Hubbys job at risk because of family

Pickybitsheatwave · 24/06/2026 23:11

DH trusted his brother with his Clubcard employee card. He gave it to his partner to use as she was doing the food shops. She’s been caught twice stealing with a trolley full and hubby is now being investigated at work. Apparently BIL knew she had a habit with stealing as he already pre warned her not to use the card if she is going to be stealing. I should add that they are very comfortable and don’t need to be stealing. She is the other woman and I have never been able to gel with her. Now i can’t bare the thought of being around her even more. DH is in a management role so i can imagine they are going to take this very seriously.

I feel like DH is downplaying it all because he doesn’t want to rock the boat but I am fuming!!!

Am I over reacting? Hubby says he didn’t want to tell me because he knew I’d over react. She’s potentially put my husband at risk of losing his job.

She has stolen his salary for the rest of his working life.
She has stolen years of worry free life from you.

No, the OP's DH stole his salary for the rest of his working life (accepting your hyperbole).

He won't be punished because she stole, he will be punished because he broke the terms of his employment by giving his brother his card. That is 100% on him.

You could plead ignorant and say you didn’t realise you couldn’t let family use your discount- Morrisons employees have a friends and family discount which i know you don’t have to be living with the employee to use, you could just say that you thought it was a similar thing?

Everyone has to sign a declaration to say they fully understand the terms and conditions of the discount card and the consequences of breaching said conditions.
Pleading ignorance wont fly Im afraid

You can order one for a family member but he never did so hubby gave him his.

This in itself is a sackable offence for Tesco 😬

No hubby didn’t know, When he chatted with BIL he told DH that he warned her not to steal if she’s using DH card. We never knew she was a serial shoplifter! But yes hubbys fault but he has always been able to trust his brother so this is a shock.

What?! So he knew the SIL was light fingered and he still gave over the card anyway, with a warning not to use it when she went robbing his employer?

Well then he's incredibly stupid and complicit. He deserves all he gets. Saying he didn't realise she was a 'serial' shoplifter is no defence. It was okay when he thought she was just an occasional shoplifter was it? Hmm

So what card do you have when your skanky SIL and BIL are busy ripping off your husband's employer when they do their shopping? You say he never ordered a second card for family, so what card do you have?

Well he is an all round plonker isn't he?

godmum56 · 25/06/2026 08:16

"If you are going to steal, then don't use the card" I mean WTAF?

ifonly4 · 25/06/2026 08:12

His job is at risk if he hasn't followed the terms and conditions of having a staff card. Where I worked you could only use the staff card yourself and could only buy items for family that lived with you. Second discount card could only be issued to family member that lived with you.

One of our Managers lived with his GF 50% of the item (due to distance from work) - he gave her his card while staying with her so she could buy things for their benefit - he received a disciplinary and had card taken off him. Unfortunately, what has happened has caused more serious consequences.

MikeRafone · 25/06/2026 08:11

Has your dh been suspended from work?

Rooroobear · 25/06/2026 08:08

I worked for Tesco and it’s classed as gross misconduct to give discount to other people than the person that works there. We weren’t allowed to give discounts to family members/friends. Just the person that had the card. Whether it’s different now, I don’t know

There is a reason you order a separate card for a family member… Your dh was an idiot deliberately to lose control of his own card. Obviously it doesn’t look good to say you broke the rules because you didn’t think the person you broke the rules for was as much of an idiot as you are.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/06/2026 08:04

Well, "hubby" has fucked around and now he's going to find out, isn't he?

Several supermarkets have the rule of the members of the family that have the discount card must live with you as part of your family.

I know for both M&S and ASDA it is a dismissal situation.

Morrisons is the same. To use your card they must live with you as member of your household. You can also get one friends and family card that can be used by another household. Misuse of your own card will also get you sacked there. Your husband needs to start looking for another job.

FairKoala · 25/06/2026 08:01

If he had defined his family member to be his brother to have a separate card and his sil had done this would he still be in the same position

If your defined family member abuses the card is the employee responsible

I would say if it had happened once, that he gave his clubcard to his brother for a one off occasion and was about to order him his own personal one and his sil had taken it from Bil (this could be construed as Bil giving the clubcard to his wife or her stealing it from his wallet)

Twice and he is on dodgy ground. Unless he didn’t know about the first stealing incident

Or he could just act like ordering brother his own card had slipped his mind and he didn’t know sil was taking his card and be very very apologetic and plead his case of trusting his brother

Personally I wouldn’t have this woman anywhere near me and your dh should understand that she has stolen from you not just Tesco.
If he does lose his job.
She has stolen his salary for the rest of his working life.

She has stolen years of worry free life from you.

For what?

The thrill of stealing a dozen eggs and a packet of butter etc

Maybe if she had to work 2 jobs from now till she retires to pay you back for the loss of wages she won’t have time to steal.

I also wouldn’t have her anywhere near me as she can’t help herself stealing stuff from your house/bag /purse.

I think your dh is a prat if he thought that he could get away with things and trusting his brother

Hos brother knew what she is like so why give her the card in the first place.

Maybe brother should start looking for another job to repay you

Backedoffhackedoff · 25/06/2026 08:00

Btw as someone who knows Tesco head office what happens to him will completely depend on how much they need or like him. If he’s considered useful they won’t sack him.

if he’s a store manager the same probably applies tbh

Frumpitydoo · 25/06/2026 07:59

Your DH has committed fraud. I'd be advising him to start job hunting. Sorry OP this sucks.

ClearFruit · 25/06/2026 07:51

You're husband has put his own job at risk by letting his brother use his card. He knew his sister in law was a thief, but let them have the card anyway. This is nobody's fault but your husband's.

Cloudconfusion · 25/06/2026 07:50

Op. I agree with others, my friends son was fired from Tesco for lending out his card. He let a mate use it. The issue is not your sil stole. The issue is your husband lent his card to someone. He’s not permitted to do that. And from what I know they take it very seriously.

if this is real he wil be fired, as they won’t have a situation where a manager can misuse but lower employees can’t.

Helpfullright · 25/06/2026 07:50

do not lie, I can only assume that your husbands card is linked in his phone so he’s given the physical card….if that’s the case chances are the card has been used in 2 stores at similar times of lunch/shopping

the second he handed the card over it’s gross misconduct, nothing to do with the then forwarding theft.

he will be sacked it’s pretty standard process for clubcard abuse as he is also effectively a thief.

Cloudconfusion · 25/06/2026 07:45

TheseWordsAreMine · 25/06/2026 06:32

Link forwarded to head office

You can’t seriously think Tesco is going to email every single site and say hey did someone get stealing when using a card, they just started a thread on mumsnet, 😂

JustJugglingCats · 25/06/2026 07:44

TheseWordsAreMine · 25/06/2026 07:09

All transactions can be found.

This thread needs to be deleted.

Can I ask why you emailed anyone? The OP has already said it's being investigated so the supermarket are already aware.

And who says he husband actually works for Tesco? They could work for Sainsbury's and have just changed a detail like so many do.

Fitbodyproblem · 25/06/2026 07:42

Every Tesco employee knows that they can't lend their colleague card, and that to do so is gross misconduct.

jayni149 · 25/06/2026 07:41

Husband's job at risk for abusing employee perks

Here - I've updated your thread title for you. He deserves to lose his job. And SIL deserves to be prosecuted. Complete lack of integrity, the lot of them.

ClutteredPalace · 25/06/2026 07:40

It's definitely gross misconduct, you can't even lend your clubcard to a colleague who has forgotten theirs, let alone a relative. He could have ordered a second card for his brother but ultimately he'd still be responsible for any misuse of the second card. Tesco a very firm about clubcard misuse.

Holdonforsummer · 25/06/2026 07:39

So hubby knew SIL had a habit of stealing and STILL let his card go to that house? I love how you opened by saying your husband ‘trusted’ the card to his brother. Erm, no, he broke the rules and ‘gave it’ when he wasn’t supposed to. Sorry just I think he deserves to be disciplined here.

Here2talk · 25/06/2026 07:39

I used to work in a high street store, a colleague used to give her discount card out to everybody. Head office could track seeing other people were using her card compared to the account details being used to pay.

it won’t be the stealing that loses him his job, although it could as well - he could lose it by lending out his discount.
