Hubbys job at risk because of family

Pickybitsheatwave · 24/06/2026 23:11

DH trusted his brother with his Clubcard employee card. He gave it to his partner to use as she was doing the food shops. She’s been caught twice stealing with a trolley full and hubby is now being investigated at work. Apparently BIL knew she had a habit with stealing as he already pre warned her not to use the card if she is going to be stealing. I should add that they are very comfortable and don’t need to be stealing. She is the other woman and I have never been able to gel with her. Now i can’t bare the thought of being around her even more. DH is in a management role so i can imagine they are going to take this very seriously.

I feel like DH is downplaying it all because he doesn’t want to rock the boat but I am fuming!!!

Am I over reacting? Hubby says he didn’t want to tell me because he knew I’d over react. She’s potentially put my husband at risk of losing his job.

True. It all hinges on whether he's allowed to let family members use the card.

Exactly this. Your husband is an idiot. Retailers are often very strict on use and misuse of discount cards and it’s often gross misconduct which leads to dismissal. He could easily lose his job yet and it will serve him right. What a fucking moron you married.

I would suggest to the brother in law that he should write a letter saying he accidentally mistook the card for his, and his wife then laterally used it without know it wasn’t theirs. We only have one nectar and club card account that me and DH both scan. Once you’ve ascertained the card was used erroneously, your BIL/SIL are going to offer to pay whatever the shortfall is in items scanned vs. taken.

The card just magically ended up in his wallet?

As a senior manager that isn’t going to fly. He should not only get aware of the rules, but also enforcing them on the people who work for him. It’s not inconceivable that he’s previously had to sack someone for giving their discount to someone else, as it happens more often than you think. Not only that, someone up thread says you have to sign to acknowledge you have read and understood the T’s and C’s of the discount card.

He’d have to be incredibly lucky to keep his job under these circumstances.

I agree - but I think it is about more than his job tbh: he could face criminal consequences for participating in a fraud . It may impact his ability to get another job afterwards - but OP may already be panicking so was wary of saying so. Honestly, he has been really naive and too trusting of his brother. My DH wouldn’t even let me use his company perks as they are ‘employee specific’ and not for spouses and family. My DH would get barred from his professional memberships and never work again if he did this, even without criminal implications - really, OP’s DH has been very very foolish. He should seek legal advice and take representation to meetings with HR to try and negotiate his way out of this so that he can at least try to protect his future employability.

watchingthishtread · 25/06/2026 09:41

He's the one who commited the sackable offence by giving his brother his card. The shoplifting is reason he got caught but it's not the reason his job is at risk. You are angry at the wrong person. The police will deal with her, he is your problem.

No that poster is a very special person and got an immediate, personalised reply from the top person of Tesco thanking her for her amazing services to the company.

I wonder if she’ll also be nominated for a Nobel prize.
I hope so as she is obviously such an important person and does so much good in the world.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 25/06/2026 09:36

His job is at risk because he gave out a card he shouldn’t be sharing with family. If he’d followed the correct protocols he wouldn’t be in trouble or held responsible for any one else’s actions. He shouldn’t have given out his card, even if SIL & BIL hadn’t been stealing the fact your husband was giving them a discount they weren’t entitled to means he was effectively stealing from his employer. Your DH is the one to blame here.

Tillow4ever · 25/06/2026 09:35

AnonyMumAuDHD · 25/06/2026 09:26

Sadly you are likely right - he’s facilitated and participated in a fraud. It may have seemed harmless, but the discounts are part of a contractual agreement between your DH’s company and the store. It was a really stupid thing to do. Am so sorry, but he is best speaking to them to acknowledge that he lent bro card not fully appreciating the legal aspect of what he was doing - and that he had no idea that his bro would pass the card on as this was done without his consent.

Doing a big shop paying for a few items then scanning DH’s card to get even more discount! I think he’s going to lose his job.

MyDeftDuck · 25/06/2026 09:25

DH needs to be totally open and honest with his employers on this. He has to tell them exactly who he loaned his card to and why.
The shoplifting is a police matter surely.
I hope DH keeps his job but lessons should be learned here.

Pearlstillsinging · 25/06/2026 09:24

No matter how you try to spin this, the original fault lies with DH. He gave his brother the discount card when he shouldn't have done.

That is stealing from his employer, if he had taken a shopping list and done the shopping for them, they would gave legitimately been able to benefit from the discount whilst staying within the rules.
He can now either confess to letting his DB have the card, or lie about how it happened. You are right, he is likely to lose his job. Set of idiots.

LakieLady · 25/06/2026 09:21

Anyahyacinth · 24/06/2026 23:39

Maybe as thieves they stole this card too? …..and your DH learns never to be so stupid again and protects his job

I was wondering if that might work; denying that he ever gave it to them and that they must have found it or taken it.

If OP or her DH have used it in the same period that won't work though.

SIL sounds a bit of a nightmare and BIL not much better. I'm not sure I'd want anything to do with them.

KilkennyCats · 25/06/2026 09:20

saraclara · 25/06/2026 09:16

What's the matter with you? And why on earth would the OP give you her husband's name?

Good grief.

Haha! You know the Strike books, where they had a nutter drawer in the filing cabinet?
That’s where your communications will be filed @TheseWordsAreMine 😁

ACR7 · 25/06/2026 09:19

When I worked at Asda many moons ago it was instant sack to let someone use your employee discount card. You could nominate another user but they had to live in the same house as you. They were unbelievably strict with this.

saraclara · 25/06/2026 09:16

TheseWordsAreMine · 25/06/2026 06:49

I have had a thank you email from head office.

Please give names OP.

cookbookjunkie · 25/06/2026 09:16

Tillow4ever · 25/06/2026 09:04

I read this as meaning the op and her husband didn’t know the SIL stole at all (well, apart from men of course) - it was only when he had the conversation with his brother (presumably after she was caught stealing) that the brother told him that he’d told his wife not to shoplift when using the card.

I don’t understand though how she was caught stealing twice, but the staff discount yes has only been found after the second time.

Sorry, yes I misunderstood.

KilkennyCats · 25/06/2026 09:15

tilypu · 25/06/2026 07:32

There's is a similar thing with Tesco.

But they have to order a separate card for them.

Ops husband is a manager. It's highly unlikely he doesn't know this.

He’d probably be dismissed for sheer incompetence if he claimed not to understand a simple concept like this 😬

Some idiot has apparently sent a link to this thread to Tesco head office. They also got a reply and all before 7am which is bullshit.

@ThisCoralGuide That must've been a bitter pill to swallow it shouldn't be different because he's a manager .
Employees across the board should abide by company policy.
That was an honest this is how it is post.🙏

Yes it was but I soon learned my mistake but I’m sure he will get fired for gross misconduct as that’s what I got and if not he is definitely lucky
