How much debt are you in?

Was chatting to a friend earlier who is in over 500k of debt, which she thought was ok but I think is astronomical.

No debt, but middle aged and haven't been able to save or plan properly for old age.

Cerbonny · 24/06/2026 15:19

A mortgage is the only debt I've ever had and it was paid off about 20 years ago. I think at it's highest it was about £55k, which seemed a huge amount to us at the time.

boredandgrand · 24/06/2026 15:18

No debt other than monthly use of credit card which I then pay off in full. Mortgage paid off and cars owned outright.

Barney16 · 24/06/2026 15:15

Loads of debt but my partner died last week and strangely what I owe on my car finance or credit card seems completely inconsequential now. I'm glad we spent all the money we did on living a beautiful life. ( To us it was beautiful).

MrsClattenburg · 24/06/2026 15:15

£0

However we have a much smaller house than any of our friends and family!

Feel like most people joining this thread are showing off about how much they’re not in debt….

Me too. I’m in loads of debt.
Car payment x2
20k Loan for home improvements (roof fell in wasn’t being stupid)
2k on a credit card as I can barely afford to live.

Im embarrased now

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/06/2026 03:55

Zero

I don’t consider a mortgage debt as thats “ affordable” and planned i consider bills i am paying off on a debt repayment scheme are debts
Also credit cards and over draft etc

9k

HappilyDivorced89 · 24/06/2026 15:11

Just under £111k - mortgage, car finance and interest free credit card.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 24/06/2026 15:11

None. Mortgage paid off. Refuse to use credit cards. I had massive debt when my business failed, took everything to pay it off. It's an utterly miserable place to be.

macshoto · 24/06/2026 15:10

Zero debt now (early 50’s).
Highest absolute debt was when we bought our main (country) home (though still only about 1.25x highest earner’s annual gross salary). Two (different) city flats, both mortgage free (though first one was mortgaged when first purchased), and that did involve borrowing 2.5x annual gross salary at the time).
Never bought a car on finance (and never new - nearest were two ex demonstrators).

SwatTheTwit · 24/06/2026 15:08

7k in CC accrued over the years as a single parent + it was a really shit CC with insane interest.

Once DD finished education I intend on paying it off aggressively. It’s the only thing keeping me in my current workplace.

Cluckycluck · 24/06/2026 15:06

Zero debt!

House is owned outright, as is my car. I don't have a credit card and never have.

TurboGirl2 · 24/06/2026 15:04

About £600 left on a loan i got to buy car. Then around 3.5k on 0% credit card which has mainly been on paying to get my car fixed and fillings for my teeth.

Greenwriter76 · 24/06/2026 15:04

Mortgage isn’t a debt, it’s a loan on a house.

Mumstheword1983 · 24/06/2026 14:59

This. When you meant debt I thought you said unsecured debt. If including mortgage then this might be normal for many. Especially in expensive to buy areas.

Edited

Yeah, when someone says to me "I've got £20k of debt" I think credit cards, loans and overdrafts. Not a mortgage!

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2026 04:31

Having a £500k mortgage is rather different to having £500k (or even £50k) across credit cards, car loans etc

MatronPomfrey · 24/06/2026 14:58

About £40,000 left on the mortgage and £3,000 left on a bank loan for a car. I only use my credit card for small payments to keep it active so I can use it on holidays. Try and save up for what we need. We’re not extravagant, our TV is 18 years old.

Good luck Thisthread, hope things go well for you!

Ah, thank you! 😊

Yellowchair1 · 24/06/2026 14:58

As a mortgage between 2 people that's fine I would say! I assume you don't live in the SE or London

I have no debt at all, apart from a credit card with a limit of a few hundred that I've used to build credit history and to accrue points, I use for daily spending & clear the balance very frequently.
However, I want debt! (I really want to buy my own house).

ETA I used to have more debt in the form of credit cards, loans and store cards (remember those with their extortionate interest? Looking at you, Oasis) but I hated paying interest so I worked to clear them all.

hueylouieanddewey · 24/06/2026 14:57

Other than mortgage, about £1500 left on a personal loan which I could pay off with savings if I chose to. And about £500 on Klarna pay in 3 which again I could clear if I wanted to. No idea about DH I know he has car finance and I think he has a personal loan and some cc debt, he's not as bothered as I am about saving / not having debt.

This makes me feel better about my £6k credit card debt & 100k mortgage even if my salary is probably significantly smaller than your friend's so thank you OP!

I’m not shaming anyone! I literally just was still thinking about a conversation had at the pub. Why be so touchy?

I actually (if you read my comments before) am wondering if it’s the way to actually get ahead in things and I’ve missed a trick. It’s interesting to hear about the big mortgages and now people have nice properties (I’m a renter).

Edited

I live in an area where a 3bed semi is 6-800k and they're not fancy. Try avoiding a big behave here. I moved out of London because it was even more unaffordable

Multiuniverse · 24/06/2026 14:53

Mortgage by choice as the interest is lower than investments, it doesn’t make financial sense to pay it off yet.
