To think the daily routine is impossible. Disgusting house

I want help! People's tips. I don't understand how people manage. I live in a fairly large old house.

This is my weekday routine

7am wake
7.30 - 8.30 getting kids ready for school (primary)
8.30 - 9.30 rush to office or back home to wfh.
9.30 - 5 work my arse off. Back to back meetings
5.30 pick up kids from after school
6 - 7 dinner
7 - 8 bath, bed
8 - 9 constantly put kids back to bed. Feel like tearing my hair out
9 - 9.30 basic tidy, dishwasher, check uniforms
9.30 - 10.30 try to do bits but in all honesty drink a wine and watch telly

My house is disgusting. I mean real mess. - my bathrooms are gross, dust everywhere. Im sprinting to stay still. Just about keep the show on the road but dusting, hoovering, proper cleans so hard to do

At the weekend, i do what i can. But all boys - primary school - and theyre so hyper. If I dont take them out they're out of control

What are other women doing? I dont know how womens homes look normal when they have young kids and work FT. My house is bad enough so id be embarrassed to let somone pop round. No parents. Husband MIA.

Practical tips? I feel like im missing something.

Most primary age children don't need a bath daily. Can you reduce that to speed up the bedtime routine a bit?

Never bathed my kids dsily shower twice a week and while they sre in shower or not use that time ?

i csn see why you want rid if husband

can you pull s sickie and hsve. Big clesn / clearout - including husband and then get cleaner one a month ?

Itwillbefinehonestly · 28/06/2026 23:17

Get a cleaner because you are working full time.

Spray some air freshener through the door ...

And open the door 2 inches and throw in one of those gel air freshener thingies…

Do you need to though?
If only he is using it, then personally I'd just pretend it's doesn't exist. I'd rather have to spend hours cleaning it when he moves out than constantly spending time cleaning up after him.

If you work full time and have young kids you need a cleaner 🤷‍♀️ there isn’t enough hours in the day otherwise.

I always worked 30 hours when dd was younger so I had a day in the week to try and catch up when dd was at school.

Thatsalineallright · 28/06/2026 21:23

You really don't need to clean his toilet. Leave him to his filth and focus on yourself and the kids.

TheGreatDownandOut · 28/06/2026 20:06

Oh OP. You’re trying to fix too much stuff, too quickly and against the backdrop of trying to get divorced.

Kindly, you need to be much easier on yourself. You’re burning through too much energy- physical, mental and emotional.

All you need to focus on right now is divorcing your prick of a husband. Everything else can come later. Have you any idea what custody arrangements may look like post separation? Any chance of your exDH splitting custody in any meaningful way (and would you be comfortable with that?)

A dirty house while you try and navigate your way through a difficult period of you life is totally acceptable. You can think about losing weight in the future when you’re in a better position. You’re looking all around you and seeing failures everywhere and piling pressure on yourself to fix it all now. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Pansykavalier · 28/06/2026 19:56

You absolutely, definitely do NOT need to clean his filthy toilet!!!!!!!

If it bothered him, he WOULD do it. It doesn’t matter that he hasn’t cleaned a toilet in his life. It isn’t rocket science. And presumably he knows how to google or watch YouTube…

H and I sleep separately. Last few months I just cannot fall asleep next to him. If a toe touches me I feel uncomfortable. That sounds dramatic but my body is having such a strong reaction to him!

He's in the main/our bedroom with the ensuite. Im in the box room and use family bathroom. His ensuite is disgusting. He hasnt cleaned a bathroom in his life and he isnt starting now. I always used to clean it but havent for weeks. But i have to right? I just hate cleaning his shitty toilet. It makes me heave and even more resentful. But he will not clean it. Hell would freeze over. So i gotta do it. I never use it so feels unfair but no option i guess.

Thanks for all the advice. Ill get some citric acid. And im goung to call GP about HRT.

Not great. Ive got so much weight round my middle. Recent weight gain. Feel hot and bothered. And been doing house stuff all weekend but it just looks same. There is grime but there are also lots of broken things. I cant seem to get the loo and sinks properly clean. Scaly. We have hard water and just build up. And also have the Sunday anxiety about a bunch of work stuff. I realise none of these things are awful but just got that horrible anxious feeling. Also my pelvic floor is horrendous at the mo. When everything feels messy life feels so messy. Im so fed up of looking for things and never finding what I want.

Wrap kitchen roll around taps etc and soak with white vinegar. Leave for a few hours. It'll dissolve the limescale.

It’s not surprising you’re hot and bothered in the current weather!

Give yourself a break and focus on decluttering rather than cleaning. Everything looks cleaner if the place is tidy, and you stand a better chance of finding things.

I know it’s easy for me to say, but work stuff is just work stuff. Do enough to meet your job description and let the rest go.

Are there any steps you could take re. your pelvic pain? Can you maybe see a physiotherapist who specialises in these kinds of issues?

NChangeorama · 28/06/2026 16:27

Buy some citric acid off Amazon. You will never look back. Leave in loo / on scale overnight if needed and it just dissolves away. Life changing if you live in a hard water area. I also use it to clean my washing machine and put down drains. Doesn’t help with all the other stuff. Hugs.

How old are you? I’ve just found HRT life changing (helps with anxiety) and use the Squeezy app for pelvic floor stuff.

You don't need things to sparkle, just do what you can. Broken things aren't a cleaning issue.

2 boys 4 &2, I work 3 days a week but I don’t do any house work on those days beyond breakfast/lunch/dinner tidy up. I hate constantly feeling like I was living in a mess/unorganised and DH always sat down before me and said he “didn’t know what needed done or thought it was tidy”.

so now I have a cleaner once every 2nd week who does 2hrs (well she now only stays 1.5h but that’s another story) just to do my upstairs. Can’t hoover/dust upstairs when kids are in bed so that’s taken care of. She does a rubbish job of the shower so I still end up doing that.

shower - keep a dishmatic with fairy liquid and vinegar in it in the shower and go round the shower when you’re doing a hair wash. My toddlers also enjoy doing this so I often let them as it’s not harsh chemicals.

one load of washing in the machine every single night. Wash overnight, hang it up next morning. Hopefully dry by night then fold it when you’re watching tv (often my folding piles up I hate this bit).

beds made every morning. Blinds/curtains open and windows if nice day to air bedrooms. This takes 2 mins and at 5 and 6 you could show kids to do their own (nothing perfect just duvet flapped out, pillow on).

then I have a nightly jobs list:-

  • dishwasher loaded and put on if half or more full
  • all bags etc out the car
  • all bags etc packed for next day. Kids clothes looked out if work/nursery day.
  • any lunches/snacks prepped
  • kitchen surface wipe down + table
  • kitchen floor
  • tidy away all toys
  • washing downstairs and in basket
  • load of washing on

up at 5-5.30 with my youngest. We take turns (but it’s mainly me, husband works away a lot too). whoever gets up with him unloads dishwasher. I do this while my milk for my coffee is microwaving.
whoever is getting the lie in and last out of bed makes the bed.

downstairs toilet and living room are ad hoc (I.e. hardly ever done).

it’s not perfect but it’s better and I feel better!

I haven't read the whole thread, sorry for any repetition

A clear start is what's needed. If this were me, I would set aside a whole weekend (rope in grandparents or friends to have the children) and if necessary pay for a cleaner to work alongside you.

Deep clean the whole house. True proper clean, declutter, get the carpets cleaned and oven professionally cleaned too.

Once you have a baseline. Go from there. I would get up 30 minutes earlier and take one job a day. Hoover high traffic areas one day, bathroom another day, dusting another etc. Load of washing on when you get up and hang it out before you leave. Beds made by kids and laundry into basket each day.

In the evening - clean as you go cooking or batch cook once a month so two nights a week you have quick go to meals. For me, a clean kitchen before bed and a quick whip round to pack away clutter is the key. Wipe sinks after use and wipe bath etc after use.

My house is always neat and tidy with this method and I dont feel overwhelmed.

I've just spent a week deep cleaning my house. It was exhausting and wreaked my nails. 🤣 It was embarrassing eg I didn't even realise how filthy our doors were. If I'm honest I'm also a bit pissed off that I had to use my annual leave to do it.

But it is lovely now. My kitchen echoes! (It's tiny, it's just that there is nothing on the counters to absorb noise now.) It is much easier to see when something needs addressing eg I can see that I need to wipe the floor right now whereas before it would have just been lost amongst everything else.

I have given myself permission to use whatever needs to be used. For instance floor wipes are dreadful for the environment and finances but they work and I am more likely to get a couple of those out than clothes and bowls and cleaning fluid.

Now I'm going to try to use TOMM to keep on top of it.

Ooh also a shower spray. Spray it on after your shower. Dry your self. Then rinse the spray off. I don’t have to clean my shower anymore as a separate job.
A trap for hair in shower - buy
them from Amazon. No more blocked plugholes.

Even better buy a spray that doesn’t need rinsing off

ThisSillyPoet · 27/06/2026 10:04

Agree with previous posters, robovac has been a game changer.
I do stuff like cleaning the bathroom whilst I’m in it giving everything a quick wipe when I’m just out of the shower before bed.
When my 3 dcs were younger I once caught myself wondering if I should eat my breakfast before I went to bed to save time in the morning 🤣
