To have not backed down on this shit of a man on the train?

I went to the toilet on a busy commuter train. Came back and the person I was sat next to has his feet on the seat I had vacated. I said excuse me please to him and he begrudgingly moved his feet and sat down. Hes way over my seat with his body anyway with the way he's sat but when I sat down he said 'for fucks sake'. When I asked if there was an issue and not to say for fucks sake to my simple request, he said I was sitting on his knee. I am absolutely not touching him. I told him so and that the way he is sitting means he is taking up some of my seat and that hes very rude, including putting his skanky feet on the seat. He shut up then, but its time after time of men (and a few women, but mostly men) who have their bags on the seats or are just shit fellow commuters with their incessant sniffing and just being unpleasant when asked to move their belongings to free up a seat. AIBU?

Travelling on a very busy train this week, elderly people were standing while 3 young women were each occupying 2 seats (one each for their bags). I said "Excuse me please" to the nearest girl while looking at her bag. She tutted and lifted her bag. The others then lifted their bags and 2 other people were able to sit. However, the 20 something female sitting in the seat allocated for use by the elderly, sat tight while 2 elderly men were standing. Extremely inconsiderate.

I have tried to normalize putting the arm half down, so it acts as a barrier. When it’s up it’s invisible; when it’s down, they can put their arm well over it into your space. When they do this their legs tend to drift over too. Often the person just looks puzzled and puts it all the way down. I’d like to have the guts to put it back to halfway and say “I’d like it there so you cant put your arm over it into my space” . But I don’t.
please feel free to work with me on this 😆

RVectensian · 26/06/2026 18:14

I assume the OP means he swung round and leant against the wall/window with his feet up on her seat.

BunfightBetty · 26/06/2026 18:10

Well done, OP. They need telling every time.

I had it this week - on the tube, got a seat (miracle) and then some guy comes and plonks himself down next to me and proceeds to lean against me, so his arm is well over the dividing line between the seats, over my space.

I suppose he expected me to just take it, but I said 'Your arm is in my space. This is the line between our seats. This side of it is my space. You need to keep within your own space, on your side of the dividing line'. He looked at me as if I had two heads, but did then move back into his own area. Didn't say sorry, though.

It's like it just doesn't occur to them to take stock of their surroundings and work out what's their space, and what belongs to others. They're quite happy to take up more than their fair share of space.

Male entitlement.

Sometimes I despair at my own sex. News today full of rapists, murderers and other violent criminals. Every single one a man!

See here, my first few sentences of my OP;

Doh!!!

Doesn't make sense, sorry.

ServietteUnion · 26/06/2026 17:54

Good for you. I travelled on a long distance train recently and found a man sitting in the seat I'd reserved when i joined the train midway. It was a very crowded train and I've no objection to him sitting there until I got on in the hope that I wouldn't turn up, but when I asked him to move, he tried to just pretend I wasn't there or it wasn't him I was talking to. So I said really clearly, "You're sitting in the seat I reserved. It's my seat and I want it." He looked appalled at my audacity but since everyone was staring by then, he got up and slunk away. I'm disabled as well. Did he think I was just going to say, "Oh, well, you have it then." Cheeky git.

MrsColinRobinson · 26/06/2026 17:50

Apologies for my flippant post. No doubt implied as to the validity of your post.

Men on trains can be awful. I'd rather women's carriages than quiet ones personally.

I think what she's asking is if he was sat next to you and after you got up, how did he put his feet on your seat, like did he swing his body round and put his feet up on the seat you were in.

Diagram needed! ☺️

How did he put his feet on your seat if he was sat next to you?

Am smelling something rather fishy about this, and it's not his skanky feet.

You clearly didn't read my post properly so you can think its fishy all you want. I went to the bathroom and came back to find his feet on the seat I vacated when I went to the loo. That's all. Simple stuff really.

You're blooming brilliant you are. Respect.

FFSItsTooHot · 26/06/2026 17:06

Good for you for standing up to him. I get sick to death of men who think that they can be rude to women, and expect us to just accept it because we're so conditioned to be 'nice'. Well fuck that shit. I am by nature a non-confrontational person and I choose my battles carefully. But I've had enough of it lately. If someone (and it's nearly always a man) really riles me I will say something.

Hell is other people. I had to travel by train on Monday. I was trying to read my book in peace. Woman sat next to me with headphones on at such a volume I could hear every word of her crap music. Woman in the seat behind was having an inane conversation on her phone with it on loud speaker. Another person had some kind of alarm going off on their phone for about 5 mins (maybe they were asleep - I couldn't see). People are such inconsiderate twats these days!!

I just have to move carriages when there’s any sniffing. I hate it.

I can’t abide sniffing. If I’m near a sniffer I will offer them a tissue (always have a packet in my bag).

More often than not they accept with thanks 😃

The trouble with this is that middling men are less disgusted by being touched by a woman than we are by being touched by them AND if you're unlucky enough to get a psycho that's the least of your worries.

I used to get the odd psycho when I was younger and made myself smaller. Yet to have any of them not move for my womanspread or a head lean! I think their tiny little brains can't comprehend the uno reverse move.

AgnesMcDoo · 26/06/2026 11:09

I applaud you. You did the right thing.

CurdinHenry · 26/06/2026 11:06

ThisCosyGreenGuide · 26/06/2026 10:26

I make myself larger or sometimes get even closer to these men and rest my head on their shoulder. When they clearly get uncomfortable and move, I apologise and say that I thought it was ok as they had no respect for my personal space. Oh and not to forget, I do this with my sweetest smile!

What nonsense.

The seats are for humans and the luggage areas are for luggage.

Ok, you and the noncey men can agree on something I guess

Yetone · 26/06/2026 10:38

ByHangryHazelQuoter · 25/06/2026 17:18

Completely agree. And call me old fashioned I don’t care: I absolutely cannot stand looking at a man sitting on a train whilst a woman has to stand, or in some cases sitting on the floor. I would be absolutely ashamed if that were my husband or sons. They will always stand for a woman or someone older than them. Yes I know “equality” and all that but there you are

You are out of touch. Men should not have to stand for women on trains.

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 26/06/2026 10:35

I’m sick of this shit too. On planes men who put their feet and arms into your tiny space - on one long haul flight I finally dropped off having wedged my feet to the edge of my space in front of me and arm onto my side of the arm rest to gradually move the man next to me into his space and he slammed his foot on mine and arm onto mine on the arm rest violently. It was not an accident. They think they are entitled to our space.

You are pretty selfish not to wonder why people are doing it.

Besides which people with bags DO need more room than those travelling without. Sit next to a bagless bloke next time.

What nonsense.
