Hubbys job at risk because of family

Pickybitsheatwave · 24/06/2026 23:11

DH trusted his brother with his Clubcard employee card. He gave it to his partner to use as she was doing the food shops. She’s been caught twice stealing with a trolley full and hubby is now being investigated at work. Apparently BIL knew she had a habit with stealing as he already pre warned her not to use the card if she is going to be stealing. I should add that they are very comfortable and don’t need to be stealing. She is the other woman and I have never been able to gel with her. Now i can’t bare the thought of being around her even more. DH is in a management role so i can imagine they are going to take this very seriously.

I feel like DH is downplaying it all because he doesn’t want to rock the boat but I am fuming!!!

Am I over reacting? Hubby says he didn’t want to tell me because he knew I’d over react. She’s potentially put my husband at risk of losing his job.

Another post to add - if I was you I’d be advising DH to apply for other supermarkets right now. Jump before you’re pushed.

TY78910 · 25/06/2026 11:21

She’s either a CF or a a kleptomaniac.

Your DH is very very silly to allow this. He is not responsible by association to the theft, but he’s absolutely broken his policy by letting a family member use his personal discount card.

I’m sorry you’re going through this but in my company that would be treated as gross misconduct.

Yeah this lie will unravel very quickly with transaction data and CCTV.

As a former retail worker, albeit for a different retailer, I imagine a Tesco Colleague Clubcard will also look physically from a regular one (mostly likely with "colleague" or "staff" on it).

Surely the inquiry would focus on if the cardholder has stolen from their employer and CCTV footage will show it wasn’t him, but his card was used?

Several supermarkets have the rule of the members of the family that have the discount card must live with you as part of your family.

I know for both M&S and ASDA it is a dismissal situation.

@Pickybitsheatwave Agree with this. I worked for ASDA and it couldn't be shared or used by/for people who didn't LIVE with you, even if they are close family members. I'm pretty sure he WILL lose his job - and it is entirely his own fault. Unless whoever he works for has different rules - but I doubt it

JustJugglingCats · 25/06/2026 07:44

Can I ask why you emailed anyone? The OP has already said it's being investigated so the supermarket are already aware.

And who says he husband actually works for Tesco? They could work for Sainsbury's and have just changed a detail like so many do.

Because it's ongoing and now being spoken about here.

This thread is only showing that even the extended family are not to be trusted as the investigation has already established.

Chritrup · 25/06/2026 11:06

I’m surprised at the number of people suggesting that OP’s husband should lie about why the card was in his SIL’s possession.

If you’re caught red handed breaking a rule, the best possible approach is to be contrite and apologetic. It’s not to make up some bullshit story about your card getting nicked; that’s just adding fuel to the fire.

Only paying for a few items and stealing the rest is one thing. But using the discount card at the same time on the few items you’ve paid for serves no purpose other than to set up this ridiculous story.

It's amazing how many people will steal even a few pennies.

There was a lot in the media a while ago about people who were buying avocados and putting them through the self service tills as carrots.

Some sections of the general public do the most bizarre things.

This has nothing to do with the stealing.

This is everything to do with the fact that your hubby let his brother and sister in-law use his employer discount card, he should of gave them his family and friends card.

The employer discount card is to be only used by those who live in your husband's household.

If he gets sacked this is 100 percent your hubby's fault.

As mentioned above, different retailers have different policies when it comes to use of discount cards and I'm not sure what you're saying here aligns to the Tesco policy.

At the retailer I worked for, I had to register my partner (same household) as a "nominated user" via HR. He was then issued his own card. There was no such thing as a "family and friends card." The policies and risks were made very clear when I joined.

McSpoot · 25/06/2026 09:43

The card just magically ended up in his wallet?

Maybe the husband got his brother to jump out the shops to get something for him, I’ve ended up with my mum and friends cards that way. Since they want the points. I don’t think it’s a stretch. The point is the cash is paid back for anything stolen by a third party. They probably have CCTV footage of the incident too?

Shittyyear2025 · 25/06/2026 09:52

Just as an aside - What's the rule with students living away from home who work for supermarkets? Can they give their second card to mum to use in a different city as that's their 'home address' for all purposes other than correspondence?

It might depend on the supermarket.

Tesco, the second card can be given to someone at a different address. That didn't use to be the case, but changed a couple of years ago. Morrisons also allows the second card to be someone at a different address.

I don't know about others.

You can order one for a family member but he never did so hubby gave him his.

So then its your husband's own fault isnt it?

Not sure why you are so angry at SIL if he shouldn't have done this in the first place 🤷‍♀️

PetuniaTabbernacle · 25/06/2026 10:43

OneNewEagle · 25/06/2026 10:36

The card should be for you and him no one else.

When I worked in retail (not Tesco) you had to a nominate another user via HR and they would be supplied their own discount card. This could only be someone in your household, although they may have changed and it sounds like Tesco allow you to nominate outsider of your household.

Until I did that, I would only put through transactions using the discount card through my payment card and with me present.

It's not worth the risk.

OneNewEagle · 25/06/2026 10:36

I'd claim she stole the card tbh. Wouldn't admit to lending it out.

this - and he learns his lesson to never ever trust either of them again

Exactly. Pure scum.

Club card employee discount can only be used by 1 other member and that had to be from the same household so yes he is going to be looking at an investigation with consequence.

This isn’t true anymore. You can now apply for a colleague club card for one person living at a different address.

DannyDeever · 25/06/2026 09:57

I would suggest to the brother in law that he should write a letter saying he accidentally mistook the card for his, and his wife then laterally used it without know it wasn’t theirs. We only have one nectar and club card account that me and DH both scan. Once you’ve ascertained the card was used erroneously, your BIL/SIL are going to offer to pay whatever the shortfall is in items scanned vs. taken.

Yeah this lie will unravel very quickly with transaction data and CCTV.

saraclara · 24/06/2026 23:46

Because she STOLE! Knowing that it would be traced to her brother in law! TWICE!

FFS that's far worse than lending one's discount card.

She's not employed by Tesco though is she, DH is.

Some idiot has apparently sent a link to this thread to Tesco head office. They also got a reply and all before 7am which is bullshit.

And even if they had, so what. OP doesn’t work for them. You can’t stop people telling family members about goings on that directly affect them at work. OP’s husband is already in the max amount of trouble possible anyway so even if Tesco did take action over him telling his wife (unlikely) it’s not going to make anything any worse, and OP doesn’t work for them. So all it does is make that PP look a knob
