has affected my rational thinking. So I will bite- I am so sick of listening to my neighbours having their dinner in the garden and having to listen to their booming voices for hours on end. It has reached the stage where we feel relegated indoors, especially in the evenings.

We live in a new build in close proximity to our neighbours so can hear everything as you can imagine. They are a couple in their early 30's (I think), no kids. The man with the booming voice works from home and has taken to working from his garden throughout the day, often vaping. My kids are off school, trying to make the best of the time off and I really don't think they should have to hear the details of his teams meetings. Surely he should work inside and allow people peaceful enjoyment of their gardens? I have never worked from home, but wouldn't it be considered a GDPR breach if others can hear?

They have had friends over for BBQs the previous 2 nights and have been sitting outside chatting until around 9pm. The BBQ smell lingered for so long and of course they were all vaping and drinking alcohol. One of their friends was regaling them with tales of her dating escapades-hardly an appropriate topic for my 9 year old to have in earshot. I also don't want my kids damaging their lungs inhaling all of those disgusting vape particles. The women have also been prancing around in very skimpy bikinis. I know women are entitled to wear what they want, but come on-all the neighbours can see if they look outside their upstairs windows! I'm also concerned as yesterday, the visiting friends were there for several hours and appeared to drive themselves home- were they over the limit?

On both occasions, I have brought my kids inside, as I don't want them to hear the sordid details of their conversations. I also feel awkward that they are only a few metres away from me, so I don't want to have my dinner outside in case they listen to our conversation. Would I be unreasonable to pop over or post a note through their door requesting that we have an outdoor mealtime rota so we can all enjoy our gardens in peace-as we are entitled to?

I had to take some time away from this thread as it's quite disturbing how many people have made assumptions about me and my DH. People have insinuated that I'm some sort of evil witch who is full of spite and envy. The reality is that this is a family road and my husband and I (and other normal families on the road) have a zero tolerance policy regarding obnoxious loutish behaviour that has the potential to ruin our children's childhoods. It won't be tolerated. If they don't like it, they can move somewhere else where singletons and other party animals live. Thank you to the few people who have shown me some empathy.

All has been relatively quiet by their standards in the past week, but the same friends have now arrived with a couple of others.....They're sitting in the garden in their England shirts like football hooligans and drinking alcohol on a Sunday night 😭.

I did not realise there were roads, or houses, that could only be purchased by "normal families" with children (and without trampolines it seems). I certainly did not know of this. I would love to know what the definition of a "normal family" is and if as a foster carer looking after teenagers with complex behavioural issues I would qualify? I suspect I wouldn't as one of my teenagers is currently sitting quietly in the garden in his football shirt!!

whiteroseredrose · 07/07/2026 17:38

My DGM had neighbours who were noisy until late. What truly vexed her was when they climbed over the fence and took her garden chairs for their guests. She took delivery of some bags of manure for her garden which sat by the fence for months.

willitevergetwarm · 07/07/2026 13:15

So because they don't have children they shouldn't have bought a house in this road? Is this what you are saying OP?

For all you know they could have bought this home expecting to have children but are having fertility issues

Perhaps you should pay for them to move away from such a horrible judgemental neighbour

Are your children allowed to be children and play op, or are they made to sit indoors and not utter a single word, seen and not heard?

sueelleker · 07/07/2026 09:30

I'm just glad OP doesn't share a communal garden. She'd expect everyone to vacate it for her sole use!

Wadsworthy · 07/07/2026 08:14

The reality is that this is a family road and my husband and I (and other normal families on the road)

Oh is "a family road" a Council zoning category now?

There is nothing wrong with my DH proposing some ground rules that we can collectively agree on-we are all living within a few metres of each other after all! We have lived here a few years longer than the couple; they moved in last year and this is primarily a family area, almost everyone on our road has kids!

I'm sure that most people would rather hear my children in the garden as opposed to listening to dating escapades, loud bitching about their work colleagues and drunken conversations. I have purposely avoided buying a trampoline as I believe they are antisocial in estates.

OMG No, I would not prefer to hear your children. Such arrogance. So what if you think it's a "family area" - it's not. It's where your neighbours live. And so what if you've lied there longer than them. Entitled, much?

You need to unclench OP.

willitevergetwarm · 06/07/2026 13:24

I was in my garden yesterday, drinking alcohol, listening to music and wearing a bikini...................

Good job my neighbours are not the fun police like you are OP

hereforthelolz · 06/07/2026 12:32

This has to be rage bait. Nobody can be this much of a knob 😅

VoiceFromThePit · 06/07/2026 12:11

Get yourself a nice loud radio in your garden

Goldengirl123 · 06/07/2026 12:10

I thought you were being unreasonably but on the other hand I had sympathy with you (not about the clothing though as that’s none of your business). When I just read that you husband had found him in LinkedIn though, my sympathy disappeared in a flash. What a horrible spiteful thing to do and why on earth would you think his employers would need to know???

Well if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck...They sound like hooligans and are behaving like hooligans with their beers when everyone has to be up for work and school tomorrow! I have no idea why this behaviour is being normalised at the moment, how do they expect my children to sleep tonight?

Newsflash, they don't care if your children sleep tonight or not

Singletons and party animals. You’re bloody hilarious.

You can’t dictate who lives on a street. If you don’t like it when you are the one who should move.
It’ll probably do you kids some good seeing people have fun.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a drink on a Sunday. In fact, me and my friends always meet for drinks on a Sunday afternoon and the kids come with us. They love it.

Me, DH and DS (aged 11) all stayed up to watch the match wearing our England shirts. We also went out for beers beforehand.
Loads of people I know did the same or had parties/bbq’s.

None of us are hooligans. You’re so incredibly narrow minded that you see a football shirt and assume they’re a hooligan.

I hope your neighbours had a brilliant night. It was a match to remember.

BuckChuckets · 06/07/2026 10:39

@Guarddogdaschunds the thread had died a death after people stopped believing it. The only reason someone who was allegedly so upset by people's comments would come back and resurrect it would be to get attention 🤔

8misskitty8 · 06/07/2026 08:57

If they are are regularly having parties into the early morning then by all means report that.
But the rest of your 'complaints' , you'll get nowhere complaining to anyone official about.

Wearing bikinis, perfectly legal infact she could be naked in her OWN garden and nothing you can do. Stop watching her out of your top window. If she has implants, so what !

Get a higher fence.

This is probably a wind up. Can I ask a favour, keep it going it's amusing me.
I am watching the Brazil Norway match. I might even have a drink. I know shocking on a Sunday.

Morning. I went to bed but I was worried all night about you out there .. prancing in your bikini. Hope your head isn’t too sore today!

NoSausage · 06/07/2026 08:35

Sordid details of dating and skimpy bikinis?

Think you need to put down the Daily Star!

I am an elderly Mrs Bucket and I think she’s hilariously ridiculous.

No thank you. Give me the fun and the gossip over your little darlings. 😄

themiddleofourstreet · 06/07/2026 06:18

Hope they woke you up and kept you up all night

Winefride · 06/07/2026 06:06

There are limitations to living on an island with as many people as there are populating this island.

Sitting outside, talking at normal decibel levels, having a BBQ and enjoying the sun in a bikini (which can only be seen from your windows upstairs) sounds very tolerable.

I think this is one of the strangest posts I've seen on MN but, then again, highlights for me that the British are some of the most miserable people in the world in great need of hobbies that don't involve trying to judge and control others lives due to lack of fulfilment in their own.

Pineapplewhip · 06/07/2026 06:03

I love that the first few comments of this were kind of half empathetic - but the more OP dug herself into a hole everyone started to rip her one 😂

I hope the football hooligans kept you up all night Mrs Bucket!
