AIBU to question Snag Tights using very plus-size models?

If they’re purely for obese people doesn’t it make sense that they use obese people in the advertising? If they’re not purely for obese people using overtly overweight people is usually just cheap virtue signalling and a big no from me.

I was trying to help my partner find some swimming trunks a month or so ago and came across an advert for a full range of sizes but the picture has a very overweight model. It’s was extremely unappealing and a straight no from me.

Probably because they don’t want to encourage people to see the images of somebody very underweight as “thinspiration”.
IMO, overweight models are different because it’s a very uncommon thing to look at somebody bigger than yourself and think “I really want to be that big”. It might encourage them to think “Actually I’m fine as I am and don’t need to lose weight” but it’s still very much not a desirable thing to be morbidly obese. So the two things are not comparable really.
Plus the health dangers of eating disorders like anorexia nervosa can become life threatening in a really, really short timeframe. It’s not on a parallel with obesity.

Their usp was the sizing for different body types. Fair enough, that is a good idea as typical tight sizing doesn’t differentiate between a short fat person and a tall thin person. You can read all that on the size page though. And with that usp there was no need to stray into fetish.

I did buy some snag tights years ago, I was a size 10-12 and not bothered by the larger models but I am definitely bothered by the promotion of choking, the pornified images and the fetishising of fatness as well as their insistence that men can be women. I will never buy from them again. The tights weren’t even nice, tight waist elastic and dingy colours.

Used to love Snag for their great range of sizes, patterns and colours. And it is helpful to see how the tights look on a body your own size.

Isn’t a big part of their market ‘chub rub’? It makes perfect sense then, that they use fat models.

I don't think it even matters. Very few people find morbid obesity something to aspire to whether we have plus size models or not

Well aren't you lucky not to need plus sized tights then. I'm in Tunisia just now and their chub rubs are a godsend under my dresses.

Tights aren't just tights. When you're tall and plus size, tights like Snags are a godsend. I wear them and it feels as if they aren't there. I don't have to stretch them to their limit to get them to be long enough for my legs and then sit properly at my waist as well. Standard tights don't offer that. And their larger sizes only come in black, brown, grey and if you're very lucky, navy.

Why shouldn't bigger women have a choice of colours and patterns in tights that actually fit and are comfortable to wear? Showing bigger women isn't telling the world 'go on, be fat, it's great!' Nobody is that stupid. But we exist and we are allowed clothes. We do not deserve to be punished with boring drab clothes for the sin of being fat.

Manufacturer of plus size clothes uses plus size models, and so they should.

The ban on using small/underwweight models was not about it being more convienent to find small clothes!!

It was because it was acknowledged that those underweight models are not healthy and not a good role model for people looking at them.

The same applies to those overweight models. They're not healthy and not a good role model for those looking at them.

I agree some of the images are not neutrally modelling tights, but bordering on plus sized soft porn..

The company started as being size inclusive but plus size women embraced the products as they fit them well. So you advertise to your customer base.
Considering the majority of tights are not made for plus size women specifically it’s surely refreshing that they not only manufacture tights in plus sizes, but actually feature plus sized women wearing them.

They fit different on different bodies

When i was bigger I used to find it helpful to see plus size bodies because often tops are shorter etc

Snag are a plus size brand, they go up to a size 28 to 36 in all their items as standard, which is well beyond what a typical clothing company does. Usually for other retailers, there is a standard size range, then a limited selection of items that go up to the largest sizes. Often up to 22 or 24 but not beyond that.

They aren’t specifically a plus size brand and make perfectly ordinary tights, but they focus on the obese models and fetish stuff and therefore I assume I’m not their target customer. It shouldn’t be allowed to have models at either end of the weight spectrum and all this about needing to see the tights on a similar body to your own is bollocks, they’re tights! I like Heist personally. Perfect fit and don’t have to look at women’s underwear being modelled by men.

Oh no, I don’t mind men wearing tights at all! It’s the men pretending to be women that I have issues with - which I consider to be a ‘kink’!!

They have a range of sizes of model and it’s actually quite helpful, as they also say what size they are wearing. Even when you look at a size chart or order your ‘usual size’ from sites it can sometimes be off. If I can see someone who I think looks similar proportions to me, this makes choosing a size much easier.

Also, I take great offence at the PP suggestion chub rub only affects plus size people! 🤣
