Was chatting to a friend earlier who is in over 500k of debt, which she thought was ok but I think is astronomical.

I don’t class my mortgage as “debt” it’s more of an investment.

In terms of debt, none, we spend what we can afford.

Have you always been debt free?

Mortgage but no debt

Swiss177 · 24/06/2026 03:43

Paid off all debt including mortgage before having DS.

Had good job and hadn’t over stretched with property so wasn’t too hard to achieve.

I don’t count a mortgage as proper “debt”, yes technically it is but you need a home to live in and would have to rent otherwise so… I think that’s normal for many around London etc including mortgage debt as property is just so pricey.

Close to 400k including mortgage

eyelinerpencil · 24/06/2026 03:34

Anyway, I’m in much less debt but also don’t own as many things.

It included her mortgage yes. Sorry, I can’t edit my OP to say so.

Bigger than that? Wow. And you’ve managed to pay it off so young you must have been earning super well.

If that includes a mortgage, that presumably a bank have judged she is able to pay, then it’s not an issue.

We had a lot of mortgage debt at one point, far bigger than that, but it’s now all paid off in our 40s so it’s been worth it.

Is that a mortgage though?
