to ask my neighbour to bring her laundry in?

I've name changed for this because I feel a bit silly to be posting, but it's driving me crazy so I need some advice.

We live in a new build next door to another couple who recently moved in. Our gardens are pretty close together and only really separated by a small fence that we can easily see over when standing.

We're all mid-thirties and they're a nice enough couple, are polite and friendly, keep themselves to themselves and are pretty quiet, so no problems there.

The issue I'm having is that the woman is objectively beautiful, very toned, slim, etc. Today she's obviously taking full advantage of the lovely weather we're having here and has decided to hang her underwear out on the line to dry. When I say underwear, I'm not talking about the simple black briefs and maternity bras that I'm currently wearing, but beautiful skimpy Victoria's Secret type stuff.

I don't know if it's my hormones or what the issue is, but this is making me feel so jealous because I keep thinking that my DH is looking at her underwear and will start to fancy her, if he doesn't already.

I was thinking that I could write her a small, friendly note just asking if she would mind bringing them inside. I mean, they're so skimpy that they'll probably be dry by now, anyway. I don't have the nerve to ask her face to face because part of me knows I'm being ridiculous, but I can't help how I feel and have been sitting here crying all afternoon imagining her and my DH together.

He thinks I'm acting crazy and said that if I send her a note, he will go to his mum's for the night because it would be absolutely mortifying.

This is off the scale bat shit mentality.

Do you let your DH walk through the lingerie section of M&S? Or are you worried he’s going to start humping the size 8 mannequin with perky tits?

Waheymum · 24/06/2026 18:00

You can't help how you feel, but you can't ask her to take her underwear in because you'll end up looking like 'the crazy, possessive wife next door'. You could buy your own sexy underwear to wear, wash, and hang in your own garden!

Gwenna · 24/06/2026 17:59

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 24/06/2026 16:14

Yes, you're being ridiculous, but you know that already so I won't pile on.

For what it's worth, it's highly unlikely that seeing her underwear on the line is making your husband fancy this woman.

The appeal of sexy underwear for men is the promise of what's underneath it. The grayest, most frayed pair of DP's knickers holds far more promise than any random pair on a nextdoor neighbours washing line, because I remember the last time I took them off her, and anticipate doing it again soon.

Next doors knickers aren't sexy, they're just washing.

Thank you for a wonderful post from a male voice of reason that will surely help the OP.

This reminds me of years ago when we moved to a brand new estate. The couple next door and the couple next to them were all early 20s. Next door woman put a load of frillies on the line, then suddenly the next woman did too. Then next door started pegging hers out like they were on display in a fashion show and then next woman did the same. I quite enjoyed being a spectator as they tried to outdo each other in knicker wars.

Haha that’s brilliant! Or should I say, frilliant 😁

AnNonnyMouse3 · 24/06/2026 17:54

Rightio.

Tableforjoan · 24/06/2026 15:36

Im fat with skimpy undies. I’d hang out more if I got that letter 😅

Also if he is interested he will be regardless of her undies.

Go get yourself on honeybirdette and feel sexy 😉

🤣 Diabolical you are!

GameOfJones · 24/06/2026 17:53

I am aware that I was rather irrational at times when I had DD1 but this really is bananas.

If it was the other way round and your DH was so consumed with thoughts of you shagging your male neighbour that he was crying with jealousy then people on here would be calling him abusive and begging you to leave.

I'm not surprised your DH said he'd go to his mum's if you sent a note. I would die of embarrassment in his shoes too!

TY78910 · 24/06/2026 17:52

YABU on so many levels, sorry.
I know you’re feeling vulnerable but I fully clicked on this expecting this washing to be obstructing you in some way but this must be the most unhinged post of the day.

Buy yourself some nice knickers

This!

YABU, OP! You are reducing women (us) to visually appealing commodities like a nice handbag or pair of shoes and not factoring in any of the other aspects that go towards the formation of relationships and mutual attraction.

So she’s objectively good looking. While he might, just like you, find her visually attractive that does not mean he will feel attracted - that’s totally different! The aesthetic “beauty” scale exists and we’re all on it somewhere (you know symmetry, “easy on the eye”, and all that), but the dynamics of human attraction operate outside of it.

Calm down - just because your neighbour is high on the aesthetic scale, doesn’t mean she’ll be high on the dynamic one when it comes to your husband! 💖

Buy yourself some nice knickers

Dancingsquirrels · 24/06/2026 17:49

I wouldn't want neighbours to see my underwear, so I get where you're coming from

But you can't ask her to bring hers in

Sorry hormones are messing with your head

Squeaktoyoulater · 24/06/2026 17:46

I would put up a higher fence between you.

BMW58 · 24/06/2026 17:45

I'd like to think this is a temporary insanity brought on by pregnancy hormones.

No, OP, don't do anything. For the love of God.

Have a cold drink and a lie-down.

An undergarment worn to cover the genital and anal areas of the body. Sometimes known as pants, knickers or grundies.

"Skidders" might sometimes refer more specifically to the above described undergarment if it has been, or regularly is besmirched by "skidmarks", "scooter tracks", "go-faster stripes" or "brown bruising".

In other words, worn by someone who doesn’t wipe their arse.

Mumandcarer80 · 24/06/2026 17:42

Oh ffs she can hang wtf she wants out.😂😂😂

What on earth are skidders?

Marmaladeisorange · 24/06/2026 17:38

It's your pregnancy hormones. I've blown things up during pregnancy before that we laugh about now!

ChampagneLassie · 24/06/2026 17:36

Oh my love I think it’s the pregnancy hormones making you feel like this. Hopefully your DH can reassure you that he finds you very attractive as you are! But I’d try to contain your crazy jealous thoughts and not share with him going forwards as you do risk pushing him away. Highly recommend hot milk for practical supportive and attractive nursing bras.

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 24/06/2026 17:34

Butchyrestingface · 24/06/2026 15:49

How would you respond if she asked you to keep your preggo self indoors and under wraps until baby arrives ‘cos seeing you is triggering for her?

Would you be up for it?

I read the three pages hoping no-one else had made the point that I wanted to make, but you have @Butchyrestingface 😭 Anyway, you made your point nice and succinctly, and anyone who recognises my user name will know that I would much rather spend an hour (or more) writing a not nice and long response to whoever the OP of any particular thread might be!

So, here is the version I hoped to get in before anyone else had a chance 😉

@Lookingback01 I am so sorry that you are going through such a rotten time at the moment, but may I suggest another side to the one that has made you so unhappy?

What if your attractive next door neighbour desperately wants to have a baby, and that she and her partner have already gone through two attempts at IVF, but have had no luck so far? Your maternity clothes - not even necessarily your underwear - hanging there on your washing line for hours at a time, might cause her a lot of painful feelings, but hopefully she would be sensible enough to realise that it would be totally unfair of her to ask you to not hang your clothes on the line just because seeing them, triggers her every single time?

If you are reading this OP, please don't reply here that it wouldn't bother you if your neighbour asked you to not hang your maternity clothes on the line, as you would understand her problem and would, therefore, be happy you could help her to feel better. Why I am asking you to not reply with such a response is because that is not the point I am trying to explain! You wanting to ask your neighbour to not put her unies on the line would be extremely embarrassing for her, very unfair, and totally inappropriate. I'm sorry for being so brutal OP! I do hope that your hormones, and this oppressive heat, settle down soon, and that you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy 🩷 xxx

WaltzingWaters · 24/06/2026 17:32

Jesus Christ. Absolutely DO NOT ask her not to hang her undies on her washing line.

Kokonimater · 24/06/2026 17:30

Please get this in perspective. You need to reassure yourself. Is your self esteem really low? Are you insecure. These are the issues that need dealing with. Not the neighbours knickers. Or as you say it’s hormones. But. Remember. Hormones take the lid off things and allow the truth to come up. So maybe you’ve been suppressing insecurities? 💜

Strawberryteabag · 24/06/2026 17:27

Are you the same women that thought her husband was flirting with the women on TV the other day? 🤔

Over40Overdating · 24/06/2026 17:26

Aside from being a batshit thing to post, 9/10 the DH of women who are this insecure look like they’ve just trotted out from under a bridge and are not, in fact, cat nip to every woman around them.

Thank god in this case the DH seems to have his head screwed on despite the fact his partner has such a low opinion of him.

Blimms · 24/06/2026 17:24

Laughorbloodycry · 24/06/2026 17:19

Keep your skidders - of all variety - indoors to dry perhaps.

I never see undies on neighbours lines and they're not seeing mine.

What on earth are skidders?
